Llandovery Caravan and Camping Park: Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

General

  • Quiet countryside park next to Llandovery RFC rugby union club
  • Just outside the Brecon Beacons and a 10-minute walk into Llandovery
  • Clubhouse open for food and drink Thursday to Sunday evenings

If your fondness for rugby is matched only by your devotion to dawdling, Llandovery Caravan and Camping Park could be the Carmarthenshire site for you. Sitting just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park – for walks in Welsh wilderness – this place is attached to Llandovery RFC rugby union club.

Even if you’re not a fan of the game, the site makes a brill base for tackling the treks in south Wales’ most scenic area. It’s also niftily located – the grounds are about 10 minutes’ stroll via a flat route into Llandovery town for pubs, shops, a public pool, a theatre and a heritage centre with tourist information on the Brecon Beacons and the surrounding area.

Info collected, venture into the national park for watery hikes around Llyn y Fan Fach, home to the legend of the Lady of the Lake (40 minutes’ drive), stopping by the Red Kite Feeding Station (20 minutes) on the way to see these winged creatures that have made a welcome comeback after almost becoming extinct.

Closer to home, the River Tywi – the longest river inside Wales and a top spot for salmon fishing – is a few minutes’ walk away, while further afield are historical spots like the Talley Abbey ruins (25 minutes) and Carreg Cennen Castle (35 minutes). Places of a cultural nature are in Llandeilo, like the National Trust’s Dinefwr Park and Castle and the Newton House art museum and gallery (both around 15 minutes’ drive).

Pick up a pint and some food at the rugby club (open between Thursday evenings and Sunday evenings) while the kids race around the play area. Other amenities on site include showers and toilets, disabled facilities, free wifi, chemical disposal, a launderette and a washing-up area. An on-site shop selling basics like long-life milk, tea, coffee, sweets and drinks is also available.

It was a really lovely pitch, toilets and showers were clean and tidy and extra bonus like books and games to borrow, or an iron etc to use. Staff were very helpful and friendly, very easy going site with lots of friendly sited caravan pitches. Rugby club was also welcoming and an ideal place for a drink at the end of the day.

Friendly owners. WiFi. Microwave. Refunded us which was lovely as we didn't end up staying.

    Disliked:

We didn't actually end up staying here as we didn't know that there was rugby tournaments on all day and they was training right where we was suppose to put our tent (which was impossible) At one point a boy nearly run into my car so we decided we was not staying. I think we should of been told once we booked as we had no idea they had rugby on. I also think pictures look different to the actual site and didn't realise how close the rugby pitch was to the site. It was a nightmare to find. We went down every single street numerous times to try find the place definitely needs more sign posts to direct you. I don't know weather I would come back here I feel like that experience might have put me off.

Friendly staff, grass was well kept. Little play area was good. Dog exercise area was excellent, paws up from the dog:)

    Disliked:

Not a dislike really, just confused a little.... The rugby club was right alongside, but I was not sure if we were allowed in? Felt awkward.
Our fault for parking under the trees, won't do that again... Had things falling on us all night as it was really windy.

Wales is quite the adventure hub – if you want to get in on some of the action, try the Raven mountain biking trail at Brechfa Forest 35 minutes’ drive away from the park.

The hides at the latter centre are up near stunning Llyn Brianne Dam & Reservoir (25 minutes’ drive from the site): follow up sightings of red kites et al with a trip to see the water rushing down the spillway when the reservoir is full.
