General

  • Alpine setting site in a walkers' paradise
  • Spectacular mountain views among the Mont Blanc massif
  • Several walks and hikes starting straight from the site

'Spectacular' barely even covers the jaw-dropping vistas at this splendid Swiss site. Set a few minutes' walk from the swish resort of La Fouly in the Mont Blanc massif, Camping des Glaciers is surrounded by stunning mountain peaks, under deep blue skies and among blazes of colourful flowers: it's not a massif stretch to see why it's been described as 'one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed' by a highly impressed former guest.

This beaut place is 1,600 metres above sea level, in a peaceful and quiet wildlife haven bordering Italy and France. You absolutely have to hike while you're here, as the surroundings are first-rate and the paths aplenty; several walks and hikes start directly from the site. Or there's rock climbing, mountain biking, treetop adventuring, and – an absolute must – taking a guided walk with a handsome St Bernard dog: this part of Switzerland is the Pays du St-Bernard, after all...

Camping des Glaciers pitches are set between hedgerows along the river or on terraces in a meadow; large caravans are welcome. Guests all have access to smart, modern and spotless amenities including hot water, free showers and a baby changing room, along with a covered washing-up area and a launderette. As befits such a beaut setting, barbecues are allowed so you can eat alfresco – pretty much mandatory among views such as these.

Other facilities include a free wifi, a small kiosk at reception and bread for sale, and a living area with TV and internet corner to retreat back to after a long day's hiking or a serious cuddling session with one of the local St Bernards. There's also a big and well-equipped playground: if you're staying on site for the day, take the kids along to swing about here while you lie back and soak up more of those fine mountain views.

What a fantastic place, we were slightly apprehensive about this hoilday as it was our first time. We were at first annoyed that we had to book a minuim 3 night stay, but infact we stayed an extra night, and would have quite happily stayed a lot longer. what a stunning place, and so easy going and helpful people here too. We were just invited to choose our pitch and let the host know. To hear the cow bells in the valley, to see the meadow flowers this time of year, and lovely warm sunshine, all whilst looking at a stunning view of a glacier. The photos won't ever do this quite but stunning location justice. Truly magical, as for the campsite, it's very central to a the location, for walking and exploring. The facilities are very good and clean. The walk directly above the campsite to Neve Hut is a must. What a cracking place to celabrate my 50th birthday.

    Thankyou NIk and Chris

    Great place to stay.
I would highly recommend it to everyone.
Pack a warm set of clothes because even in Summer the mountains get fresh over night.

Local attractions

Camping des Glaciers is less than a kilometre from the Swiss Val Ferret resort of La Fouly: start off at the tourist office to see what's on offer in and around the town from the heady local mixture of sports, strolls, nature spotting and birdwatching. There's also the option of joining one of the many local events such as venison hikes through the valley or daily brunch at the Ars pasture – and speaking of local gastronomy, check out the regional AOC raclette cheese while you're here.

A stay in these parts will have you in Tour du Mont-Blanc territory too if you're up for tackling part of one of the nest-known long-distance walks in Europe, covering around 170 kilometres around the Mont Blanc massif and passing through Switzerland, Italy and France. Taking the TMB in a clockwise direction from La Fouly will lead to over the Grand Col Ferret into Italy, climbing up almost 1,000 metres on a trek of three or four hours.

For a gentler time, make your way to the three valley lakes of the Lacs de Fenêtre for waterside strolls and yet more spectacular views; for an even more adrenalised time, book a solo or tandem paragliding session 20 minutes' drive away in Orsières.
