Camping Palfau: The pitches

General

  • Family-run campsite amid alpine scenery in the Gesäuse National Park
  • Five minutes’ drive to gorge walks and Mendlingtal Adventure World
  • Rafting and kayaking on site; restaurant and shop in walking distance

If you look for a combination of spectacular nature and adventure on your camping holidays, this could be the right place for you. In a magical alpine setting surrounded by meadows, orchards and forests, family-run Camping Palfau is located in Landl’s Gesäuse National Park and is the springboard to rafting and canyoning adventures on the Salzatal river as well as hiking and cycling in the mountains.

The pitches are scattered across various tree-shaded terrains – out of high season you can pick your own spot – all with a sunny location and mountain views. Facilities across the campsite include a communal firepit, electric hook-ups and water, as well as wifi in the public areas.

Drinks, coffee and ice cream (great for the kids) are available 24/7 on a self-serve basis, and a small essentials store is within a five minutes’ walk, along with a wooden, chalet-style restaurant that serves hot food until 8pm. On summer evenings, film screenings are held at the site.

What an amazing place. The highlight of our 5 week trip. The site is very informal and the pitches reflect this which feels a bit strange at first but works really well. The owners are very welcoming and want guests to mix so you can help yourself to beer, soft drinks, coffee or ice cream and pay before you go which we thought was fantastic. It’s a rafting place so people go for the day to go rafting but they come and go so it doesn’t get too busy. There’s a lovely hotel nearby (5 mins walk) where you can get a lovely meal. The scenery is exquisite I couldn’t stop taking photos and the atmosphere of the campsite is so relaxing you feel like you’ve been doing yoga. I would love to go back sometime and might even have a go at rafting next time.

Excellent site for quiet tent camping23/05/2022

Lovely location, quiet and green and mountainous. Power and water well supported per tent location and nice green grass everywhere. We (father and son) had clean hot showers and 2 men’s toilets (same for women) shared with a rafting company HQ on the site. The open “clubhouse” is friendly and outdoorsy with lots of space for relaxing quietly (with free adequate wifi (we just wanted basic connectivity) and pay as you use drinks cabinet).A village shop with essential amenities is a short walk from the lovely campsite and the site’s farm owners are very friendly. English spoken too. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back.

Lucky to have found in one go on Pitchup exactly what I wanted! Few tent sites without crowded RVs side by side and people doing BBQs and dogs etc. in Austria

    Disliked:

Nothing! Maybe slightly more toilet privacy as the common showers and loos (camping+other activities) tend to be full with the rafting groups during the day.Toilets are about 200m from tent site (no problem).

Local attractions

Camping Palfau is an ideal starting point for whitewater tours on the Salzatal river nearby – you can book rafting and canyoning tours directly on site as well as hire all the gear you need. Walking excursions can be organised too, including testing hikes past cliffside waterfalls in the awe-inspiring Palfauer Wasserlochklamm gorge (five minutes’ drive).

The UNESCO-listed Nature and Geopark Styrian Eisenwurzen (25 minutes) is another fantastic spot for adrenaline-inducing whitewater rafting as well as exploring deep inside subterranean limestone complexes like Kraus Cave (10 minutes).

Thankfully, the geopark is also home of gentler pursuits: Mendlingtal Adventure World (five minutes’ drive) highlights the region’s forest heritage with tours of an historic forgeman’s house, grain mill and a bakery. See how wood was once transported down the river at the Austrian Forest Museum Silvanum (15 minutes), where there are also sledge- and raft-rides to keep the kids entertained, or you can tire them out further with high-ropes courses and archery lessons.
