  • Convenient site in a sports field on the northern edge of St Davids
  • 1.7 miles from Whitesands Bay; 10 minutes' drive from the Blue Lagoon
  • A short walk to pubs, shops and the cathedral; food and drink on site
Is Britain's smallest city on your bucket list? If not, then it should be. Get set for spectacular sunsets over Whitesands Bay, tourism at the cathedral and peering down into the emerald waters of Porthclais Harbour – it's all easily walkable from Clwb Camping, a convenient site in a sports field with a rugby pitch and skate park on the northern edge of town. Clwb Camping prides itself on its no-fuss approach to camping: a big green field, fresh air and basic facilities like toilets and basic rugby club showers leave you plenty of scope to choose the kind of stay you want. Fancy chilled evenings in by the campfire? Not a problem here. Bringing your dog along? Four-legged friends are very welcome to join. From action-packed surf weekends to peacefully pottering around St Davids pilgrimage spots, this site is right in the middle of it all. The site is set within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, so it's also close to lots of other scenic spots: top picks include the gorgeous Blue Lagoon (10 minutes' drive), Marloes Sands (45 minutes) and Skomer Island (45 minutes' drive, then a short ferry crossing). Sightseeing is hungry work, so you may be pleased to hear that upon your return to base you'll have access to both the on-site kitchen and bar's tasty offerings and St Davids' best restaurants, pubs, cafés and food shops a short walk away. Live evening entertainment is organised at weekends and sometimes during the week (speak to site staff for more details).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Didn’t like anything about this pitch

Disliked: This is a tiny campsite, now the use of shower toilets is a rugby club which is fine, but we wasn’t aware their was going to be a game on the pitch right next to where pitched up. And 100s of people standing around us which was very uncomfortable. On the last night I was spoken to very rudely inside the bar by a member of staff. Over something so small that could of been dealt with reasonably. Which it wasn’t I was taken with a very bad tone. I will never visit this place again I don’t recommend it to anybody. The showering facilities were being used by the rugby players etc the shower head was completely broken in the one only private shower available. Was not as described or expected

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was close to the centre of St Davids & was easy to walk to the town / city centre. Good price (£20 for 1 night) and the owner was ok about us changing the date of our stay because of the weather forecast & responded quickly to my phone message. Flat site & soft ground for tent pegs! Bar & food available on site with friendly staff.

Disliked: Beyond the rugby club opening hours there is only one toilet for the campsite. The toilet cubicle also contains the shower and there is no lock on the door - the facility is for all genders so this could be a bit unnerving for the faint hearted! As we were only there for one night it was doable.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: location and club house catering options - as awlays excellent

Disliked: no one on site until afternoons for queries/help; tent damage and had to leave two days early but no one around to seek help or inform them. shower, wash up and toilet facilities - had to be an early rise or a long wait for ony of it due to only one mixed gender toilet for over 20 on site.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: It's quite basic but that is reflected in the price, which is very reasonable. Kids loved the freedom of being able to play in the next door skate park. It's a very small site, so we could very easily keep an eye on them Use of the rugby club bar, and food offerings was lovely. Staff are friendly and very helpful.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Cheap campsite and in a great location Good if you have your own facilities Bar next to the campsite

Disliked: Facilities are the bare minimum, often no toilet roles in the one toilet we had access to for a while camping field. The same toilet is in the room with the single shower and so you are often waiting a long time to go to the toilet if people are showering. There is also a shower facility room (open communal) but this was often shut and we didn't have access to it- the same with the toilets. There are no washing up facilities- only a single cold tap without a nozzle and it sprays everywhere

Liked: The camping was exactly what we expected after reading the reviews. This is a leased rugby club, which is utilising it’s outside space to create more income. The facilities are basic, they are sports changing facilities, but they do the job. One of the main selling points of this site, was that it was within easy walking distance of St David’s, so no need to take the car. There were 2 big events at the club either side of our stay, a pirates day and a carnival (it was bank holiday) but the Sunday night we were there, the club house was very quiet. It has a nice bar and food is available, although we ate in St David’s during our visit.

Disliked: No lock on the single use shower/w.c., although they did have an occupied/vacant sign you could slide across. Also had to advise staff that there was no toilet paper or hand towels in there when we arrived but this was quickly remedied. Some of the facilities could do with a little TLC. The washing up area, which looked like a temporary arrangement, was switched off at the water mains supply as the polyethylene pipe connection was leaking. We worked out you had to switch the stop tap back on to get water (which was cold) and only one of the sinks worked. Obviously you then had to turn the stop tap off again after finishing your washing up. Camping is a good extra income for them (I believe for only 1 month?) but I feel that they could put a little more effort into looking after the shower/toilet facilities that they are providing to get themselves better reviews, as negative comments about them do seem to be a running theme.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very close to St David`s Cathedral, supermarket and the Pubs. I believe it took as 10 minutes to walk to the Cathedral. The facilities were clean and showers were nice and hot.

Disliked: Could do with few more toilets. There are unisex toilets and showers, which is not a problem, however, you have walk through the changing room to go to the toilet, therefore the changing room doors were open at all times, so there was no privacy there.

Liked: Bar on site and great live music and wood fired pizza. Fabulous range of local beers. We will definitely be back again

Disliked: Not able to lock the toilet door or have a shower with a locked door (you use the rugby clubs changing rooms that have communal shower behind shower curtains)

Local attractions

Days in Saint Davids (or Tyddewi, if you want to use its local name) are full of potential for sightseeing – within a two-mile radius there's the 12th-century cathedral, the remains of the Cadw-managed Bishop's Palace and the pretty green-tinged waters of Porthclais Harbour, plus Dr Beynon's Bug Farm for the kids. It's also worth remembering that this westerly point of Wales gets some of the best sunsets in all of Britain, so keep a good few evenings free for watching the colours light up the coastline… Offshore day trips are up next – you could stick to the St Davids Peninsula and take a boat trip out to spot dolphins and porpoises gambolling around Grassholm (book tickets in the city centre), make the trip down to Skomer by ferry from Martin's Haven (45 minutes) or drive down to Tenby (an hour) for jaunts to Caldey Island. And for bucket and spade days on the beach? Whitesands Bay (five minutes) and Porthselau (10 minutes) are close by, while for a change of scene there's Marloes Sands (45 minutes), a sandy beach bordered by a nature reserve and deer park.
