  • Touring caravan park near Monyash in the Peak District National Park
  • A 10-minute drive to Bakewell and 15 minutes to Buxton
  • Ice cream café and farm shop next door: easy access to High Peak Trail
Fond of an ice cream or few on your holidays? It’s fair to say you’ll settle in well at Tagg Lane Caravan Site, in the Derbyshire countryside just outside the village of Monyash. This is a sister business to the excellent Tagg Lane Dairy, which produces artisan gelato from its own organic Jersey milk… and just happens to be next door to the caravan park. It’s not just ice cream that awaits next door: the café also turns that milk into gorgeous milkshakes and creamy coffees, and serves up Belgian waffles and cakes. Meanwhile, the farm shop has free-range eggs and grass-fed beef products to take away – so that’s your evening meal and a good breakfast sorted too. Clearly with all this tasty food around to consume, you’re going to need to work up an appetite (or work off a few calories…) So it’s handy that the site is surrounded by the splendid scenery of the Peak District National Park, where there are many miles of trail to walk or cycle along. The High Peak Trail, linking Ashbourne and Buxton along an old railway line, is a short walk from the caravan park (and bikes can be hired nearby too), and Lathkill Dale is around three miles away. Dogs are welcome at the park so feel free to bring them along for the outings too. Not eaten enough yet? It’s a 10-minute drive to Derbyshire’s famed pudding hub, Bakewell. It’s a 15-minute drive to lovely Buxton too, and 20 minutes to Chatsworth – all are good places to pick up a bit more local produce.

What customers say

This basic, well-maintained site offers stunning countryside views and easy access to Bakewell and local attractions. Visitors frequently praise the adjacent dairy's exceptional ice cream. While many appreciate the peace and quiet, especially mid-week, some mention weekend crowds at the ice cream parlour. The site lacks toilets and showers, which is clearly stated. Some guests experienced issues with pitch conditions after rain and reported occasional noise from the road or farm activities. Pitches can be close together, with some guests noting the site is used as overflow parking.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked We loved the simplicity. Yes there is very little phone signal and almost no WiFi. For us, this was a positive. We knew these facts before our arrival as it's clearly stated on the listing, as is the fact there are no toilets and showers. The field was lush and clean with hardstanding areas for all pitches. Fresh water and waste disposal is easily accessible. The Dairy Icecream Parlour next door is to die for. It is so popular, people were flocking to it which made in incredibly busy. There is a queue, so be prepared to wait for your slice of heaven! It is worth it! There were no issues with these customers coming onto our camping field while we were there.
The booking in is a pain, the sign says check you allocated number of your pitch booking which is doesn't do. I nipped to the front of the queue in the Icecream Parlour to let them know we had arrived. As others have said, they didn’t seem overly concerned as the which pitch we had to be honest and there was no other interaction with the owners other than my wife chatting to the lady later in the evening during our walk. They are extremely busy with the farm and dairy, so I guess the camping is another added bonus that they let Pitchup.com deal with. We are really happy with our short stay, we used it as a base as it suited us and the price we thought more than fair. The pitches are generally sloping, but again, not an issue for us. We will definitely return very soon.

Disliked Nothing to dislike unless you haven't read the pitchup.com listing.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Was a lovely quiet camp. Plenty of space between units.

Disliked Pity it didn't have toilets or showers, and no WiFi. We go to a camp that has 2 sheds made into toilet and showers.

Liked Small, clean quiet site. Ice cream farm next door had amazing ice cream!! Water/bins/waste disposal close enough. Cows outside our window - the children loved this!

Disliked Road was a little noisy at night but it was bearable. Grass pitches were quite uneven. No phone signal or WiFi

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The location , just 3miles from Bakewell in beautiful countryside. This a dairy farm that make fantastic ice cream.

Disliked The check-in was poor, you have to pull in then go to the ice cream parlour, the was at least a twenty minute wait , then told to go any pitch 1-5, we weren’t welcomed, no information given , felt a inconvenience. the pitches gravel or hard standing were not even and little effort made with field. When we got on site it was clear people fended for themselves and parked any where. The main problem was it’s next to the car park for the parlour and literally hundred of car were in and out on a dust gravel surface so not peaceful or quiet until 5.30. Just your normal farm experience. Won’t go back.

Local attractions

Take the 10-minute drive to Bakewell to sample the famed pudding that takes its name, then head out on the Monsal Trail, a great 8.5-mile trail that runs through some spectacular scenery and takes in old railway tunnels along the way too. The Tissington Trail is a couple of miles away for more walking, while Miller’s Dale (15 minutes’ drive) and Dovedale (25 minutes) are also good picks for a hike. Head to Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (five minutes) or Hidden Druids Caves (20 minutes) to mix a hit of history in with your rambles. A wander around the spa town of Buxton (15 minutes) is a rather more gentle way to spend a day – although it does also have a Go Ape adventure park for any restless types that need more activity. There’s plenty to keep you busy on a day out at the Chatsworth estate: explore the house and gardens, meet the animals at the farmyard or let the kids go wild on the playground’s rope park, water play area and trampoline.
