General

  • Spectacularly scenic setting on a 20-acre smallholding
  • Overlooking the valley of the River Teme
  • Comfy and cosy pod with insulation and heating

Brandy House Farm was once a 150-acre hill farm and is now run as a 20-acre smallholding. The farmhouse, a traditional Welsh longhouse, was built several hundred years ago and has an attractive well-established garden. The land behind is terraced and landscaped for guests to wander.

The farm's accommodation is in a Morphpod, a cosy and fully-insulated camping pod for warm and comfy nights. The pod is spacious and has a floor-to-ceiling double-glazed window complete with spectacular views, and a canopied verandah with enough space for four people to eat out under the stars or be sheltered from the rain. An electric heater is included for indoors.

If you love camping, the pod combines outdoor living with ease and extra comfort. Breakfast can even be brought to the door.

Toilet and shower facilities are at the farmstead and you'll find a waterless eco-toilet 20 yards from the pod.

The farm has several Jacob sheep, a small flock of Welsh Black Mountain sheep and its own chickens. The rest of the menagerie includes three horses (two in work and a rescue pony), collie dog Bonnie, Marmaduke the cat and the children’s guinea pigs and rabbits.

Absolutely amazing time at Brandy House Farm. The weather was fantastic and only wished we'd booked more time here! It was a last minute booking and the accommodated for us so quickly. Extremely friendly hosts so sorry we didn't get to say bye in the morning to you! Will definitely be booking again & have already been telling everyone about it. Definitely get the fire too! It was so lovely to have that. Well worth the money and parking and things were great. Didn't have to walk far. Easy to find it was just perfect!!

Was perfect for camping without the 'tent' element but all the adventure required that a seven year old needs!! We LOVED the added extra of our little friend Timmy cat who chose to spend the night with us. Tea on arrival was just what we needed and very welcomed, thank you. A stomp up the hills in the morning woke us up before the drive back. We would certainly stay again.

Directions

We are 'off the beaten track' and public transport is limited. The best way to reach us is by car. However, there are mainline train stations at both Knighton and Newtown. We are happy to arrange a taxi to meet you from the train if you are planning a walking or cycling break with us. There is also a public coach service to Newtown.

If you are approaching from Knighton, turn up a sharp left as you pass the speed limit sign on reaching the village of Felindre, opposite the village sign (please note that the Brandy House is not signed). Continue up the lane over the two cattle grids and we are at the top about 150 metres from the main road.

If you are approaching from Newtown, leave on the A483 (signed Llandrindod Wells) to Dolfor. Turn left onto the B4355. Go through the village of Felindre and as you leave it, turn up to your right just before the end of speed limit sign (please note that the Brandy House is not signed). Continue up the lane over the two cattle-grids and we are at the top about 150 metres from the main road.

If you are using a satnav or Google Maps and are approaching us from the north they will more than likely take you the shorter scenic route through tiny and steep lanes missing out Newtown.

Local attractions

This is a rural area in stunning scenery and in a remote location, overlooking the valley of the River Teme creating the border between England and Wales.

The surrounding area is ideal for exploring by foot, bike or horse and within a short distance are lots of interesting things to see and do among the wooded hills, rivers and streams and pastureland with the occasional cornfield or two. The road to Newtown is spectacular, taking you past the source of the River Teme, and as you drive over the top you'll more than likely see Welsh mountain ponies on the hill.

You can walk, ride or cycle from the site. The national trail Glyndwr’s Way passes through Brandy House Farm, mainly for walkers, with some sections for horses and bikes. Beacon Hill, a 6000-acre upland nature reserve, is an excellent place to see wildlife. The heathclad landscape attracts birds like the nesting wheatear, meadow pipit, stonechat, merlin and peregrine among others. It's wild without being rugged and an excellent place to begin walking in the area.

Cyclists will find great cross-country riding on the doorstep and easy journeys to several world class mountain bike centres with freeride, downhill and uplift facilities.

For horse riders unlimited off-road riding is on the doorstep. Owner Medina rides the hills regularly and has put together a selection of her favourite routes for you to try, suggesting the easiest to find direction for each route (she can help you plan longer routes if you would like). The farm's route portfolio contains routes for you to copy onto your own maps ranging from five to 25 miles; if you want to ride further she can help you plan that too.

The nearest towns are Knighton and Newtown. Knighton is a pretty market town, the only town to be built on the 1200 year old Offa's Dyke. The town lies in the Teme Valley, cushioned by the green hills of Powys and Shropshire.

A little further afield you will find Clun, in the south Shropshire Hills in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to the border with Wales in the middle Welsh Marches. The market town of Ludlow with its famed castle and its reputation as a centre for some of Britain's best food and drink is not far away.

Presteigne, Llandrindod Wells the Victorian spa town and Builth Wells, home of the Royal Welsh showground, are all within a short drive and all worth a visit.
