Tagg Lane Caravan Site: Hardstandings

General

  • Touring caravan park near Monyash in the Peak District National Park
  • A 10-minute drive to Bakewell and 15 minutes to Buxton
  • Ice cream café and farm shop next door: easy access to High Peak Trail

Fond of an ice cream or few on your holidays? It’s fair to say you’ll settle in well at Tagg Lane Caravan Site, in the Derbyshire countryside just outside the village of Monyash. This is a sister business to the excellent Tagg Lane Dairy, which produces artisan gelato from its own organic Jersey milk… and just happens to be next door to the caravan park.

It’s not just ice cream that awaits next door: the café also turns that milk into gorgeous milkshakes and creamy coffees, and serves up Belgian waffles and cakes. Meanwhile, the farm shop has free-range eggs and grass-fed beef products to take away – so that’s your evening meal and a good breakfast sorted too.

Clearly with all this tasty food around to consume, you’re going to need to work up an appetite (or work off a few calories…) So it’s handy that the site is surrounded by the splendid scenery of the Peak District National Park, where there are many miles of trail to walk or cycle along. The High Peak Trail, linking Ashbourne and Buxton along an old railway line, is a short walk from the caravan park (and bikes can be hired nearby too), and Lathkill Dale is around three miles away. Dogs are welcome at the park so feel free to bring them along for the outings too.

Not eaten enough yet? It’s a 10-minute drive to Derbyshire’s famed pudding hub, Bakewell. It’s a 15-minute drive to lovely Buxton too, and 20 minutes to Chatsworth – all are good places to pick up a bit more local produce.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

This park has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Clean and tidy site with electric hook up and beautiful views across Derbyshire countryside. Grass well maintained and site secure for dogs. Location next to Tagg Diary Ice cream parlour ideal and a one mile walk to Monyash and The Bulls Head Pub.

    Disliked:

We thought this site was pricey for what it offered and probably would expect full service pitch for that price. Very exposed and at times obviously windy.

Lovely wee campsite, water and chemical waste facilities. Stayed on the hard standing pitch plot 1. No fuss site plenty of space for caravan and car. Bonus having fresh produce on the doorstep especially the ice creams, definitely worth a visit or two.

Fabulous site - super quiet with only another 3 vans for company. Wonderful views and delicious ice cream shop at the farm next door. No facilities but that was its appeal for us. Note that the hook up and the pitch numbers aren't quite lining up but its wasn't a problem ... just a little confusing :)

    Disliked:

Its all booked online so you cant call anybody at the site for help with anything. Not a big issue just worth noting.

We were only there briefly for 1 night on our first ever motorhome holiday. The views are fantastic and the ice cream is phenomenal!!!
We weren’t able to do too much due to time restraints and other stuff such as the weather!! It was sooooo windy and rainy but we were lucky enough to have some dry weather for the kiddos and dogs to have a few hours outside before food and bed. After that, the rain came down in a biblical style the motorhome rocked like the carriage scene in titanic and when it came to leaving we discovered that we were completely stuck in the mud and unable to leave! How embarrassing!! Never to fear though, after a red faced apology in the dairy, Les stopped working, drove the tractor around and pulled us free!! Yay!! Trying to pull out of the site I managed to repeat and get myself stuck again!!! After leaping a fence and chasing the tractor before Les hooked up his trailer to the tractor again, it was no problem for him and he drove straight back to the rescue again!!!
    Our hero!!

    None of it.

    Disliked:

No toilets or showers. To get checked in you had a mile line to join as the dairy farm was selling ice creams one in and one out. Wasn’t made aware no showers so we drove in and back out again. Very disappointed total waste of money

From the manager...

It clearly states that we don’t have toilets and showers, so I’m unsure why you assume we have them?

Regarding check in, ideally checking in before 11:00am is best due to the fact we have a gelateria.

If you find there’s a que, you should have contacted us by phone to check in as this is essential!

    Very close to road

From the manager...

How can the the location be the worst part when you said you liked the view??

We can’t determine the bikers on the roads as the weather was very good.

Also, customer service you said was 2 out of ten, did you check in? We always there on the phone for any issues you may have.

I feel like your whole review is unjustified and quite laughable really.

Kind regards,
Jack

Local attractions

Take the 10-minute drive to Bakewell to sample the famed pudding that takes its name, then head out on the Monsal Trail, a great 8.5-mile trail that runs through some spectacular scenery and takes in old railway tunnels along the way too.

The Tissington Trail is a couple of miles away for more walking, while Miller’s Dale (15 minutes’ drive) and Dovedale (25 minutes) are also good picks for a hike. Head to Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (five minutes) or Hidden Druids Caves (20 minutes) to mix a hit of history in with your rambles.

A wander around the spa town of Buxton (15 minutes) is a rather more gentle way to spend a day – although it does also have a Go Ape adventure park for any restless types that need more activity. There’s plenty to keep you busy on a day out at the Chatsworth estate: explore the house and gardens, meet the animals at the farmyard or let the kids go wild on the playground’s rope park, water play area and trampoline.

Must see

  • Haddon Hall (8.8 kilometres)
  • Chatsworth (12.0 kilometres)
