  • Secluded site bordered by woodland and a stream
  • Wildlife country in the midst of the Ceredigion countryside
  • Three miles from Lampeter and seven from the Dolaucothi Gold Mines
Everyone, even the cynical, should have a little romance in their lives. Especially if it includes a scenic setting with easy access to local pubs (a holiday extra that thaws the icy hearts of the cynical even more than blazing sunsets). Teifi Meadows should warm the battery of your camera as well as the cockles of your heart: this is wildlife country – look out for red kites overhead – in the midst of the greenery of the Ceredigion countryside, and close to the walks, dolphin spotting and beaches of the Ceredigion coast and Cardigan Bay. National Trust sites, River Teifi fishing and canoeing, mountain pony trekking, Roman gold mines and blooming great gardens are in the area too: ask your hosts Jane and Julian for their top sightseeing tips. For supper supplies to sort alfresco eats and stargazing, the village of Llanfair Clydogau is about a mile away and has a well-stocked licensed shop as well as a post office selling rod licences if you’re plotting to fish on the Teifi. Lampeter, about three miles away, has plenty of food shops, independent stores and a farmers’ market, and the pub at Cellan, also three miles away, serves food and Sunday lunches. Sunday pub lunches are romantic too…

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Quiet location with the pleasant sound of the stream nearby, owners were so friendly and pleasant, relaxed check in and out time, clean facilities

Disliked: The pitch was on an incline and was uneven, meaning that when we stepped in parts of the tent, the ground had puddles that seeped through the groundsheet. I’m not marking down the campsite for this by any means - the pitch was incredibly muddy.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The pitch was perfect for our large tent and also a gazebo. The owners was so friendly and welcoming. Shower block was clean and well kept. Their ice-cream is a definite must try.

Disliked: Didn’t have a washer. Would have been lovely to have one due to how muddy the field got when wet. Cars got stuck and children fell over, so many of us was hand washing our cloths. So this option would have been amazing. Other than that it was perfect.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The owner seemed friendly, the few times we saw him. was always toilet paper and hand soap in toilets, always hot water in tap and showers. drove to the seaside town new quay which was about 45 min drive away and was lovely.

Disliked: the toilets and showers were filthy for the duration of our stay. There was a play area which was very tired looking and playhouse with broken windows etc and was covered in litter. the field turned into a mud bath, although the unseasonal weather for august couldn't be helped, it would help to have a gravel path around the outside of the field so you don't have to squelch through mud to the toilets. the toilet and shower block was made of wooden boards so the floor couldn't be cleaned. there were teenagers and children playing and congregating right outside the window of the bathroom where your meant to shower, giving you no privacy, there should be at least a blind fitted. when we arrived the owners dog was running around, not on a lead and without the owner, there was two bits of dog mess on our pitch which we had to clean up before we pitched our tent. there didn't seem to be any walks to local pubs or shops that we could do with children and a dog... any walks involved a walk down a narrow country road. there was a field the owner told us to walk around but the grass was so long we couldn't really use it. although the owner couldn't help the behaviour of other guests , there was a group of about 3 other family's who's children /teenagers were running riot around the campsite in the pitch black from early evening until past 11pm at night, screaming right outside our tent and repeatedly tripping over our tents guide ropes and rolling in mud and grass by our tent, we repeatedly shouted for them to keep the noise down and be careful when tripping over our guide ropes but the behaviour continued. The same group were all pitched around the toilet block and seemed to use it as a hang out, charging their phones there and playing about in the toilet, making it uncomfortable to visit. such a shame. pitches are also sloped , so if you need a flat pitch , this isnt for you.

Local attractions

Everyone, even the unimaginative, will find something to do in Ceredigion and the Teifi Meadows surroundings, although the choice of what’s on offer may overwhelm dithery types… Historians of old should start off at the National Trust’s Dolaucothi Gold Mines, less than seven miles away, the only Roman mines discovered so far in Britain and a deeply groovy place for underground tours. Also from the National Trust, 12th-century Dinefwr Castle and its 18th-century landscaped park lies high on a hill above the River Tywi near Llandeilo; and Llanerchaeron house, estate and walled gardens gives a glimpse into how the Welsh gentry lived. The Trust manages a couple of beaches hereabouts, magnificent Mwnt, regarded as one of the best hidden beaches in Europe, and Penbryn, which James Bond fans might recognise from scenes in Die Another Day. Both are on the Ceredigion Coast Path, so don your boots for romantic walks: it’s 11.7 miles to Cardigan from Mwnt, and a much more strollable 1.7 miles from Penbryn to Llangrannog. The colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is a 6.5-mile walk from New Quay and a day in both is thoroughly recommended: Aberaeron for another spectacular beach, and New Quay for dolphin-spotting boat trips, day-long fishing trips and the only bee farm in Wales. Further along the coast in Aberystwyth, take the Vale of Rheidol Railway up to the smashing falls of Devil's Bridge.
