Tent pitches with a view

General

  • Peaceful rural site in a quiet part of the Costa Brava
  • On a shaded hill a 100-metre stroll from a sandy beach
  • Bar-restaurant, playground, TV room and shop

What a whale of a time will be had at Camping Moby Dick in Catalonia's Girona. For it's in lovely locale across from a Spanish seafront, and only 100 metres or so from a scenic and sandy Spanish beach in the quiet coastal town of Calella de Palafrugell: if you yearn for the Costa Brava without heaving crowds, this should be a serene spot for you.

Camping Moby Dick is small, rural and family run, welcoming families, solo wanderers and groups of friends, and with a peaceful vibe for chilled Costa Brava days. Pitches are on terraces on a small hill shaded by mature oak and pine trees, and some have sea views.

The site is all set up to have most of what you'll need to stay put for quiet days, with a bar-restaurant, a TV room, a playground, a ping pong table, and a grocery shop selling fresh bread and fruit. The modern amenities include toilet blocks, showers and a laundry room.

Please note

The use of breathable ground sheets is compulsory on all pitches.

Nice site for a stay in this lovely town 30/09/2018

Nice laid back site, friendly greeting and being close to the end of their season, plenty of space. Lots of trees and good views from some pitches at the back. Excellent position for walking into Calella which is a lovely town with some good restaurants (try Caume for tapas) and for nice coastal walk into Llafranc. Showers a bit old fashioned and hot water a bit temperamental but all spotless as were the toilets which have seats and paper.

    Disliked:

A bit tight for manoeuvring especially for larger Motorhomes and caravans. Motorhome service point not easy to get into albeit it just needs a bit of thought. Not really the site's fault but there are ants - just don't let any part of a tree touch your vehicle otherwise the ants will stroll in!! The Spar supermarket just down the road did sell a very effective bio deterrent.

Not busy when we visited at the end of September and we found a reasonable sized pitch for our 6 metre motorhome. Easy walk toPalafrugal beaches and restaurants so no need for another form of transport. Showers were basic but clean and no disturbances at night. Lovely walks in either direction along the cliff top paths.

    Disliked:

Very little. This is the second time we have stayed here but would avoid the busier Summer months.

From the manager...

Thank you for your kind review! Yes, September is a great time to visit our campground. The weather is lovely at that time of year. We are glad you discovered the beautiful walks on the cliff paths. There is a lot to see and do in the area and we hope you come visit us again in the future to discover more. You are absolutely correct...the walk into town and to the beaches is so easy you don't need motorised transport. Thank you again for taking the time to review your experience with us.

We were greeted upon arrival by a nice man, he offered us 'complete tranquility' at the top of the campsite, so we drove up to the top to find a nice secluded pitch with shade on top of the hill. Our neighbours were friendly, the toilets very very clean and the beach 3 mins walk!! We loved it.

Location was excellent for the town, beaches and walks along the coast.
    The swimming pool
Facilities were basic but clean and well maintained

    Disliked:

The reception is not open very often and only from 10 - 3pm
The owner demands your passport or driving licence to keep for your whole stay - the only place we have encountered this in Spain. This could perhaps be avoided if you are able to pay up front

I loved the camp site, it was very quiet and peaceful. The staff was more than very helpful. I felt very safe being a woman with a young child. The bathrooms were immaculate and had plenty of toilet paper. The showers were clean as well. We had a 5 night stay and really enjoyed ourselves. The walkways to the restroom were very well lit up but not too obtrusive. The onsite restaurant was very good and we ate there several times. Good choice at good prices. The convenience of this beautiful camp site was that it had a supermarket accessible within short walking distance. The pool was a plus and we swam a several times in the clean blue water. The nearby beach was very lovely where we enjoyed clear water and nice cool evenings. I look forward to returning again to this camp site next summer 2019! It is a must of you are visiting the Baix Emporda. Don't miss this fabulous camp site Moby Dick!

The town where the site is located

    Disliked:

Where do I begin......the site is not as described.
Quiet and peaceful - no, pitches are so small, you can shake hands with the neighbours without leaving the caravan! We got back one day to find new neighbours setting up their tent from inside our awning!!
100 metres from the beach - no, you need to re-measure, it is at least double that.
Showers were awful, cold and not particularly clean.
Couldn’t park by the pitch, despite information on the website saying it was OK.
Place was overrun with ants, which perhaps wouldn’t have been such a big issue if it wasn’t for the other issues mentioned.
We left after 2 nights having booked for a week.

Local area and proximity to the beach and local spar shop. Showers, and toilets were clean, regularly saw them being cleaned.

    Disliked:

We booked a tent pitch with a car, but on arrival found we could not have our car with us as the pitch was up on a ledge so we had to carry all our equipment from the car. Be prepared to get up close to the campers next door as the pitches are very small.
No hot water for washing up or washing clothes.
Although close to the beach, we could not launch our kayaks from there. We had to walk a good twenty minutes and carry them down a flight of steps to get them into the water. You cannot take dogs onto any of the beaches either.
Beware, make sure you tell them when you pay that a deposit was made to pitch-up as they tried to charge us and my parents booking the full amount on departure from the site.

Local attractions

The eight (!) award-winning beaches of Calella de Palafrugell around Camping Moby Dick should keep sand and serenity seekers content for some time, but if you want to up the watery ante at any point, you can join the diving school at Port Pelegri beach, hire kayaks at Canadell beach, or take a sailing excursion from the beach of Port Bo – or do the whole heap in between sandy days on beach towels (recommended).

Two walking trails to take you round the area are within easy reach of the site, one from Sant Roc to Golfet beach, and another from the centre of Calella de Palafrugell to the village of Llafranc. For cycling, access the local Via Verde, connecting Saita Margarita to the village of Palamós, a tiptop stop in itself for its swimming, sailing and windsurfing bay.

Garden fans will go gaga at the nearby and famed botanical gardens of Cap Roig, spreading down terraces from the castle of the Cap Roig estate to the sea and lauded as one of the very best gardens on the whole of the Med. Spanish and international artists exhibit their works at the gardens during the summer months.
