Fancy a dip? There are options aplenty for this at the Ardèche site of La Chapoulière: you could plunge into the heated outdoor pool, wallow in the warmth of the site hot tub, or dip your toes in the cooling waters of the Ardèche flowing directly past the site.
These are among the tricky decisions awaiting guests at La Chapoulière (it’s a hard life, n’est-çe-pas?), and it’s not just the aquatic activities that vie for attention at this fably family-friendly site between Ruoms and Sampzon. For the amusement of small folk and larger, there’s also a multisports court, a playground, table tennis, a games room with billiards, table football and video games, and a splendid and sizeable private beach area.
As well as all this, come along in high season to have a whole range of activities, workshops, outings and entertainment to pick from. Also in high season, feasting can be done at the site’s restaurant and its menus of local and international dishes to eat on the outdoor terrace or take away; there’s also a small shop open in summer, along with a supermarket five minutes’ drive away.
Concerned about the effects of all this noshing on your waistline? The gorgeous Gorges de l’Ardèche natural reserve is just down the road for hiking, horse riding, canyoning, kayaking and village wandering.

Local attractions
There’s heaps to do in the area around La Chapoulière. The friendly folk at reception can book some activities including horse riding, treetop adventure courses, canyoning and rock climbing for you, as well as organising bike and canoe hire or pointing you in the direction of good hiking routes.
You can’t leave this area without taking in two of its finest sights (perhaps some of the finest in all the land): the Pont d’Arc stone arch and the Gorges de l’Ardèche, both of which make mighty fine viewing from a canoeing or kayaking trip or a hike, and both in the natural reserve reachable within 15 minutes' drive. While you’re over there you may also want to delve beneath the surface to visit the Aven Marzal cave and visit the dinosaur park.
Also nearby are lots of little villages for poking about in: try Ruoms or Sampzon (both 10 minutes’ drive or an energetic 45-minute walk), or Labeaume and Balazuc (15 minutes’ drive) for markets, little shops and historic streets and buildings.
