  • Spacious park spread across 500 acres of Kent countryside
  • Five minutes' drive from Paddock Wood station and trains to London
  • Access to the River Medway for canoeing and fishing
Set in 500 acres of open fields and woodland, The Hop Farm is a huge site with plenty for guests to get stuck into. First of all, the river Medway flows through the park – so arrive by canoe if you like, or stick around on site for fishing and kayaking. Second, it has a friendly on-site pub with a nice and familiar menu full of pub classics. What else is there to like? Well, the site has a stunning backdrop of historic oast houses, the largest collection of Victorian-era oast houses in the world. It's easy to get to, being just a five-minute drive from Paddock Wood station and trains to London. Local shops and amenities are five minutes away by car too. Kent (aka The Garden of England) has many beaches, historic towns, forests, castles and stately homes (and gardens). The very scenic town of Royal Tunbridge Wells is 15 minutes' drive away from The Hop Farm. Tonbridge, a market town with a castle, shops and restaurants, is also 15 minutes away. The on-site facilities include a modern shower and toilet block. Dogs are welcome on site for an additional fee. You're welcome to bring your own barbecues and raised firepits to use here, as long as the ground conditions are good. The on-site shop also rents out firepits and stocks firewood (both are limited, so subject to availability).

Spacious fields, great river access for water fun. Facilities clean, staff friendly. Some electric pitches are a bit cosy, and facilities can get busy. Great country walks nearby.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Spacious grass pitches and walk by the river.

Disliked Lack of welcoming smile from the man on reception, codes on doors to washroom. Other campers driving from other fields in their cars to use the wash rooms and to do their dishes. Boy doing wheelies in the field on his mororbike!

From the manager: I am sorry you did not enjoy your 1 night stay.
The codes are to prevent people not staying on site from using them as there are public footpaths from and to the river.
As some of the non-electric fields are more than a 25 minute walk from the washrooms and washing-up sinks many guests do need to drive to use the facilities.
We did address the parents of the youngster riding an electric bike as soon as we were notified, we do after all have a 5 MPH limit on site.
We look forward to welcoming you again, hopefully the man on reception will smile a bit more.

Once we were made aware of the youngsters on the electric bikes we did caution them, had we known earlier it would have been better for everyone.
We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Liked Easy to find. Easy access for large vehicles. Reception staff was excellent.

Disliked Large open field with what appeared to be permanent residents and a lorry park. Felt unsafe and exposed.
The Hop Farm attraction IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED which was the whole reason for choosing to stay here. We left immediately and I did receive a partial refund the following day.

Liked Big open space toilets were clean

Disliked Nothing for children on the actual campsite no play area etc and the toilets were a good 5 minute walk from the pitch we were on not great if you need the loo in the night as there was also no lighting leading to them.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I am sorry you did not enjoy your 1 night stay.
When you book it does state "Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit". On non-electric guests choose where to stay once they have checked in.

The family farm, park, museums and Oast houses were permanently closed in March 2023 as noted on the website.

Perhaps you will visit again to enjoy the country and river walks and bring some indoor and outdoor games for you and the family to enjoy together. If deciding to stay further away from the facilities a toilet tent or even a bucket may come in useful.

Local attractions

Kent has 350 miles of coastline, with watersports and those famous white cliffs at Dover. Whitstable and Herne Bay are popular with oyster eaters, anglers and jetskiers. There are umpteen options for families in the area including play centres, farms, horse riding and days out. Try Howletts Wild Animal Park in Canterbury, home to gorillas and operating experiences for visitors such as junior ranger days. Penshurst Place and Gardens has historical re-enactments, children’s trails, an adventure playground and special events during the school holidays. Both Leeds Castle at Maidstone and Hever Castle near Edenbridge are family-friendly and packed with activities and events. There’s a Go Ape! at Leeds Castle as well as two mazes, boat trips, falconry displays, underground grotto and the Knights' Realm Playground, a scale model of the castle (and a golf course and golf instruction for the grownups). Hever, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, has a yew maze and water maze, award-winning gardens and a topiary. Back with the big folk, the old market towns of Tonbridge, Maidstone, Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Wells are close by for shopping and sightseeing. Bluewater shopping centre is in Greenhithe (rival Lakewater is just over the Essex border at West Thurrock).
