Where you should stay in Devon

Lots of Devon locations are all geared up for family-friendly glamping, and many go beyond that with extra handy features like a play area. Devon’s seaside resorts are popular picks for family holidays: aim for somewhere like Westward Ho! for classic arcade games and crazy golf, or head south to Paignton to mix up your beach days with a zoo trip or a steam railway ride.

Outdoor accommodation is a great choice for those bringing dogs along on a break too – you’ll just need to make sure you choose a dog-friendly glamping site. Devon’s generally pretty welcoming to dogs but it’s still worth picking your location wisely: stay near dog-friendly beaches like those around Teignmouth or Woolacombe, and look out for attractions like Powderham Castle where canines can come too.

Devon is famously the only county in England with two separate stretches of coastline – and both of them have their own individual character. Pitchup lists lots of sites for glamping near the beach, but you’ll need to decide which is best for you: choose a south coast resort like Dawlish for sandy beaches and gentle waves, stay east around Sidmouth for the Jurassic Coast, or head to the wilder north coast for surfing hotspots like Croyde (which has kit hire and lessons if you’re just dipping in for the first time).

Not only does Devon have two coastlines, it also has two national parks – and that means this is splendid territory for walking holidays. Look for somewhere around Lynton for coastal walks and stargazing in Exmoor, or check out Tavistock and Ivybridge for easy access to days out on Dartmoor (in the knowledge that a cosy bed awaits at the end of your hike).

Devon is packed with family-friendly attractions that make for a great day out in between beach trips and rural rambles. From the huge machines of Diggerland to the rides of Crealy Theme Park to the hilarious sheep racing of The BIG Sheep (near Bideford), there’s a wide variety of kid-pleasing places to pick from.

It’s tempting to think that Devon’s all about the coast and rural pursuits – but don’t write off the county’s cities, especially if you’re after something to do when the weather’s not so good. Plymouth is home to the National Marine Aquarium, gin distillery tours and the excellent The Box museum, while Exeter has the cathedral, a cinema museum and spooky tunnel tours to keep you busy.

From the Bronze Age relics on Dartmoor to the gothic design of Knightshayes, there’s an awful lot of history to take in while you’re on a Devon holiday. Saltram House and Arlington Court are other good places to visit, and it’s also worth delving underground at the fascinating Beer Quarry Caves, near Seaton.
