When you’re keen to get out exploring the Derbyshire Dales, you can’t get much closer to them than Haddon Grove Farm Campsite. This welcoming, family-run caravan and camping site has direct access to spectacular Lathkill Dale from the pitches. Located on a dog-friendly working dairy farm – you are welcome to meet the cows, horses and chickens – with views to the hills and dales of the Peak District National Park, the site was established in the early 1950s and has gone from strength to strength ever since. There are separate fields for family use – with play areas and rope swings – and others for group bookings, ensuring nobody gets disturbed on site. Facilities run to a shower block and wash room, and as barbecues are allowed by the pitches in the camping fields (source any foodie bits in the pretty town of Bakewell, 10 minutes’ drive), firepits can be hired on site. Logs are sold from the small on-site shop, which – more importantly for the kids – also stocks tasty ice cream from a local farm. The site also sells woodfired pizzas, which should be handy if you fancy eating something more substantial.

Liked Stunning views from well spaced out grass fields. It never felt crowded or busy. The new toilet blocks are great - clean and work enough facilities even in a heatwave in August. Walking straight from the site into Lathkill Dale and really close to Eyam, the Monsal trail and other highlights of the Peak District

Liked This was a beautiful campsite. The owners was really lovely, my toddler loved the tyre swing, looking around the farm and the open space below the camping fields.

The food trucks on a weekend (evening and morning) are brilliant for campers like us that don't bring a lot of equipment.

It was busy with a real mix of people. I initially worried it would be noisy in the evening but through the night it was actually the quietest campsite we've slept in this summer! Not a single sound. We all slept right through.

There's also a lot to do in the area for a family.

Disliked Nothing.

The place is super clean and tidy. The people who stay have a lot of respect. Dog friendly. Amy, Ed and Charlie are so hard working and kind and caring. I feel so safe staying on site. The showers and toilets are excellent.

Liked lovely big open site with stunning views. 10 Min drive from Bakewell. Friendly Owners. Nice new toilet and shower block. Nice having the vans on site for food or just to sit and have a beer on the benches.

Disliked Could do with another toilet block in the future, also towards the end of the day and in the morning after a busy weekend toilet and sink water pressure drops. So not a lot gets flushed away.

Scenic walks are to be had along the namesake river in Lathkill Dale, where you can stride out towards Lathkill Head Cave (an hour and 20 minutes’ walk) or marvel at the clear springs at The Blue Waters near the peaceful village of Over Haddon (35 minutes). For a slightly longer ramble, Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (90 minutes) reward with prehistoric monuments and ancient burial mounds. Combine your stroll around the verdant grounds at Chatsworth House with a guided tour of the mansion’s ornate rooms packed with priceless antiques, or take in the Elizabethan Walled Gardens at Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes’ drive) after you’ve admired the tapestry collection and medieval chapel. For an insight into Peak District heritage, visit the bijou Eyam Museum (also 20 minutes) in the famed ‘plague village’ to learn the story of the Bubonic Plague of 1346–52, or have a wander around the deserted remains of Magpie Mine (five minutes’ drive), which was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire and closed in 1958.
