  • Peaceful site on a family-run farm 10 minutes from Venturina Terme
  • 10 minutes' drive from the beaches of the Gulf of Baratti
  • Outdoor kitchen with barbecues, and farm shop selling fresh produce

Fancy a slice of rural Italian life, spending your days pottering around little medieval villages, soaking in thermal waters, touring wineries or relaxing on the beaches? How about following that up with evenings feasting on delish local produce as the sun goes down over your gorgeously green surrounds?

If the answer is a resounding si, say ciao bella as you meet Agricampeggio Tognoni, part of a family-run fruit and veg farm in the Maremma region. Life is peachy indeed in this spot, surrounded by peach trees and open fields between the spa town of Venturina Terme and the sandy beach at the little resort of Baratti (and only about a 10-minute drive from both).

The vibe here is decidedly chilled, with a focus on just being out and about in natural surroundings. Those seeking lots of leisure facilities and entertainment will need to search elsewhere; this is one for the folks who thrive on simple pleasures. There’s a volleyball pitch if you fancy gathering folks for a game, and space for the bambini to run about and let off steam. Other mod cons include wifi access, toilets (one accessible for less mobile guests), indoor hot showers and an outdoor shower with cold water for hot days or hardy types.

You’ll have to do your own catering here, but that’s more of a bonus than a hardship when you’ve got access to a fab outdoor (covered) kitchen area with barbecues and tables, and can create your meals with fruit and veg fresh from the farm’s very own fields. Subsidise your farm shop haul with extras from the farmers’ co-op or supermarket in Venturina Terme and all that remains is to pick up a bottle or two of the local vino (direct from the producers perhaps) and raise a glass to the good life as dusk falls over your little rural retreat.

Local attractions

The Maremma region’s a fab place for those who like to go a-wandering – get your walking shoes on and off you go to trot through woods and marshes, up and down the hills and past the striking black rocky cliffs. And of course there are coastal trails to follow too, with the promise of a cooling dip in the sea at the end.

An equally excellent way to pass a day is to skip the walk and head straight to the beach – it’ll only take you 10 minutes or so of driving to reach the nearest, on the Gulf of Baratti. Down here is a splendid swathe of sand that’s also home to a sailing centre and windsurf rental shops. Venture a little further along the coast and you can pick from several more beaches; make it as far as Piombino (20 minutes in the car) and you can join a scuba diving trip or hop on a boat to the island of Elba.

Further relaxing times can be had in the thermal waters of Venturina Terme, 10 minutes’ drive from the site. Or you could aim for the opposite of a relaxing time and take yourselves (and excitable kids) off to the Cavallino Matto theme park, 20 minutes away in Donoratico. Smaller ones, however, may prefer the calmer outing of a trip to Gallorose animal park, half an hour away.

Also in the area are lots of lovely little medieval villages to poke about in – Campiglia Marittima, Suvereto and Bolgheri are among those you might like to visit. And there also a good handful of wineries within a half-hour drive if you fancy popping in for a quick sample and to acquire a bottle or two to accompany your evening feasts.
