  • Secluded site in a Pembrokeshire valley
  • Two miles from Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo
  • 10 minutes' drive from Saundersfoot beach
Set in wooded grounds around a derelict 16th-century mill, Melin Mabes is a peaceful and eco-friendly countryside retreat that's a starting point for adventures of all kinds. It's also small, fenced and gated. The friendly owners are a mine of information on the local area, and can provide guides to the many local paths and trails. There are gentle, riverside ambles close to the site, and walkers are also well placed to join up with Pembrokeshire's classic routes like the Golden Road, Miners' Walk and the Landsker Borderlands Trail. The famed Pembrokeshire coast is a 10-minute drive away, while hailed surfing beaches Newgale, Broadhaven and Whitesands Bay can be reached within three-quarters of an hour. Award-winning harbour town Tenby, half an hour away, has three wide beaches and a ruined castle to explore. Steeped in more recent history, Picton Castle and Pembroke Castle are less than half an hour by car, and host regular events. Please note that the site is a very quiet one and has a strict 'no noise after 10pm' policy, to avoid disturbing surrounding wildlife. It's eco friendly and encourages recycling, embracing 'leave no trace' principles.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch (adults only)

Liked: Lovely peaceful site in a natural setting. Our hosts were very helpful on our arrival. The toilet/shower block was very clean, well equipped & warm. The directions to the site were perfect.

Disliked: The site was fairly waterlogged due the the high rainfall over the last few months, meaning it was difficult to park our caravan on the hard standing without driving onto the grass.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch (adults only)

Liked: A lovely little site that was well kept and far enough away from the road to be quiet. Toilet / shower block was immaculate and the shower was plenty warm enough. The pitches are surrounded by hedges and trees which provide shelter without spoiling the view. Electric hook up available which is metered so you only pay for what you use. Well situated for local tourist attractions, Tenby, Folly Farm, Oakwood. The town of Narbeth also offers local shopping and is just a short drive away. Will definitely stay at this site again.

Route directions

Please do not use satnav. It will take you down single track lane only suited to tractors. From Carmarthen, head for St Clears, then Tenby. At the Kilgetty roundabout, follow brown signs for Folly Farm. Drive past Folly Farm on your left for exactly 1 mile. Turn right under 13ft height restriction railway bridge before the village of Templeton. Look out for the mini windmills on the back of the Give Way sign. Please do not call at Mabes Mill House on the right, but park at the gate further on and ring the bell on the gate or call at the static caravan on the left.

Local attractions

The area is big on family attractions: Folly Farm, two miles away, has fairground rides and a world-class zoo, with lions, penguins, a rhino reserve and daily feeding sessions. A less cuddly, but fascinating experience is on offer at Dr Beynon's Bug Farm, well worth a forty minute drive, and not just for the opportunity to eat a bug burger. If you should find there's energy left to burn, then Heatherton World of Activities, 10 miles from the site, lets you pack in archery, go-karting, a treetop zipwire, paintballing, with much of its activities under cover in case the weather should try and spoil the fun. It won't. With a world-renowned coastline 10 minutes drive away, watersports are also in abundance. In Tenby you can hire motorboats and kayaks, or take a high-speed ride on bananas and doughnuts (the inflatable kind). You can catch your supper (no guarantees) on a mackerel fishing trip, and through the summer months, take the boat out to Caldey Island; this 20-minute trip gives you brilliant views of the coastline there and back. On the island, take a gentle circular stroll around, and visit the abbey, where the monks make and sell perfume, chocolate and shortbread. If you'd like to spend a bit longer on the water, boats sail from Haverfordwest (40 minutes' drive) to the smaller isles of Grassholm, Skokholm and Skomer, protected reserves teeming with gannets and puffins (even the odd passing dolphin).
