The Maremma region’s a fab place for those who like to go a-wandering – get your walking shoes on and off you go through woods and marshes, up and down hills and past striking black rocky cliffs. And of course there are coastal trails to follow too, with the promise of a cooling dip in the sea at the end. An equally excellent way to pass a day is to skip the walk and head straight to the beach on the Gulf of Baratti, for a splendid swathe of sand home to a sailing centre and windsurf rental shops. Piombino (20 minutes in the car) is the spot for a scuba diving trip or a boat to the island of Elba. Further relaxing times can be had in the thermal waters of Venturina Terme, 10 minutes’ drive away, or you could aim for the opposite of a relaxing time and take yourselves (and excitable kids) off to the Cavallino Matto theme park, 20 minutes away in Donoratico. A good handful of wineries are within a half-hour drive, to acquire a bottle or two to accompany your evening eats back at base.
