General

  • Small and laidback countryside site 500 metres from a ski school
  • Restaurant, playground and heated outdoor pool surrounded by gardens
  • Easy access to the hiking and mountain biking of Zilleretal

Guests of all ages – and inclinations – will be thoroughly sorted at CampingDorf Hofer in Austria's Schwaz district, for this laidback and comfy site is well placed for exploring the region and has stacks of space to relax or to get stuck into the leisure facilities available for all.

A peaceful, cosy and easygoing vibe makes up the atmosphere of this amiable site, run by helpful and friendly Silvia and Guntram and their family team. The heated outdoor pool is surrounded by gardens for sunbathing and sitting back, and the restaurant prides itself on its service and sociable nature as well as its food. Kids have a games room indoors, and a roomy playground under the sky for sliding, scrambling, climbing on ropes or getting nicely covered in sand.

Amenities include centrally-located toilets and showers, a token-operated washer and dryer, and facilities for recycling, chemical disposal and device charging. Everything is fully checked for the start of each season and updated where needed; the team makes improvements every year.

CampingDorf Hofer is under 10 minutes' walk from the village and snowsports centres of Zell im Zillertal. A ski school with kids' races, activities and ballooning is half a kilometre away; hikes are all around (over 1,400 kilometres' worth in the region), and you can go cycling or mountain biking on routes to keep you pedalling for weeks.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/07 and 31/08 (subject to weather conditions).

The staff in reception were very friendly and helpful on arrival with a large pack of local information provided. The site was easily accessible in a large motorhome with generous pitches with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The toilet and shower facilities were quite luxurious and I chose to wash up in their facilities rather than use the motorhome sink so I could use their spray jet taps! The on site bar and restaurant were welcoming and the food was well priced and delicious. The local town was a five minute walk away with a good selection of bars, cafes and bakeries. We found lot's of activities within the local area including a great Toboggan run and chair lift. Our only regret was that we didn't book a longer stay!

Staff were friendly and helpful. You got an allocated pitch. Good area easily accessible to everywhere. Supermarket near by.

    Disliked:

Toilet block was not big enough for the site and needed cleaning more than once a day. It was also quite expensive to stay here. Wifi was very very poor.

Local attractions

Hiking first – around these spectacular Tyrol mountain surrounds? You can latch onto the weekly hiking trip arranged each week from the site by Silvia and Guntram, or stride out on your own around some of the hundreds of kilometres of high-up paths.

The area has 1,400 kilometres of well-signposted walks of all levels, including 400 kilometres' worth in the Zillertall region. Try hiking across the border from Zillertal to Salzburg, tackling one the nine alpine paths graded difficult, or taking it easy with a family ramble along the woodland, yodelling or culinary treats trails. (You can take one of four mountain lifts or the hiking bus up to several starting points if you want to conserve a bit of energy.)

Cycling and mountain biking are excellent around here too, with 800 kilometres of trails in the region including 325 kilometres from Zillertal to Salzburg's Pinzgau. You could also try the 31-kilometre Zillertal Bike Path, easily reached from the site, and come back in style on the Zillertalbahn, which transports bikes for free.

Winter sports? You're in the right place: the ski school only half a kilometre from the site can give lessons in skiing and snowboarding in several languages, to individuals or groups. If you're able to swish about on your own, a free bus runs from the site to the main station of the Zillertal Arena: get a Zillertaler super ski pass for access to all 179 lifts throughout the Zillertal, on over 500 kilometres of slopes.
