Llys-Y-Frân Meadow Campsite: Views over the meadow field

General

  • Dog-friendly West Wales site 300 metres from the Llys-y-Frân Reservoir
  • A 15-minute drive to Preseli Hills; half an hour to the coast
  • Campfires allowed; watersports and cycling tracks on the lake nearby

Heading to Pembrokeshire in hunt of bays, Iron Age villages and streets lined with Georgian houses? Perhaps a peaceful place to touch down in a meadow, just 300 metres from the Llys y Frân Country Park & Reservoir? If you’d like to roll out of bed and get stuck into watersports or end your day with a wander along the lakeside, the dog-friendly family farm site at Llys-Y-Frân Meadow Campsite is a peaceful spot to lay your head down in West Wales, just outside the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

Sailing, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing or open water swimming… with Llys-y-Frân Reservoir five minutes’ stroll away from the site, watersports can certainly be on the cards. Or, if you’d rather keep on dry land, the lake has a splendid seven-mile walk and 14 kilometres of bicycle tracks (including pump bike tracks).

Back at base, you may want to set up a campfire, look at the stars or listen out for the wildlife around the site. With plenty of space in the meadow, children have room to stretch their legs or splash around in the stream (and well-behaved dogs on leads can join them, too).

Tell the kids to keep an eye out for farmer Nigel on his rounds. Hosts Rachel and Nigel are always happy to point out cows and sheep grazing in the pastures or help you map out your way to Maenclochog (five minutes’ drive), the local traditional Welsh village with a small food shop, cosy café and village pub.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

A technical error meant that I was inadvertently able to book the Dandelion Wishes bell tent just after the campsite had closed for the season. Instead of cancelling and refunding our booking the owner Rachael went out of her way to accommodate us, cleaned and prepped an empty campsite, came to check everything was okay when we got there and gave us a plethora of ideas for the best places to check out in the area. Absolutely exceptional customer service.
The campsite is amazing for kids with a private play park and football pitch. All facilities are clean, well kept and well stocked

The bell tent was also clean, well kept and well stocked and the mattress was like climbing into a cloud. An easy 5 star's. Don't hesitate to book

Thanks so much, it was so lovely to meet you all. I'm glad we could accommodate you at such short notice. You really were the perfect family to end our season! Hope to see you next season.

What a wonderful Campsite. Wonderful Rachel was extremely helpful and very generous with her attention. The campsite is organised in a very calm and relaxed way. We used fully furnished glamping bell tent which was fabulous as Rachel thought through every aspect of a glamping stay. The tent was beautifully decorated and very comfortable for all our needs. The whole camping site was beautifully looked after by the owners and the guests.

Beautiful campsite with lovely facilities. The touches such as the honesty shop, we’re really cute and endearing. They have a little park consisting of a rope swing and slide the kids loved them both. We had keen footballers who enjoyed playing on the pitch with all the other children who were camping.
Friday night was pizza night, Rachel and her family made home made delicious pizzas on site.
Great family atmosphere and really friendly hosts. The toilets shower and sink areas were absolutely spotless!!
We will be back next year for sure

Loved the site, very close to Llys y Fan, the play area for children is fantastic. The hosts Rachel and Nigel were lovely and welcoming! The facilities were good and very clean, It was helpful having things to help wash up and a separate area for cleaning teeth etc. Lovely sized pitch with lots of room and a good choice. Lovely for a bit of stargazing in the evening. The firepit kept us toasty. We will definitely be back and recommend to friends and family.

    Disliked:

There was a blocked toilet for a large proportion of the last evenings stay and the next day. Had the site been busy this would have been a problem, that said, we didn't alert the hosts to it, I guess being the end of the season (in the last week) it wasn't noticed. It didn't impact our wonderful stay, just something to be aware of. Only one other thing to note is the showers were a little cool on a windy day for me! Its not a major problem just an observation as you can't adjust the temperature.

From the manager...

Hi I am sorry to hear the toilet blocked on the last evening, like you said I only found it to be blocked during my morning cleaning. When I did my evening checks, everything was fine. If no-one alerts me to any problems, I am unable to solve them, I always try my upmost to be as helpful and quick responsive as possible.

So glad you liked our new facilities and you had an enjoyable stay. We love a firepit in the evening too! See you soon :)

We stayed here for just one night. The owner was very kind and helpful even though we were quite late to check in. A big plus was that the day of our arrival was pizza night. Yum!

The site itself is very child friendly. All the kids seemed to be having such a good time in the playing area.

Facilities were super clean and very neat looking.

From the manager...

I'm glad you liked the site and the cleanliness of it, especially over a busy bank holiday weekend.

We pride ourselves in being very child friendly and try to cater for a variety of ages. Our site has lovely reviews from families with children who enjoy the site and also the surrounding location, as it offers lots of outdoor adventure activities for families.

Sorry to hear the flies bothered you, this is not something I have ever noticed after the hours I have spent on site.

Brilliant location, just a very short walk to Llys y Fran. Very clean and rustic facilities and a small play area and ball game area - perfect for the kids to burn off their energy. Also a great area for star gazing if the skies are clear! The welcome pack of Welsh cakes was a really nice touch.

    Disliked:

Perhaps could do with some extra showers and toilets as occasionally there was a bit of a wait, although appreciate the site was pretty much fully booked as it was bank holiday weekend!

Thank you, you had a lovely weekend for star gazing. It was certainly a very full bank holiday weekend, great to welcome so many visitors :)

Local attractions

What to sniff out first? A hike through the Preseli Hills (15 minutes’ drive) to see the Castell Henllys Iron Age Village (25 minutes) or the National Trust’s Cilgerran Castle (35 minutes)?

Perhaps the coast might be the first to call your attention. If so, the sandy stretch at Newgale beach (half an hour) is fit for surfing and kitesurfing. There are pastel-coloured Georgian houses in the harbour at Tenby (40 minutes), the dunes and church at Broad Haven beach (half an hour), the dragonflies at Lilly Ponds (50 minutes) or a splendid bay along the coastal path at Barafundle Bay Beach (50 minutes).

Up north, Cardigan (half an hour) and Newport (25 minutes) have more compact beaches. And to the west, history fans will want to scout out St Davids (40 minutes) for its cathedral… or perhaps Pembrokeshire’s castles, such as Pembroke Castle (40 minutes) and Carew Castle and Tidal Mill (half an hour).

Narberth (20 minutes) has all the scents of a market town… browse cheeses, meats and wines, sample artisan ice cream or sip on gin and craft ales. There are independent shops selling antiques, jewellery and homeware if you fancy a shopping spree.

  • Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (13.6 miles)
  • Pembroke Castle (14.9 miles)
