General

  • Bothy in a hidden garden bordered by woodland and a stream
  • Wildlife country in the midst of the Ceredigion countryside
  • Three miles from Lampeter and seven from the Dolaucothi Gold Mines

Everyone, even the cynical, should have a little romance in their lives. Especially if it includes free breakfast (a holiday extra that we have found thaws the icy hearts of the cynical even more than blazing sunsets).

If you possess a cynic as a life partner, direct them to this listing, show them the snap of the Teifi Meadows bothy shepherd’s hut, and tell them that by hook or by crook, you must holiday here. And yes, there is free breakfast. And yes, use the term ‘brownie points’ – or ‘doghouse’ – if you have to.

If you prefer going away armed with tent, tourer or motorhome, Teifi Meadows should also warm the cockles of your heart, and the battery of your camera. This is wildlife country – look out for red kites overhead – in the midst of the greenery of the Ceredigion countryside, and close to the walks, dolphin-spotting and beaches of the Ceredigion coast and Cardigan Bay.

National Trust sites, River Teifi fishing and canoeing, mountain pony trekking, Roman gold mines and blooming great gardens are in the area too: ask your hosts Jane and Julian for their top sightseeing tips.

The bothy at Teifi Meadows is in a hidden garden bordered by woodland and a stream, with loo and shower facilities – fluffy towels included – in the Ty Bach (little house) alongside. Linen, fridge, kitchen utensils, a gas barbecue and indoor woodburning stove are all included.

And yes again, there’s a free breakfast: bothy guests get a breakfast hamper on arrival with free range eggs, scones or cake, and home-produced bacon and sausages. Get the other half to cook it in the morn: it’ll be romantic.

For supper supplies to sort alfresco eats and stargazing, the village of Llanfair Clydogau is about a mile away and has a well-stocked licensed shop as well as a post office selling rod licences if you’re plotting to fish on the Teifi.

Lampeter, about three miles away, has plenty of food shops, independent stores and a farmers’ market, and the pub at Cellan, also three miles away, serves food and Sunday lunches. Sunday pub lunches are romantic too.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

    Awesome location.
Lovely owners, hamper on arrival was excellent and very tasty. Cooking facilities more than enough.
Lots to do around local area - owners also own ice cream shop Zukos in Aberaeron.
Fire bowl and kindling were lovely too.

Lovely quite site with lot's of open space for the children to play.
Owner was very welcoming but didn't bother us at all, was there if needed.
    Clean toilet and shower block.
    Sinks to wash up.
Place to light BBQ if wanted without damaging the grass.
Lovely added touch of a swing made out of a tire ( yes I did have a go and yes the owner drove passed laughing :)
no phone reception or wifi - yup we had to talk to each other for a few days, that didn't turn out too bad.
The weather was also on our side, we only had rain Sunday, that was an added bonus with the typical British weather.
Not far from Lampiter where you can stock up on supplies if needed.
Camping is what you make it and as long as the facilities are clean and presentable then the rest is up to you to make your own fun, if you can do this then this is the site for you.

we had such a relaxing time I have already booked to go back twice this month before the children go back to school, I had originally booked another two camping trips to different sites but kids rule and they said no lets come back here.

    Disliked:

Waking up to find that a mouse had chewed through my bedroom area, and was brazen enough to be sat under the ground sheet staring at me. after a little scream and half hour in the car contemplating what to do and with a little encouragement off my 12 yr old daughter, I decided to cut the tent up with a scissors and take it to the waste disposal area, this is obviously no fault of the owner and just a funny little tale to tell. The moral of the story is buy a decent tent then things like this wont happen. the mouse lived happily ever after and I did live to tell the tale! Mice are one of my biggest fears in life so this really did freak me out. as stated above I am going back to Teifi Meadows again next week and am staying for longer.

From Lampeter take the B4343 towards Cellan, travelling exactly 3 miles from the turning. Teifi Meadows campsite is located on the right-hand side of the road, flanked by two brick and stone gateposts.

If travelling from Tregaron you will pass through the villages of Llandewi Brefi and Llanfair Clydogau. The campsite driveway will be on your left, approximately half a mile from the village. Teifi Meadows is flanked by two brick and stone gateposts.

The bothy parking space is accessed from the drive on the right-hand side. Please call at the house for the key.

Local attractions

Everyone, even the unimaginative, will find something to do in Ceredigion and the Teifi Meadows surroundings, although the choice of what’s on offer may overwhelm dithery types…

Historians of old should start off at the National Trust’s Dolaucothi Gold Mines less than seven miles from bothy or pitch, the only Roman mines discovered so far in Britain and a deeply groovy place for underground tours.

Also from the National Trust, twelfth century Dinefwr Castle and its eighteenth century landscaped park lies high on a hill above the River Tywi near Llandeilo; and Llanerchaeron house, estate and walled gardens gives a glimpse into how the Welsh gentry lived in the eighteenth century.

The Trust manages a couple of beaches hereabouts, magnificent Mynt, regarded as one of the best hidden beaches in Europe, and Penbryn, which James Bond fans might recognise from scenes in Die Another Day.

Both are on the Ceredigion Coast Path, so don your boots for romantic walks: it’s 11.7 miles to Cardigan from Mynt, and a much more strollable 1.7 miles from Penbryn to Llangrannog.

The colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is a 6.5 mile walk from New Quay and we thoroughly recommend a day in both: Aberaeron for another spectacular beach, and New Quay for dolphin-spotting boat trips, day-long fishing trips and the only bee farm in Wales.

Further along the coast in Aberystwyth, take the Vale of Rheidol Railway up to the smashing falls of Devil's Bridge.

Inland – we did say there was a lot to see – the landscape of Elan Valley (‘the Welsh Lake District’) is filled with stunning scenery to see by bike along the Elan Valley Trail; hire your own wheels at the visitor centre.

A tad too sedate? Go mountain biking instead at Bwlch Nant yr Arian or Brechfa Forest, both home to many tumultuous trails.
