Mountains, gorgeous green valleys and clear Alpine lakes – oui, it’s really rather a lush area that surrounds Camping La Rochette. Just outside the little town of Guillestre, the 12-acre site is flanked by the Écrins National Park and the Queyras Regional Natural Park, meaning there are ample chances for visitors to get up close and personal with the scenery on foot, by bike, on horseback or in a canoe. Parachuting, canyoning, whitewater rafting and climbing are top picks for anyone in search of a bit of an adrenaline boost. Should you prefer to regard mountains as a backdrop rather than a playground, there’s plenty to occupy your time on site. A gentle game of pétanque or table tennis, perhaps, or something more energetic on the tennis courts… or you could just gaze out over the greenery from a secluded spot, perhaps in the company of a pizza or a drink from the snack bar… Kids can entertain themselves at the playground or with the activities laid on for their amusement during the summer months. And if any of you are in danger of overheating, you can always trot just outside the site and pay a small charge to dive into the municipal pool that’s right next door. A gentle 15-minute riverside stroll from the site takes you to the centre of Guillestre for foodie foraging in the town’s restaurants or to stock up on supermarket supplies to take back and host your own feast back at the ranch – around the smoking coals of your barbecue should you wish. The on-site shop sells fresh bread (in July and August) and drinks.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked Good location

Disliked Toilets were very dirty and more generally the site didn’t look very well maintained. There were a lot young men the night we stayed (and loud rugby songs).

Pretty much everything, great staff lovely campsite, very peaceful.…

Local attractions

Walkers and cyclists have the varied trails of both the Écrins National Park and the Queyras Regional Natural Park nearby: the boundaries of each can be reached with a drive of 20 minutes. The biggest lake in the area is the Lac de Serre-Ponçon, half an hour’s drive away. Come over here to look out over the fab views, take a walk around the edge or skim the surface while waterskiing or windsurfing. It's a 15-minute drive to Mont-Dauphin and its UNESCO-listed Vauban fortifications. There’s another of these fortifications up in Briançon, 40 minutes away, along with plenty of little cafés to take a rest (it is, after all, alleged to be the highest town in Europe).
