  • Family-run dog-friendly farm site in Cropredy village
  • A 20-minute drive to British Motor Museum; 40 mins to Blenheim Palace
  • Wood-fired pizzas on busy weekends; a short walk to pubs and cafés
Fancy a farm stay, but not so keen on the idea of navigating little country lanes? Set off to Oxfordshire and The Old Dairy Farm Caravan and Camping: getting here involves a mere 10-minute detour from the M40 at Banbury. That location makes this a most handy spot for motorway stopovers, but there’s plenty around to please those who choose to stay longer too. However long you stay at this family-run farm, you’ll not want to miss out on meeting the pygmy goats and free-range chickens and peering into the aviary; once the kids have done that, send them off for a proper run about on the large recreational field to tire them out before bedtime. Handy too are the smart and well-maintained facilities, including a toilet block, showers, a washing-up area, water supply and Elsan point. The wood-fired pizza oven gets going on busy weekends (and it’s also available for private hire if you’re having a gathering). Don’t worry if there’s no pizza action while you’re here: it’ll take just a few minutes to walk to Cropredy’s pubs, cafés and shop (or its play park). It’s also possible to walk to the Oxford Canal and River Cherwell for waterside wanders, and a short drive will get you out into the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for more walks, plus golf courses, fishing lakes and National Trust estates. In the main this is a peaceful site, but it's worth noting that a rail line passes fairly close by so you may hear a bit of noise from the pitches (or even spot trains – much to the delight of young rail enthusiasts).

Liked: Absolute gem of a site this one, stopped over on the way to visit relatives for one night, arrived late but plenty of space. Strolled into the village where there's a great, dog friendly pub. Pitches well maintained, I was the furthest you could get from reception but wifi was still strong. Can't wait to come back for longer.

Liked: Honestly couldn’t fault this site, we absolutely loved all of the animals on site. The goats, the lovely Macaw called Chelsea, as well as all the other gorgeous birds. The site was really clean, had a small baby play area with a baby swing and slide as well as an older child climbing frame and swings and two bouncy castles. Shower and wash facilities were also great, and the hosts were lovely. There’s a little shop on site and if you’re lucky enough to go while it’s busy there is a great choice of food items from the cafe bit including wood fired pizzas (gutted we missed out as it was quiet) we will definitely be returning. Such a shame it’s no longer a fully fledged Falcony as the area where it used to be is just gorgeous, I spoke to the owner who said they were making it into a glamping area to hire out in groups which would be amazing! It’s really easy to reach as a stop off just off the M40 too which is a huge plus when travelling cross county!

Liked: Well kept site, friendly informative staff. Thoughtfully laid out facilities. We don't have children and often chose adult only sites, but the activities for children on site seemed to occupy those that were there well enough for us not to feel too bothered by them. The food options looked really good even though we didn't need them on this occasion.

Disliked: I don't think I would consider going if not on a hook up pitch (which was a lovely size!) because otherwise you have little control over the spacing between you and others. On our visit people generally seemed to be sensible and considerate but not sure I'd chance it.

Liked: Flat land comfortable to sleep in tent. The animals especially goats are so cute and the kids loved the play area. There is a lovely walk on the canal too and we met the friendly narrow boat community.

Liked: The family atmosphere. Welcoming staff and happy children playing with the farm animals and each other. Great shop which was full of supplies that you never thought you needed. There was a cafe on site making yummy pizzas and food. This was a great addition to the stay.

Disliked: Nothing major, just felt the dishwashing facilities needed updating. The trains, quite regular until 10:30 at night, but passed quickly so not really an issue.

Liked: I can thoroughly recommend this campsite. Although this trip was just adults, I will definitely be back with my grandkids. The showers and toilets are excellent, the pitches are flat with plenty of room for the car to be parked next to the tent, and the goats in their pen are just gorgeous. The only thing I would suggest to anyone thinking of staying here is to take some sort of shade. There is none to speak of and we were setting up on the hottest day of the year so far .

Local attractions

Coming to the Cotswolds for a bit of fresh air and gentle activity? Set forth for fishing at Clattercote Reservoir, or tee off at Cherwell Edge Golf Course; both are about 10 minutes away by car. Country walking routes are plentiful too, of course, as are fine buildings to mooch around. Blenheim Palace (40 minutes’ drive) is perhaps the best known of all the Oxfordshire stately homes (and with good reason, for ’tis fab) but it’s worth taking a look at some others too, including Farnborough Hall (10 minutes), Sulgrave Manor (20 minutes) and Upton House and Gardens (20 minutes). For a break from the classic Cotswolds activities, head out to meet the big birds of Fir Tree Falconry (15 minutes) or sigh over all the shiny machines at the British Motor Museum (20 minutes). And if you’re in need of a tipple or two to accompany your barbecue back at base, there are some excellent local ones to be acquired at Hook Norton Brewery (25 minutes) and the Cotswolds Distillery (half an hour).
