Set deep in the countryside of the Marais Poitevin, Le Marais Sauvage is a family-friendly campsite just south of the small village of Le Mazeau. The surrounding landscape is mostly made up of grassy marshlands, peaceful forests and pretty canals that are great for boating – so much so that the local area is sometimes known as 'La Venise Verte' (Green Venice). Guests spending the night here have access to well-maintained and spacious pitches, all of which are a short walk from the site's handy facilities. As well as essentials like toilets and showers, the site has a snack bar for light refreshments, laundry facilities, a service point for motorhomes, a small on-site shop and a play area for the kids; well-behaved dogs are also welcome. The centre of Le Mazeau is a short stroll away, where there is a restaurant and a bakery where you can pick up fresh bread and tasty pastries in the morning. Slightly further afield, the larger town of Niort (half an hour's drive) has a definite charm with its old buildings and pedestrian shopping streets, while day trips to the coast can be easily arranged as well – it's just under an hour to La Rochelle.

Liked: Really nice small size Campsite, friendly personal approach. Lovely area which is great for cycling. Good size pitches, far enough apart and greenery in between so you get the feeling of some privacy. Very quiet at night. Cleanest sanitary facility we’ve been to so far, very impressed! And wifi included on your pitch which was a surprise but appreciated

Liked: If you've booked to stay at this site, you're in for a treat, it's fantastic! beautiful surroundings, fantastic pitches, all with electric and water, the host is extremely friendly and helpful, a lovely little bar/shop set in beautiful settings! just wish id have stayed longer, Next year I will, definitely!!!

Liked: The site was clean, attractive and well maintained. The staff were very welcoming.

Disliked: Unfortunately, due to no fault of the site, we were disturbed, literally all night, on our first night by a techno "rave" extremely close by which started at 10pm and went on until 6 am.

With 112,000 hectares of canals and nature to explore, the surrounding Marais Poitevin regional natural park is a great place for boating, canoeing, kayaking or stand up paddleboarding. Fishing, cycling, walking and other leisure activities to help you feel at one with nature are also readily available in the immediate vicinity – for recommendations, head to the nearest tourist office in the pretty riverside town of Coulon (15 minutes' drive), which is also a good place to start boat trips. Elsewhere, the pretty ruins of the Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Maillezais (15 minutes) is worth a visit for anyone interested in the local area's Catholic and Huguenot heritage. Admission

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.
Unsupervised minors must have a letter of authorisation from their parents or legal guardian.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.

Extras

Motorbike(s) can be brought instead of the car(s) included.

General

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.
