General

  • A small rural campsite and working farm
  • In the heart of the Peak District
  • A short walk from the Monsal Trail and various local pubs

Right in the heart of the Peak District National Park, Dale Farm Rural Campsite near Bakewell is a quiet countryside place for those who like quiet countryside camping.

And for those who like cycling too, as you'll find the Monsal Trail a short pedal away from your peaceful pitch, eight and a half miles of traffic-free trail passing Bakewell on its route from Topley Pike to Darley Dale. And hiking: the Monsal Trail is a hoot on foot too and as it's the Peak District, many more miles can be found to pound nearby. (And for those who like trad country pubs: three are within a mile of the farm.)

Dale Farm Rural Campsite is on a working farm and has a loo block with washing-up area, and a small shop selling produce and award-winning baking from the farm.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

beautiful location, quiet site, near lovely pub ( Little Longstone), great location for walking, dog friendly, clean. My dislikes below are personal ones so don't be put off as I am sure much better when the owners are around for some part of the day.

    Disliked:

poor way of communicating as we arrived without booking on line and only a mobile to 'text'! Tried telephoning twice but only ansa phone and then we had a return call from abroad by the 'owner' (we assume). No idea of wifi code? no info on site. No shop open on site as indicated on the web site but when open on our last day we saw it looked very nice. (Local people told us it was open but the owners were away - would be good to have info on the site somewhere to say this for arrivals or better on website so that people knew before arriving). Shower is £1 for 5 minutes and no idea when it is going to run out (we thought this was costly extra but perhaps I did not read the website properly!) It was a struggle to get the coin in and get changed in the 1min allowed unless fully able and flexible. Cant wash your face in the sink as soap dispenser in the way - a minor irritant.

From the manager...

Hi Ruth

Although you have pointed out some of the great features about our site it really is a bitter pill to swallow when we try our best to help accommodate someone and they show their appreciation with a particularly nitpicking review.

In business no one is perfect but we really do try our best and even so we can't please everyone. Unfortunately we didn't know you were coming as you hadn't booked, so we were unable to make provision for your unexpected arrival. Yes Joanna and Nick were taking a well earned holiday, John was at the farm to cover this but was at Bakewell Farmers market at the time you arrived.

We are a rural camp site on a working farm which we advertise. If you had booked before you arrived you would be provided with clear instructions prior to arrival which would have included a handbook with a site map. We also have an arrivals board with instructions which you were able to follow as you reached one of the team this way so why is that poor?

During the summer we were on site 24/7 but now the season has slowed we are allowing ourselves to leave the site unattended for times as it does not require a full time staff member.

We have a small shop on site. It sells frozen meat from the farm, plus eggs, jam and fire supplies. We aren't always able to keep the shop open if we have to go out for any reason and there's no one on site. Generally we aim for the shop to be open 365 days a year from 7am-7pm and sometimes longer hours. Of course there are odd occasions where we can't be open, for example if there is an emergency. The shop was open for a few hours on Monday and Tuesday morning, and then Wednesday as usual 7-7. There is an excellent village shop a five minute stroll down the road which serves the community very well indeed.

We don't have a reception. We make this clear.

The shower has a buzzer which sounds when you have 30 seconds left, it is clearly stated in the instructions above the coin meter.

You are given 1min from the moment you put the coin in the shower meter, if you don't think this is enough you can take a few things off first (shoes, socks, jumpers etc.) there are no rules against this.

We don't have wifi. We don't claim to have wifi, but we have excellent phone and 4g coverage which usually suffices for most people.

The soap dispenser is above the sink to catch any misfires. The sink is in the toilet and therefore meant for hand washing.

We provide clear contact details and our preferred method of contact is email and then text. If you don't like the way we run our business or our methods of communication then I politely ask that you find a place to stay that does meet your needs, rather than pointlessly running us down with how we run our site on the 1 week of the year we are away on holiday.

The flat pitch for tent and very clean toilets and showers and a great little farm shop. Loved the fact there were horses on the farm which my daughter loved

    Disliked:

Wasn't totally clear when we first turned up as to where we pitched.. had to download a handbook online to get instructions.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review Stephen, we are pleased that you liked so many things about our farm and campsite.

Our camping information email and handbook is sent prior to arrival and has clear instructions about which areas to pitch up, we find that not everyone checks their email though so we have to text to say we have emailed this. Maybe we need to look for another method to get in touch, carrier pigeon? ;)

Communication from the site owners in between my booking and arriving was clear and timely. The site was clean and very well maintained. The owner that we met on the day was friendly and able to answer all our questions. There's a farm shop on the site as well so you can buy eggs, meat, preserves and other fancy goods.

The site is half a mile on a black top road from a lovely village that has a shop and two pubs. Another lovely pub is a sort walk across a few fields.

The site is well placed for walking and rambling and for cycling, both on and off road.

    Disliked:

Not so much a dislike as a neutral compared to everything else that was very positive. There seemed to be relatively few toilet and shower facilities for the number of pitches compared to other sites I've been to. At busy times, I can imagine one might have to queue.

The location. Great for exploring the area. Quiet site.

    Disliked:

Insufficient facilities for the number of campers. Only one pay shower and one washing up sink which was outside and three toilets so lots of queuing.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review Celine, we do have a new facilities block planned but as a small site we have to wait until we have raised enough money before we can start building.

I should probably point out that there are 4 toilets in total.

Also you stayed on our busiest weekend (bank holiday) and whilst there was the odd queue, these were mainly at peak times.

Local attractions

Pretty much all whims are whetted in the Peak District, whether you're into outdoor photography, climbing, caving, mountain biking, hiking, rambling, sightseeing or shopping for Peak District produce and souvenirs.

Monsal Head of Monsale Dale is on the Monsale Trail and less than a mile away from Dale Farm Rural Campsite. It's one of the top spots in the region for stopping and taking pics of the River Wye, its dale and the utterly gorge Headstone Viaduct, so prepare to spend some time gazing around.

A few miles from base, the sweet town of Bakewell is another highly popular Peak District stop and is the only market town in the national park.

Also a few miles away, Chatsworth House is yet another much-visited Peak highlight and has been voted several times as Britain's fave country house. Austen fan? This is the house Elizabeth visited in Pride and Prejudice and it was used as Pemberley in the BBC's 2005 adaptation. Yes, that one, with Colin Firth, in the lake…
