Ah, Italian lakes – you may have heard once or twice that most of them are really rather special. Add to your itinerary an excursion to Lake Orta, the northern Italian lake to the west of Lake Maggiore (add Maggiore to your watery timetable too). It's a right pretty Piedmont place, lauded as the Italian lake still undiscovered by the tourist masses (so get here quick), and is a stunning spot surrounded by thick green woodland and home to the handsome medieval village of Orta San Giulio – do book, and speedily. And where might one stay while at this lushly scenic lake? Add Camping Royal to your waterside hol to access a nifty range of facilities and services while in this part of the Novaro province: there's a shuttle service to the local beaches and to Orta San Giulio just to start you off, and you can hire bikes of the traditional and the electric variety if you'd prefer to pedal off into the surroundings. (And as a quick look at the site pics will show, said surroundings are pretty spectacular here too.) A small summer pool is available, along with a roomy play area with swings, slides and a sandpit. The site has loads of room to wander around as well (again, see pics); after you've worked up an appetite, there's a small bar and pizzeria and a supermarket, and barbecues are permitted. For further supplies, Camping Royal is just over two kilometres from the town of Pettenasco.

Liked: Very clean, well maintained park. Very good facilities, great location, very nice and helpful staff.

Disliked: The only things I disliked were that the toilets had no toilet seats, and the shower that I had to pay extra for was only Luke warm and would shut off immediately if the timer ran out.

From the manager: Gentile Bouchard Roger Siamo dispiaciuti che la nostra struttura non abbia soddisfatto le sue aspettative. La piazzola assegnata aveva l'erba appena tagliata e le aiuole perimetrali curate la vista era esclusiva sulla penisola di Orta e sull'isola di San Giulio una delle poche piazzole con questo privilegio abbiamo ospiti che da oltre 10 anni tornano regolarmente e richiedono quella sistemazione in particolare. Il bocco sanitari purtroppo non è di recentissima costruzione ma viene pulito più volte durante la giornata. Io personalmente l'ho aiutata nel posizionamento del suo camper accompagnandola nel percorso e facilitandole l'accesso. Le ho fornito le informazioni sul campeggio e sulla zona. Il Wi Fi come illustratole è disponibile gratuitamente attualmente solo nelle aree comuni di ingresso, bar e piscina. Il servizio di ristorazione non era disponibile nella sera del vostro arrivo ma abbiamo fornito un alternativa con il servizio di pizza con consegna in struttura. Restiamo a disposizione ed aperti a tutte le critiche costruttive al fine di poter migliorare il soggiorno di ogni futuro ospite. Cordialmente Paolo.

Disliked: Facilities were dated but not sure if its an Italian thing, pitches were small and the electric wasn't powerful enough to even boil a kettle so lucky we have LPG also!

Liked: Lovely surroundings well kept pitches Clean facilities Lake orta and orta SG stunning and much quieter than the bigger lakes of the area. Staff very pleasant and helpful Very good value for money in May time and better than staying in those more expensive touristy areas

Disliked: Bit of a climb up to campsite - very winding road and in some parts narrow. You need a vehicle as the walk up is a bit of an endurance test unless you are naturally athletic. You need to do your shopping before you get up there as not much up there as site shop closed until high season (not as advertised on pitch up which said cafe shut but shop open in may) But these negatives are wholly outweighed by the above positives

From the manager: La ringraziamo comunque per il suo commento ci spiace che la nostra struttura non si stata all'altezza delle sue aspettative anche se abbiamo cercato di accontentare le sue richieste. I servizi igienici vengono verificati e puliti più volte al giorno purtroppo durante il suo soggiorno a causa della pioggia si potevano trovare macchie di terriccio lascate dalle scarpe degli ospiti come è normale che sia in queste situazioni. Cerchiamo di controllare ed contestare il comportamento scorretto degli ospiti che quando non si sentono osservati ne approfittano per liberare i loro animali o li lasciano abbaiare senza motivo. Se avesse fatto presente subito il suo disagio saremmo intervenuti tempestivamente. Cordiali Saluti

Liked: Sehr netter Inhaber, der sich zuvorkommend um alle Anliegen & Wünsche gekümmert hat. Die Stellplätze sind etwas eingewachsen - alle Bäume und Büsche sind allerdings sehr gepflegt. Die Aussicht oben auf dem Berg auf den Lago d'Orta ist wunderschön.

Disliked: Der Nachteil der Lage ist, dass man mobil sein sollte, um in die Stadt zu kommen. Der 2,5km lange Weg nach unten ist ansonsten sehr sportlich.

Local attractions

Among the villages around the lake is Orta San Giulio, the viewsome medieval settlement home to the Sacro Monte di Orta – one of the religious structures designated in 2003 as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy. Your offspring may be more excited to hear the local area has lakeside sands aplenty to play on/ have sandcastle competitions at, and that the site is within day trip distance (at 50 minutes' drive) from the fab Pombia Safari Park, to see cheetahs, rhinos and the park's white lions. The waterpark Ondaland and the theme park Bulè Adventure Park are each about an hour away. This is certainly an area for scenic and serene sightseeing, so pack a picnic and take the car to regional highlights like Lake Maggiore and access to its three islands; the Ossola valleys, for walks in a wildlife haven, and Mottarone, the mountain between the Orta and Maggiore lakes with spectacular views from its peak.
