  • Serene site with thermal spa facilities surrounded by a forest
  • A five-minute drive to central Velingrad and 50 to Batak reservoir
  • Outdoor and indoor pools, wellness treatments, saunas and playgrounds
Your mantra at Camping Velingrad, in the place known as the spa capital of the Balkans? Steam, soak and repeat. The snazzy wellness centre at this Pazardzhik site, a five-minute drive from the centre of Velingrad, is full of facilities fed by the mineral water from the town’s hot springs. And you'll want to take your time with those wellness options… there’s an indoor swimming pool for heated dips, two types of sauna, a steam bath, a cold shock pool and a relaxation room. Other amenities adding to your swish stay include showers, dressing areas and a massage treatment room, plus the whole centre is built solely from chemical-free natural materials. Breathe in the scents of traditional herbs at the tea bar before or after your spa session – a drink here is complimentary – or step away from the grounds to follow the walking paths filled with woody aromas through the serene and secluded surrounding forests. Outdoor activities are also sorted at the three open-air swimming pools, surrounded by loungers and parasols, or down at the pretty creek on the grounds. One pool’s set up for kids, while another has a hydromassage area and the two blissful bigger options differ in temperature. Take yourself over to the tavern for meals after drying off, or cook up eats in the well-equipped kitchen before cosying up next to the fireplace to dine with a view of the Pazardzhik mountains. Fantasising about a stay but troubled by the thought the setting might be too grown-up for kids? Fear not: this complex also has an outdoor playground and a playroom with table tennis and board games for smaller spa-goers.

Local attractions

Spa days take centre stage at this balneological base in Bulgaria, but there are also other attractions to amble towards in the region. Hiking and biking are big here in the warmer months, and the ski slopes open up once the snowy weather hits. Dams for fishing, dense forests for animal-spotting and lush landscapes are also all around, while in town (five minutes’ drive) restaurants serving authentic Bulgarian food are a cinch to source. Toying with the idea of taking a day trip? Batak reservoir (50 minutes) is a hub for watersports like boating and jetskiing, as well as being ace for anglers. It’s at the foothills of Golyama Syutkya peak, which reaches 2,186 metres above sea level in the Rhodope mountains, so it also serves as a grand starting-off point for hikes.
