Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park

Bala, Gwynedd, Wales

Tent pitch
Electric grass tent pitch (deluxe)

Great camp site, beware of the deluxe pitches, far from attractions.

Liked * Lovely friendly welcome from the camp staff on arrival. Allowed us to check in slightly earlier than our allocated time slot. * Campsite is a small but very well laid out and maintained well, facilities modern and cleaned regularly. * Superb location if your into water sports. * Camp site has a small shop that is reasonable priced. * Small little village shops including a Spar, Coop and bars and restaurants.

Disliked * The Deluxe tent pitch they advertised for a premium price. Ground was water logged making it incredibly difficult to walk on without your feet becoming soaking wet (Avoid if heavy rain has been present). Your tent pegs won't hold in the ground and your tent will become unstable in high winds.. * Camp site is situated on the side of a hill so south western winds come up from the lake and hit the camp hard in high winds. * the Service road at the top of the camp site is very noisy with constant agricultural vehicles, lorries and quad bikes going to and from an industrial estate of some kind. * For those who just want to chill it's a perfect location, however for those that want to travel places it's nearly an hour's drive to attractions around Bala.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're genuinely sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet expectations. We're glad you felt that you received a friendly welcome and made the most of an early check in. We are very proud of the grounds and our facilities so we're also pleased that these made a good impression! Regarding the Deluxe tent pitch, we understand how challenging wet ground conditions can be, especially after periods of heavy rain and we have had an extremely wet Winter since these pitches have been upgraded with very little chance for them to drain and dry out. As a countryside campsite, weather can significantly affect ground conditions, but we are always looking at ways to improve drainage and provide clearer guidance to guests during wetter periods. We have made sure to contact all guests booked onto these pitches to make them aware prior to their arrival that these pitches are wetter than we would like. You’re absolutely right that our location on a hillside can make us more exposed to winds coming off the lake. While many guests enjoy the open views this brings, we appreciate that in stronger weather it can be less comfortable, and maybe we need to include this in our descriptions so guests can plan accordingly. We’re also sorry that noise from the nearby service road impacted your stay. While this is outside of our direct control, we understand how important peace and quiet is for many visitors and will review how we communicate this to ensure expectations are set more clearly. To be clear, the road behind the campsite does not lead to an industrial estate but to a hotel and farm land. Finally, we appreciate your balanced comment about the location. Many guests choose us specifically for a peaceful, away-from-it-all retreat, but we understand it may feel more remote for those wanting to explore the wider area frequently. Your feedback is very valuable to us, and we will use it to make improvements wherever possible. We do hope you might consider visiting us again in the future under more favourable conditions. Quirky site, brilliant for kids, can prove difficult in bad winds.

Liked Pricing for a pitch with electricity was reasonable. With the price of the pitch, you had access to the heated pool (27 degrees constantly between the hours of 10&17:00hrs), a golden beach, onsite football pitches, ping pong tables and a small Arcade. Loads of things to do around the area. Sand dunes, Hayle town for convenience of shops etc and the site itself is located perfectly. Now more than 40 min drive to places such as lands end, Newquay, Mousehole and penzance. Plenty of stuff to do. You would need more than a weeks stay to achieve all the sites around the area.. weather permitting obviously.. which moves me onto the negatives..

Disliked The site itself is situated amongst the sand dunes and close to the sea front. During my stay, 5 out of the 6 days the wind and rain hammered my tent as the wind blissfully blew up the hillside and battered my poor 8 man tend. So much so it broke it causing my tent to leak. I had a medium quality tent I've never had a problem with wind till this holiday. Make sure you have extra pegs and strong ground ropes. Placing your car the side of the wind also helped redirect some of the wind. Another note worth mentioning. There are only one toilet and shower block for the whole camp. Situated at the bottom next to the pool. Nightmare to walk if your located right up the top plots. Uphill walk with no lights can be a struggle for the less fitter camping folk (p.s i was naughty and drove down a few times lol). Pool opening times were short as they needed to have a life guard present to keep it open. So if your out for the day and want to come home for a swim then if its past 17:00hrs it will be closed. Unsure if its open longer during the summer holidays.

Stunning camp site. We'll priced, we will be coming again!

Liked The location is perfect, set back in the Welsh rolling hills. We pitched up next to a calm flowing river which was just perfect to sit and watch on an evening. The ground was flat and spacious. Washing facilities were clean, well serviced and modern.

Disliked No massive problems, just a minor niggle that the showers are weak, the WiFi they provide is slow, the nearest supermarket is 30 min drive (has local shops but with few supplies) and the noise of the traffic along the top of the camp (something that can't be changed)

Great stay, perfect for getting with nature.

Liked • The owner John (very pleasant and helpful) • Received a warm welcome and showed around the camp site. • Spacious site with lots of pitches to choose from. • Toilets and showers were cleaned often to a good standard. • Onsite pool table and electric charge points in washing up room. • Great location. • Lovely big fire pit to relax at bottom of site. • Access to woodside walks next door to site. • Local shop less then 5 min walk away. • Local Bistro and pub in the nearby village.

Disliked • Poor direction to reception as site is opposite where John's house is. Needs a sign post. • The smell off pig urine from the farm. • The very early morning noises from banging and tractor noises from the farm. • The main road that separates the site to the toilet/shower block. • The idiotic local drivers and there loud exhausts racing up and down the road. • How hard the floor is to bang tent pegs in.
