  • Simple Pembrokeshire pop-up campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Tenby
  • Wales Coast Path five minutes’ walk; Penally beach 40 minutes
  • Back-to-basics pitches; farm shop within five minutes’ walk
When it’s time for a back-to-basics, off-grid camping adventure in the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, pack up the tent and all your gear and head for Giltar Grove Camping. Part of a farm with sea views, this family-friendly pop-up site is particularly handy for hikers ‘doing’ the Wales Coast Path, as it’s only five minutes’ walk away. Basic facilities available on site include a toilet of the portable variety, wash basin and drinking-water tap on the level camping field. Please note – that means hot water and electricity are not available. Bonuses, however, include easy access off the main road through a farm gate, and parking is allowed next to your tent on the grass pitches. If you’ve packed the barbecue and are keen to get down to some alfresco grilling, pick up provisions in Tenby supermarkets (10 minutes’ drive). Alternatively, there’s a farm shop and café within five minutes’ walk, as well as a couple of pubs in Penally (a few minutes’ drive) for the days when you just don’t feel like cooking. Filming of the Doctor Who TV series took place in the adjacent field in early 2023.

Liked: Quiet and simple. Toilet was better than expected

Disliked: Toilet could do with a light and water tap could do with better drainage.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Even though this field is by a road, it’s super peaceful. The toilet is really clean and had extra bits that made it a bit easier with a toddler such as antibacterial wipes. They were a godsend with no shower! The owner was helpful when we called to say we had arrived and the views are beautiful, especially early morning and evening.

Disliked: Nothing, this is a basic campsite, what you see is what you get and it’s lovely if you like a wilder camp.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site is basic and the listing is totally honest in this regards. It has a tap and a toilet. The toilet is described on the listing as a portaloo, when in fact it is far better than this. A great welcome from Andrew and advice on where to shop and eat etc was provided. Andrew has great plans for the development of this site and I'm sure it will go from strength to strength. Although some road noise, the fantastic views along the nearby Coastal path more than makes up for this. I would return again and I plan to.

Disliked: Road noise (although I was there for Ironman event which was the cause of the extra traffic).

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch

Liked: It is a basic, honest site, exactly what we saw in the pictures. We enjoyed watching the birds and wildlife in the fields around. We met the owner, the site is new we were among the first to use the site, he was interested in our feedback. He is thinking of putting a footpath across the field to join with the coast path. this could be a good idea but there is a path 100 yards along the road. The entrance may need improving with more use, and another toilet if the site was full. We enjoyed our stay there

Local attractions

Several beaches are within walking distance of the campsite, including the dune-backed, crescent-shaped Penally beach (40 minutes’ walk), or you can turn west along the Wales Coast Path (five minutes) to the sand-and-shingle cove at Lydstep Haven (15 minutes). From there, just carry on walking; after 40 minutes, Skrinkle Haven beach, encircled by steep cliffs, will hove into view. Turn east for views over to the Cistercian monastery on Caldey Island as you stroll, and you can be in the historic walled town of Tenby in about an hour. There are three sandy beaches on which to plonk yourselves down, as well as a fishing harbour and medieval castle to nose around, and colourful waterfront cottages to admire. If the kids are demanding a treat, you may like to let them be animal keepers for the day at Manor Wildlife Park (five minutes). Younger offspring can run amok on the dinosaur trail at Dinosaur Park (10 minutes) or whizz around the go-kart track and wear themselves out zorbing on the pool. There’s more family fun to be had on the fairground rides at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (15 minutes), where there are also big cats in spacious enclosures, penguins frolicking in their pool and cuddly ponies at the petting farm.
