Overlooking Porthsele beach

General

  • Family-run site situated on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Direct access to Porthsele beach; a mile from Whitesands
  • On-site coffee hut open daily and pizza served in school holidays

Fancy a stay on a family-run farm… with direct access to a beach below? Make your way to Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site, a 96-acre working farm overlooking Porthsele beach on the Pembrokeshire coast. The site is on the most western tip of Pembrokeshire, with views of St Georges Channel connecting the Irish and Celtic seas.

You'll be in good company with a stay here: generations of the same family have been running the site since the mid-1950s, a holiday spot for guests who return year after year – some with their kids and grandkids now in tow. This place is just the ticket for outdoor adventures too, as it's set directly above Porthsele beach (with private vehicle access so you can cart all your kit along with you).

The sea and bay are safe for swimming and kayaking, and there are plenty of rockpools to explore at low tide. If you haven’t got your fill of sea breeze, surfing beach Whitesands is a one-mile walk along the coastal path or, if you’re feeling adventurous, a half-mile swim or kayak from Porthsele.

Sorting supplies is easy at the farm too: a site shop is on hand with camping and food supplies, wetsuits and logs for beach fires, and a coffee hut opens every day. This is also the spot for dinner with a view – pizzas are served above the beach on certain days during school holidays.

Was a lovely site with stunning views and a lovely little beach at the bottom of the hill. The bathrooms were prettily done with a lower sink area for the little ones.

    Disliked:

Given no information unless you asked! Paid extra for the facilities, in particular the pizza bar at night, went to order around 6pm to be told its fully booked till 10pm, we had checked in that morning a heads up to book would have been helpful! Also the bar opened at 6pm we went to get drinks at half 8 and all shut!

From the manager...

Thanks for your review, and we're glad you liked the campsite!

On arrival, each party is given a welcome pack which explains all about the site, in particular, our policies regarding Covid-19. Should you need any extra information, well, just ask! The alternative is giving long-winded verbal or written explanations to each arrival about every aspect of the site, which you may have preferred, but we tend to trust people to ask if they need anything!

The campsite 'facilities' are included... but if you've been to a campsite with free pizza, we want to know where that is! Pencarnan Pizzas is a privately run venture, and on every menu and sign says to preorder by 5pm, as they are very, very popular. In St Davids in general during August and a pandemic, if you ain't preordering, you ain't getting!

The bar is also run independently of the site in the evenings. Ben opens up at 6pm, after a day on the site, 7 nights a week, and stays open as long as there are people around and buying beer, which tends to be until about 8/9ish! Sorry that you missed him.

Maybe head back to the place with the free pizza next time, we'll see you there! :)

The view of the beach and surrounding areas as well as the showers and toilet facilities that were kept in an extremely clean state throughout the weekend.

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike...the electrical connections are based on a 3 pin plug (not a caravan connection)....it's worth being prepared for this.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review, we're glad you enjoyed your stay.

You booked a 3amp tent or campervan pitch, and so the plug sockets are 3 pins for extension leads, that we have adaptors for if needed for a campervan. Touring caravans and motorhomes usually book onto 16amp hookups, which have the connection it sounds like you needed.

Location was excellent with superb views and nice and close to the beach

    Disliked:

site is very windy at times but this is obviously due to it's location.
Site said they had wifi on the site but the only place it could be used was sat right outside the shop
One member of staff had particularly poor customer service skills

From the manager...

Thanks for your review. We're glad that you enjoyed the location, and recognise that with a clifftop campsite and all the pluses that brings, it also means that the wind does blow at times!

We don't claim to have site-wide Wifi, that would be quite something in Westest Wales! But the Wifi is available on the decking and courtyard outside reception if needed.

We're intrigued as to who the grumpy family member was... and can only apologise if you caught one of us in a bad moment!

Local attractions

This is heaven for beach buffs: Porthsele and Whitesands beaches are both within walking distance of Pencarnan. At Porthsele, take your pick from kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding from its sandy shore; if fishing's more your bag you can fish for mackerel, pollock and seabass from the beach and from certain points on the cliff around Pencarnan's land.

There are also a few marked climbing spots around the cliffs on the land and some good entry points for coasteering or a coastal swim back to Porthsele beach… followed back at base with a sunset beach fire or barbecue to end the day. The famed surfing centre of Whitesands, a mile away on the coast path from Pencarnan, has a café, deckchairs and wetsuit hire, plus lifeguards in the summer months.

Heading south, St Justinian’s (under a mile away along the coast path) is home to RNLI St Davids Lifeboat Station and a departure point for boat trips around, onto and beyond Ramsey Island to spy seals, seabirds, porpoises, whales, dolphins and sharks. Make time too for a trip to the tiny city of St Davids, to browse its shops and galleries and take a look at sixth-century St Davids Cathedral.
