General

  • Riverside site 15 minutes' walk from Guillestre town centre
  • Half an hour's drive from walks and watersports at Lac de Serre-Ponçon
  • Next to a municipal outdoor swimming pool with kids' pool

Mountains, gorgeous green valleys and clear Alpine lakes – oui, it’s really rather a rather beaut area that surrounds Camping La Rochette (take a quick flick through the pics for confirmation of this fact).

Just outside the little town of Guillestre, the five-hectare site is flanked on either side by the Écrins National Park and the Queyras Regional Natural Park, meaning ample chances for visitors to get up close and personal with the scenery on foot, by bike on horseback or in a canoe. Parachuting, canyoning, whitewater rafting and climbing are top picks for anyone in search of a bit of an adrenaline boost.

Should you prefer to regard mountains as a backdrop rather than a playground, there’s plenty to occupy your time on site while you admire from afar. A gentle game of pétanque or table tennis, perhaps, or something rather more energetic on the tennis courts or volleyball pitch. Or you may choose simply to put your feet up and gaze out over the greenery from the comfort of your pitch, perhaps in the company of a pizza or a drink you’ve acquired from the snack bar.

If all the view-admiring doesn’t appeal to your small fry, they can entertain themselves at the playground or with the activities laid on for their amusement during the summer months. And if any of you are in danger of overheating, you can always trot just outside the site and pay a small charge to dive into the municipal pool that’s right next door.

A gentle 15-minute riverside stroll from the site takes you to the centre of Guillestre for foodie foraging in the town’s restaurants or to stock up on supermarket supplies to take back and host your own feast back at the ranch – around the smoking coals of your barbecue should you wish. Morning-deniers will, however, no doubt be chuffed to hear that there’s no need to complete this walk at sunrise as the site has a bread delivery service to bring freshly baked goodies to your door for a minimal-effort brekkie.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 21/06 and 30/08 (subject to weather conditions).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Local attractions

If you like to get spend your hols getting active in gorgeous surroundings, you’ve come to the right place. Walkers and cyclists have the varied trails of both the Écrins National Park and the Queyras Regional Natural Park nearby (the boundaries of each can be reached with a drive of 20 minutes or so) and the GR58 and GR5 long-distance routes pass close to the site, too – the latter stretching to around 2,500 kilometres for you hardcore hiking types.

Aquatic adventures await on the Durance river, which runs along the edge of the national park. Depending on your desired adrenaline levels, head to Saint-Clément-sur-Durance for canoeing or kayaking or to Eygliers for whitewater rafting – both are less than 15 minutes’ drive from the site. Also in Eygliers is a riding centre that offers pony and horse riding lessons and treks into the mountains or along the river.

The biggest (and probably most beaut) lake in the area is the Lac de Serre-Ponçon, half an hour’s drive away. Come over here to look out over the fab views, take a walk around the edge or skim the surface while waterskiing or windsurfing.

Take a break from all the outdoorsy activity by driving for around 15 minutes to get to Mont-Dauphin and visit the UNESCO-listed Vauban fortifications built in the late 17th century. There’s another of these fortifications up in Briançon, 40 minutes away; the streets of the old town make for some most pleasant wanderings as well, with plenty of little cafés to take a rest (it is, after all, alleged to be the highest town in Europe).
