Honk. That’s the sound of the seals of the Somme saying you should come and see them from your Somme campsite. Seal spotting, birdwatching and a chuffingly good steam railway from which to see the animal sights are all among the wildlifey themed things to do at the Bai du Somme/Somme Bay in the Somme region, the biggest estuary in northern France and with thousands of migrating birds stopping off around its nature reserve Parc du Marquenterre each winter. A place to trumpet about, shurely?
Six of Picardie’s jardins remarquables including the Jardins de Valloires are in the area too, and we’d also add to the Somme camping itinerary a day trekking around Picardie’s capital city Amiens and a few days around the seaside resorts of the Picardie coast… But, as even small people will likely know, the Somme department is also one of the major war commemoration areas in northern France, and many thousands of people come to the area each year to visit the battlefields and the many memorials to soldiers from several countries who died here. Many Somme campsites will have info on what commemoration sites are nearby or ask on site for details of nearby places on the Remembrance Trail.
