On the outskirts of the village of the same name, Camping de Thoissey - Val de Saône sits where the Chalaronne river flows into the Saône, in the eastern department of Ain. The vineyards of the Beaujolais region (15 minutes’ drive) extend just across the Saône and are excellent destinations for interesting (wine-soaked) excursions. Hold that thought. Before driving (or cycling) through the French countryside looking for wineries and cellars, take some time to discover where you’ll be staying. Shaded by tall trees, the site has plenty to keep the entire family entertained, including a play area. For water-based activities, make your way to the marina on the river, where you can arrange a boat tour or a fishing expedition. The calm waters of the Chalaronne are popular with paddleboarders and kayakers, or you can have a go at wakeboarding and waterskiing at Totem Wake Park (20 minutes). After a meal at the on-site restaurant (which serves burgers, pizzas and other classics), you can relax with a drink at the riverside tables, watching a game of pétanque and catching the sunset before heading back to your accommodation to get ready for an evening of organised entertainment. In addition to several restaurants and cafés, Thoissey village has a bakery and a grocery store for your provisions (should you want to do your own cooking or decide to have a barbecue). The site is also next to a public swimming pool (open in July and August only).

Liked Good pool.

Disliked Extremely noisey campsite. The onsite music was extremely loud despite being a good distance away. The onsite summer camps meant there were at least 40 children aged between 5 and 15 running around the site seemingly unattended; the toilets were constantly full of children running, screaming and turning my the lights / water on and off. When walking in groups there seemed to be one adult to around 20 children. This went on from around 7am until at least 12.30am! I would avoid this site during the summer holidays for this reason. On site pool bar and snack hit by reception were not selling hot food during our stay which was inconvenient. Most people agreed they wouldn’t stay for longer than a few nights.

Liked Food on site. Reliable good amperage electricity. Easy pitching on large pitches.
Free access to public swimming pool by site. Helpful staff with good English spoken. Very pleasant quiet location by river. Much to do in the area but equally a good location for an overnight stay. Good tarmac main site roads produced no dust.

Disliked Pitch numbering could be clearer as some are a little overgrown. Due to random pitching by others site electric boxes could be full. Wifi by reception was slightly inconvenient.

Liked Grote ruime plaatsen. Doen niet moeilijk wat het erop wilt zetten.

Disliked Sanitair gebouw niet echt schoon.
Camping mag overal beter worden onderhouden

Restaurant bij de camping kwaliteit eten prima. Systeem echter op zondag niet ons ding. Vooraf betalen keuze uit mosselen of hamburger en afhalen bij een ander loket. Voor een nachtje was het prima.

Liked Clean, relaxing site with good facilities. For those with bikes, excellent access to the cycle path along the river. A short walk or cycle onto Thoissey village with a nice little shop, boulangerie, bar and a few restaurants. Site has a public pool which you have free access to as reception will give you cards. Pool is lovely. Restaurant above wasn't busy. Bar by river was a great pit stop. Night market on Wednesday was lovely. Toilets clean - take your own loo roll! Showers good. Lots of French families enjoying their stay and always happy to wave and smile at the funny little Brits ( a rare breed here).
Little beaches off river (you need to cycle or walk there) for your own dip or cool down for pooches.

Disliked No where to fill up the van with water as taps were push down rather than twist.
Lots of old, shabby caravans that weren't being used.

Liked Prima camping voor doorreis of een paar dagen. Wij waren hier 2 nachten en hebben het erg naar zin gehad. Het was wel oud maar zeker gezellig. Beetje kneuterig met wc onder je oksel naar toilet gebouw. Toiletblok was oud maar schoon.
Rustig, heel fijn zwembad, leuk restaurantje bij het zwembad en het plekje bij de rivier achter de receptie waar je wat kunt eten en drinken vonden wij in de avond zeer gezellig. Vriendelijke medewerkers.
Leuke route om te wandelen of fietsen langs de rivier. Mooie dorpjes in de buurt.

Disliked Ik vond het prima. Toilet gebouw wat verouderd, wc papier zelf meenemen en douches met druk knop.

Big cats, giraffes and lemurs are among the residents at Touroparc Zoo (10 minutes' drive), which stretches over 30 luxuriant acres. There are also attractions for children, especially younger ones, with a traditional carousel and a miniature train. Meanwhile, adventurous kids can go on a tree-climbing course. Wine lovers should head to Hameau Duboeuf (10 minutes), a theme park with a distinct vinous focus. Interactive exhibits (such as a flight over the vineyards of Beaujolais) illustrate the local viticultural heritage, and you can also visit a cellar with oak and stainless-steel vats – before the inevitable tasting session. North of the site is Mâcon (half an hour), a city that'll surely please foodies and fans of history.
