General

  • Ardèche riverside site with direct access to a private beach
  • Wellness centre with Jacuzzi, hammam and treatment room
  • Book horse riding, canyoning, rock climbing and more at reception

Fancy a dip? What a spiffing idea. But where shall you splash down? In the heated outdoor swimming pool, perhaps, the paddling pool if you're a small person, or the cooling waters of the Ardèche river, which flows directly past the site and its splendid and sizeable private beach area. Or maybe you’ll prefer to wallow in the warmth of the hot tub (a blissfully bubbly experience that’s worth the small extra charge – plus you'll have access to the hammam and treatment room too).

These are among the tricky decisions awaiting guests at La Chapoulière (it’s a hard life, n’est-çe-pas?) And it’s not just the aquatic activities that vie for attention at this fably family-friendly site between Ruoms and Sampzon. For the amusement of small folk and larger, there’s also a multisports court, a playground, table tennis and a games room with billiards, table football and video games.

You’ll also most likely need to be clearing a little space in your schedule to put in a bit of pétanque practice – they take the sport pretty seriously around here, and it’s worth being aware that if you sign up to take part in one of the regular tournaments you’ll be playing in front of an audience in the adjacent grandstand (no pressure, huh?)

Should your ball-lobbing skills not be quite ready for public scrutiny, perhaps you’d prefer to strut your stuff at a karaoke night or disco instead? Come along in high season and you’ll have a whole range of activities, workshops, outings and entertainment to select from, including all of the above plus fun sessions for kids and aqua gym classes for those who may have overindulged on the croissant front (easily done, as fresh ones are delivered every day for a mighty tempting brekkie).

In high season further feasting can be done at the site’s restaurant, which serves up local and international dishes to eat on the outdoor terrace or take away. There’s also a small shop open in summer for those of you who’d like to do it your own way, along with a supermarket five minutes’ drive away.

Concerned about the effects of all this noshing on your waistline? Don’t fret too much – you’ll be needing all the calories for your busy days out and about locally. The gorgeous Gorges de l’Ardèche natural reserve is just down the road, and all that hiking, horse riding, canyoning, kayaking and village wandering requires an awful lot of energy – best have that ice cream after all, non?

the river being so close made the swimming pool not needed
The staff were very helpful and always friendly and the take away pizza place was ideal with a good service

    Disliked:

unfortunately, our visit was very windy, but you cannot blame the site for that

The main shops are a good 35 mins walk away so a bike or car will make things easier

Local attractions

There’s heaps to do in the area around La Chapoulière, a part of the world so beaut it’ll most likely inspire outdoorsy wanderings from even those who naturally choose to shun such activities. To make life super-easy, some activities can be booked at reception, so pop down and have a chat with the friendly folks down there and they’ll be able to hook you up with with horse riding, treetop adventure courses, canyoning and rock climbing as well as organising bike and canoe hire or pointing you in the direction of good hiking routes.

You can’t possibly leave this area without taking in two of its finest sights (perhaps some of the finest in all the land, in fact) – the Pont d’Arc stone arch and the Gorges de l’Ardèche, both of which make mighty fine viewing from a canoeing or kayaking trip or a hike. It’ll take you 15 minutes or so to drive to the edge of the natural reserve that encompasses both of these fab geological features. While you’re over there you may also want to delve beneath the surface to visit the Aven Marzal cave and visit the dinosaur park.

Also nearby are lots of lovely little villages for poking about in: try Ruoms or Sampzon (both 10 minutes’ drive/an energetic 45-minute walk), or beaut Labeaume and Balazuc (15 minutes’ drive) for markets, little shops and historic streets and buildings. And of course there are the châteaux – 12th-century Château de Vogüé, with its round towers at each corner, and hilltop Château de Montréal (home to some fab medieval-themed activities for the small fry) are both about a 25-minute drive from the site.
