General
- Cosy stays on a 30-acre smallholding 20 minutes from Knighton
- Overlooking the River Teme and on Glyndwr's Way National Trail
- Order a farmhouse breakfast or have it delivered to you
A Morphpod – what be that then? Banish any images of space-age blobs: Morphpod at Brandy House Farm is in fact a collection of comfy spots scattered around the gorgeous gardens of a 30-acre family-run smallholding, centred around a traditional Welsh longhouse.
Pick a Powys plot here and you’ll be well placed for all sorts of walks and other outdoorsy activities: Brandy House Farm is right on the border of England and Wales, on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and with Glyndwr’s Way National Trail passing through its grounds.
Not that you’ll need to stray far for views – there’s much to gawp at from the site, and plenty of space in which to lounge while doing so. Picnic tables are strategically placed to take in the vistas, and you can hire firepits to keep your mitts toasty.
Sustenance can be picked up at the supermarket in Knighton (20 minutes away) and then either coal-cooked on your barbecue or heated up in the small communal kitchen (where there’s a microwave, a kettle and a fridge). Pub meals are a couple of miles away if you’d rather leave all the prep to the pros. Breakfast is of course the most important meal of the day – book ahead for a full-on farmhouse feast or to have a basket delivered for a cosy breakfast in bed/in your garden/out in the field.
Toilet and shower facilities are a short stroll away at the farmstead and a waterless eco-toilet is close to the pitches.

There are mainline train stations at both Knighton and Newtown and site staff will be happy to arrange a taxi to meet you from the train. There is also a public coach service to Newtown.
If you are approaching from Knighton, turn up a sharp left as you pass the speed limit sign on reaching the village of Felindre, opposite the village sign (please note that the Brandy House is not signed). Continue up the lane over the two cattle grids and the site is at the top, about 150 metres from the main road.
If you are approaching from Newtown, leave on the A483 (signed Llandrindod Wells) to Dolfor. Turn left onto the B4355. Go through the village of Felindre and as you leave it, turn up to your right just before the end of speed limit sign (please note that the Brandy House is not signed). Continue up the lane over the two cattle grids and the site is at the top, about 150 metres from the main road.
Local attractions
Boots, bikes and binoculars at the ready – the farm is surrounded by woods, rivers, streams and heathland that’s ripe for days of wandering and wildlife spotting. The 135-mile Glyndwr’s Way trail starts from the site, and there are fab views to be had from Beacon Hill (15 minutes’ drive), a 6,000-acre nature reserve where the eagle-eyed may be able to spot peregrine falcons.
No luck on the animal sightings? Perhaps you’ll have more luck at the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhayader or the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre in Kington (if you can’t spot animals there, something’s gone quite wrong). Both are around 40 minutes away.
Golf courses, horse riding and clay pigeon shooting are all within half an hour if you’re after more alfresco activity; Presteigne and the spa town of Llandrindod Wells are roughly the same distance if you fancy town times. For a dose of house and garden envy, try Whimble Gardens (half an hour), The Hall At Abbey-Cwm-Hir (35 minutes), Gregynog Hall (35 minutes) or the mighty medieval Powis Castle (45 minutes).
