Teifi Meadows: Nearby Sarn Helen

General

  • Secluded site bordered by woodland and a stream
  • Wildlife country in the midst of the Ceredigion countryside
  • Three miles from Lampeter and seven from the Dolaucothi Gold Mines

Everyone, even the cynical, should have a little romance in their lives. Especially if it includes a scenic setting with easy access to local pubs (a holiday extra that thaws the icy hearts of the cynical even more than blazing sunsets).

Teifi Meadows should warm the battery of your camera as well as the cockles of your heart: this is wildlife country – look out for red kites overhead – in the midst of the greenery of the Ceredigion countryside, and close to the walks, dolphin spotting and beaches of the Ceredigion coast and Cardigan Bay.

National Trust sites, River Teifi fishing and canoeing, mountain pony trekking, Roman gold mines and blooming great gardens are in the area too: ask your hosts Jane and Julian for their top sightseeing tips.

For supper supplies to sort alfresco eats and stargazing, the village of Llanfair Clydogau is about a mile away and has a well-stocked licensed shop as well as a post office selling rod licences if you’re plotting to fish on the Teifi.

Lampeter, about three miles away, has plenty of food shops, independent stores and a farmers’ market, and the pub at Cellan, also three miles away, serves food and Sunday lunches. Sunday pub lunches are romantic too…

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Owing to government regulations, groups of 6 or more people are not permitted.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Minimum spacing of 8 metres between pitches.

We stayed in the Bothy, a Shepherd's hut which is situated in a little private garden, between the campsite and the owner's house/yard. It is an ideal setting, which provides privacy but doesn't feel isolated! We loved the simplicity of the hut's interior and appreciated the small sink/tap and kettle which was perfect for early morning or late night cups of tea. The log burner was very cosy and efficient and a highlight for us. The main kitchen area is outside but covered which gives a lovely sense of space and freedom and lends itself to al fresco living even if the weather is wet. It may be trickier in high winds, but we were pretty blessed with the weather. Toilet and shower were also separate, but so close, it's the ideal set up. Lots of thoughtful extras such as fresh tulips and a welcome basket containing quality bacon, sausages, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, bread, jam, butter and welsh cakes and plenty of firewood was available. We loved it.

This is a family friendly, no frills site about 10 minutes drive from Lampeter. It is a sloping site and not all the pitches are level. This was our second visit (it’s handy for visiting relatives nearby) and it has been improved since our first visit three years ago. The pitches are now marked out by hedge planting and there are lots of electric hook ups. The field is bordered by a stream on three sides and there are two rope swings that go over the stream. There are also swings, a seesaw and a large area in the middle of the pitches that is perfect for football, rounders, frisbee etc. The site is also dog friendly.
The shower block is good and there are three or four washing up sinks.
Previous reviews have mentioned noisy farm dogs at 5am, but we didn’t hear these.
If you like a site with neat, serried rows of campers, a shop and laundry facilities this isn’t the place for you! But if you like rural sites, with fire pits provided, where on a clear night you can sit and try to name the constellations, this is a great site.
There are shops at Lampeter (Co-op and Sainsbury’s, lots of cafes).
A good base to explore from.

Conveniently located for Lampeter and the coastal towns of Newquay, Aberaeron, Aberystwyth and Cardigan. A great site for nature lovers and campers who like the peace and quiet of the countryside. We saw Red Kites and buzzards whilst the gentle burbling of the stream lulled us to sleep at night. The facilities were kept clean and the showers hot and powerful by most campsite standards. The owners are friendly and helpful.

Amazing family camping holiday, there were other familys there for our children to play with which made it all the better for our children. There was also a small swing park on site which all the kids loved.

The shower facilities were some of the best we have come across over the years, well maintained and clean. To top it off andrex bog roll!

The staff were nice and friendly. Also the farm yard puppies that kept escaping were very nice and my wife and children wanted to take them home.

    Disliked:

The only downside was the pitch was on a slight incline.

The owners were really polite, approachable and friendly.
The size and position of the pitch- the pitch was secluded behind some trees with a foot bridge as a point of access and a path at the other end. The pitch was large, fitted our 6person tent and an awning without any hustle and still had room to spare. As there were other pitches available, we were offered a choice to swap or keep the allocated pitch.
The size of the site is limited to 23 pitches - once fully booked. There was no traffic other than the visitors.
The electric hook up was useful we were able to keep our devices charged through the stay.
There is a small playground for the children - a tyre swing was the most fun for the kids.
Kids were able to walk and play by themselves around the site.
There was no wifi or good phone reception on site - rather enjoyed a break from the phone ‘pinging’ all the time.
Fire pit was supplied and we were able to purchase logs on site.
There was a mountain forestry - ideal for a walk- 10 mins drive from site.
New Quay and Aberaenon beaches located around a 35 min drive away from the site. Lampeter town around 3 miles away.
Site located in a valley and surrounded by spectacular views of the mountains.

    Disliked:

One loud group had a party until early hours in the morning, but the owners had dealt with the noise reports first thing in the morning.

Local attractions

Everyone, even the unimaginative, will find something to do in Ceredigion and the Teifi Meadows surroundings, although the choice of what’s on offer may overwhelm dithery types…

Historians of old should start off at the National Trust’s Dolaucothi Gold Mines, less than seven miles away, the only Roman mines discovered so far in Britain and a deeply groovy place for underground tours.

Also from the National Trust, 12th-century Dinefwr Castle and its 18th-century landscaped park lies high on a hill above the River Tywi near Llandeilo; and Llanerchaeron house, estate and walled gardens gives a glimpse into how the Welsh gentry lived.

The Trust manages a couple of beaches hereabouts, magnificent Mwnt, regarded as one of the best hidden beaches in Europe, and Penbryn, which James Bond fans might recognise from scenes in Die Another Day. Both are on the Ceredigion Coast Path, so don your boots for romantic walks: it’s 11.7 miles to Cardigan from Mwnt, and a much more strollable 1.7 miles from Penbryn to Llangrannog.

The colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is a 6.5-mile walk from New Quay and a day in both is thoroughly recommended: Aberaeron for another spectacular beach, and New Quay for dolphin-spotting boat trips, day-long fishing trips and the only bee farm in Wales. Further along the coast in Aberystwyth, take the Vale of Rheidol Railway up to the smashing falls of Devil's Bridge.
