Ah, Italian lakes – you may have heard once or twice that most of them are really rather special. Add to your itinerary an excursion to Camping Royal at Lake Orta, the northern Italian lake to the west of Lake Maggiore (add Maggiore to your watery timetable too). It's a pretty Piedmont destination, lauded as the Italian lake still undiscovered by the tourist masses (so get here quickly), and is a stunning spot surrounded by thick green woodland and home to the handsome medieval village of Orta San Giulio. Set well away from busy roads, the site is within 15 minutes' drive of Orta San Giulio, and you can hire bicycles of the traditional and the electric variety if you'd prefer to pedal off into the surroundings. (And as a quick look at the site pics will show, said surroundings are pretty spectacular.) A roomy play area with swings, slides and a sandpit is on site, along with a small pool (open during high season only). The site has loads of room to wander around as well (again, see pics); after you've worked up an appetite, head to the small bar, pizzeria and supermarket (all open during high season only), and barbecues are permitted. For further supplies, Camping Royal is just over two kilometres from the town of Pettenasco.

喜欢 Lovely situation with a view out over the lake. Very peaceful overnight. Very friendly hosts. Everything very clean. End of season so some things shut. There are a couple of restaurants just up the road.

不喜欢 Hill from the main road to the campsite could be a challenge for long or towing vehicles. Access to some of the pitches very tight. Water in the showers got to slightly warm at the most.

喜欢 The location of this campsite is not for the faint hearted as the mountainous road to reach it is challenging and we were extremely disappointed to learn that there is NO shuttle bus service provided ( as advertised by Pitch Up) The walk downhill is very steep and would be impossible for anyone with mobility issues. Our pitch was a good size and we had shade. The ‘sanitaires’ were outdated but clean and it was helpful having a washing machine. Staff were helpful and friendly The pool was a bonus!

喜欢 Couldn’t fault the site at all Paolo and his team are amazing made us so welcome even gave us a lift into the town and back . We visited the local restaurant on Paolo’s recommendation glad we did best Italian food we’ve eaten in a long time. Couldn’t recommend camping Royal enough

不喜欢 Bit of a twisty road especially as we had a very long Motorhome but well worth a few minutes stress

Among the villages around the lake is Orta San Giulio, the viewsome medieval settlement home to the Sacro Monte di Orta – one of the religious structures designated in 2003 as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy. Your offspring may be more excited to hear the local area has lakeside sands aplenty to play on/ have sandcastle competitions at, and that the site is within day trip distance (at 50 minutes' drive) from the fab Pombia Safari Park, to see cheetahs, rhinos and the park's white lions. The waterpark Ondaland and the theme park Bulè Adventure Park are each about an hour away. This is certainly an area for scenic and serene sightseeing, so pack a picnic and take the car to regional highlights like Lake Maggiore and access to its three islands; the Ossola valleys, for walks in a wildlife haven, and Mottarone, the mountain between the Orta and Maggiore lakes with spectacular views from its peak.
