  • Off-grid, eco-friendly luxury resort in the Tuscany countryside
  • A five-minute drive from Sorano; 10 minutes from Pitigliano
  • Saltwater pool, hot tub, massages, gong baths and yoga sessions
Organic, ethical, eco-friendly… Agriturismo Biologico Sant’Egle ticks an awful lot of boxes – but most importantly, this off-grid Tuscany resort is a place where luxury and relaxation reign supreme. About five minutes’ drive from the village of Sorano, this stylish resort has been set up in a historic building that served as a customs house back in the 17th century, offering refreshment and hospitality to travellers crossing between the Papal State and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In more recent times it’s been restored using local materials and style to create a fabulously luxurious place to relax – and with eco-friendly aspects such as rainwater harvesting and solar energy. The immediate surroundings go some way towards creating that chilled-out atmosphere: this is a very quiet place with a simple soundtrack of birdsong and other natural noises. The green views all around help, too – and the outlook is equally good at night, when the truly dark skies often offer up a glittering display of stars overhead. Need a bit of extra help to get you really relaxed? You could start with a dip in the organic saltwater pool or a soak in the hot tub, then sign up for a yoga session, a massage, a gong bath or a session in the flotation tub. Having breakfast provided should get your day off to a relaxed start, and later you can order meals at the café or have them delivered to your accommodation. Once suitably refreshed, you may like to set off into the surrounding area for walks or bike rides (bikes available to hire on site) or days spent exploring the area’s many historic sights.

Local attractions

The whole ethos of this place is ‘slow travel’ – keeping things local and going at a nicely relaxed pace. With that in mind, your local village of Sorano (five minutes' drive) is a good place to start, tumbling down a hillside with historic streets to stroll through and the impressive Orsini Fortress to visit. Just outside the village, you can pick up the trail to the Vie Cave. Also close by are the Città del Tufo archaeological park (20 minutes), which has Etruscan tombs carved into the rocks, and several ancient fortresses such as Castle of Montorio (15 minutes) and Castle of Montebuono (45 minutes). Pitigliano (10 minutes) is another village with a lovely historic centre to explore. And what about some natural sights too? Lake Bolsena (20 minutes) and Riserva Naturale Regionale Selva del Lamone (half an hour) are nice places to take a walk, perhaps followed by a dip in the hot springs at Cascate del Mulino (35 minutes).
