Ah, Italian lakes – you may have heard once or twice that most of them are really rather special. Add to your itinerary an excursion to Lake Orta, the northern Italian lake to the west of Lake Maggiore (add Maggiore to your watery timetable too). It's a right pretty Piedmont place, lauded as the Italian lake still undiscovered by the tourist masses (so get here quick), and is a stunning spot surrounded by thick green woodland and home to the handsome medieval village of Orta San Giulio – do book, and speedily. And where might one stay while at this lushly scenic lake? Add Camping Royal to your waterside hol to access a nifty range of facilities and services while in this part of the Novaro province: there's a shuttle service to the local beaches and to Orta San Giulio just to start you off, and you can hire bikes of the traditional and the electric variety if you'd prefer to pedal off into the surroundings. (And as a quick look at the site pics will show, said surroundings are pretty spectacular here too.) A small summer pool is available, along with a roomy play area with swings, slides and a sandpit. The site has loads of room to wander around as well (again, see pics); after you've worked up an appetite, there's a small bar and pizzeria and a supermarket, and barbecues are permitted. For further supplies, Camping Royal is just over two kilometres from the town of Pettenasco.

Liked: Couldn’t fault the site at all Paolo and his team are amazing made us so welcome even gave us a lift into the town and back . We visited the local restaurant on Paolo’s recommendation glad we did best Italian food we’ve eaten in a long time. Couldn’t recommend camping Royal enough

Disliked: Bit of a twisty road especially as we had a very long Motorhome but well worth a few minutes stress

Liked: La piazzola abbastanza grande con colonnina integrata, gli alberi che circondano la piazzola oltre a mantenere la giusta ombreggiatura rendono il luogo intimo.la vista sul lago e la montagna è veramente unica.personale cordiale e professionale.

Disliked: La strada per arrivare,in certi punti è davvero impegnativa, la durata della doccia a gettoni si potrebbe migliorare,la presenza di un bottone da premere per avere l'acqua calda per lavare le stoviglie,sarebbe meglio installare un rubinetto con sensori per dosare meglio l acqua e ridurre ulteriormente sprechi.

Liked: Der Inhaber ist sehr freundlich. Wir hatten einen sehr schönen Stellplatz mit Sicht zum Lago di Orta.Der Pool ist klein aber sehr gepflegt. Brötchenservice und kleiner Shop. Toll zum Wandern und total unkompliziert mit unseren zwei Hunden. Würden sofort wieder dort buchen. Ein Punkt Abzug für den Sanitärbereich der sehr veraltet, jedoch immer sehr sauber war.

Disliked: Sanitärbereich veraltet

Liked: The view was stunning. Our host most welcoming and accommodating. The pitches were level and of an ample size. Showers, included in the pitch price, were clean and there was plenty of hot water

Disliked: Drive up needed care, but all the bad bends had mirrors, so it was relatively easy to see what was coming and plan the turn accordingly. We were towing a trailer and had no trouble. I suspect the driver of a long wheelbase motorhome would have a different experience

Local attractions

Among the villages around the lake is Orta San Giulio, the viewsome medieval settlement home to the Sacro Monte di Orta – one of the religious structures designated in 2003 as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy. Your offspring may be more excited to hear the local area has lakeside sands aplenty to play on/ have sandcastle competitions at, and that the site is within day trip distance (at 50 minutes' drive) from the fab Pombia Safari Park, to see cheetahs, rhinos and the park's white lions. The waterpark Ondaland and the theme park Bulè Adventure Park are each about an hour away. This is certainly an area for scenic and serene sightseeing, so pack a picnic and take the car to regional highlights like Lake Maggiore and access to its three islands; the Ossola valleys, for walks in a wildlife haven, and Mottarone, the mountain between the Orta and Maggiore lakes with spectacular views from its peak.

All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Changes to your holiday

Bookings cannot be amended within 7 day(s) of arrival.
Modifications are subject to a €10.00 (£8.33) fee.
