Roomy pitches

General

  • Peaceful, scenic and secluded site in pretty woodland valley
  • A 30-minute drive from Oakwood Theme Park and 35 from Cardigan
  • Pembrokeshire Coast National Park within a 10-minute drive

In need of a break from the same old drudgery? Let your hair down at Digs in the Wig, a family-friendly Pembrokeshire site 25 minutes’ drive from Cardigan.

The site is nicely secluded, set back from the road in a woodland valley and crisscrossed with foxglove-lined paths. It’s peaceful too… numbers are kept deliberately small so that pitches are far enough apart to be private (but close enough to allow for socialising, if meeting the neighbours appeals). Pitches have private eco toilets too, so no accidental midnight rendezvous...

It’s an adventurers' paradise around here as well, if days in nature beckon: the edge of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is less than 10 minutes from base for biking and hiking, horse riding, birdwatching and stargazing, and sandy beaches are within easy reach at Cwm yr Eglwys and Newport (both about half an hour away).

Fresh coastal breezes and lengthy rambles along the Wales Coast Path (which can be joined half an hour from the site) may get appetites fired up – handily there are firepits dotted around the site for toasty outdoor eats, and self-contained spaces for cooking and eating give some indoor options too.

Please note

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Facilities/activities including additional fire wood are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

It is a real luxury to have your own kitchen area complete with stove and patio furniture set. You also have a large container with wood for a fire with an axe for chopping and your own water tap on pitch. Our pitch (pitch no.1) was very private and surrounded by trees with a little path to the car.
The owner Howell is very welcoming and is only a text away if you should need anything.

Self-contained pitches amongst trees, and very peaceful04/08/2020

Very peaceful with just 5 pitches. From the tent we looked out into a lovely panorama of ash and sycamore trees. Having our own eco loo and water supply on the pitch was a luxury, and the gas shower worked fine. Morning and evening we heard and saw a buzzard overhead. Howell was very friendly and helpful. There’s a woodland walk and a big field to walk without leaving the site. The location is central to the whole area, and especially close to the Preseli Hills.

Great location in the middle of nowhere. Quiet, well run and accommodating. Owner was exceptionally helpful and went out of his way to make the stay a pleasure, he even helped charge a car battery when we experienced car issues and offered a dry barn to carry out repairs.
Covered kitchen area was a blessing as it rained most days. Showers were basic but clean and hot!!

    Disliked:

Although clean and functional, the compost toilets were at best bearable, it rained every day so we had minimal fly issues but I can’t imagine how many flies they attract during a hot spell.

From the manager...

Hi Anthony

Thanks for the review. Was a pleasure to have you guys and it was no problem to help out with the car problems.

In the hot summers we actually have no fly problems with the eco loos. It's strange to think but as long as there is plenty of sawdust there are no flies. We also have an indoor toilet block up and running soon which you may have preferred.

It was a shame about the weather but your welcome back when the sun comes out again.

Regards

Howell

Everything.... it was so lovely to have a pitch where it felt like just your family camping. We had our own compost loo, an area to cook, complete with own tap and a camping stove, gas and kettle provided and an area for a real campfire. We loved the peace and quiet and feeling of almost wild camping. The owners can't do enough to make your stay comfortable, providing wood for the fire and icepacks if needed.
A real find of a site.

Wow, what a beautiful campsite. Definitely one of the best we’ve been to. Only 5 pitches all set in your own secluded area. A massive 100 acres of land surrounding you with a outstanding woodland walk. Very peaceful site with only the sounds of birds, Farm animals, and the rustling of wind. Your own Compost toilet and water point is set on your pitch. With a added bonus of a gazebo set up with a table and chairs, cooker, KFS, cooling box, etc. Open fires are allowed with the owners continuously supplying you wood to keep you warm or cook your dinner, you certainly feel back to nature. The site also offers hot showers. The friendliness and hospitality of the owners is simply outstanding. We spent 7 days hare and have rebooked for next year. Dog friendly family site, Highly recommended campsite.

Local attractions

The only downside to this site is how close it is to Oakwood Theme Park and Folly Farm. Rest assured: once the kids find out it’s just half an hour’s drive to both, that’ll be entire hols behind the wheel ferrying them to and fro for hair-raising rides at the former and zoo visits and a fairground at the latter…

If they’re miraculously convinced to try something else, there’s plenty to choose from. Make the most of proximity to beaches and spectacular Welsh coastline by heading out for some sea kayaking, surfing, windsurfing or sailing, all within about half an hour of base, or opt for more controlled sea-like environments with a pitstop at Pembrokeshire Wake Park or Blue Lagoon waterpark, both within 25 minutes.

There’s history aplenty too, starting with Scolton Manor 15 minutes away. Stately pile aficionados will find lots to learn in the Victorian era gaff, while green-fingered guests will get a particular buzz from wandering the walled garden and visiting the Pembrokeshire Beekeeping Centre. (Don’t forget to pick up a jar of Scolton Manor honey as a wee souvenir).

Pembroke Castle, Melin Tregwynt mill and Castell Henllys are each worth a visit too (all within 45 minutes), but more thrill-seeking types might gravitate more towards Wood Park Off-Road, where clambering into a 4x4 and battering along is the order of the day.
