General

  • Small and family-run site on a traditional working farm
  • At the foot of the Preseli Mountains six miles from Newport
  • Café, nature trail and indoor and outdoor play areas

All ages – and the dog – will be kept delightedly busy on fab little Dyfed Shire Horse Farm at the foot of the Preseli Mountains on a site run by the Lewis family since 1849.

As you might have gathered from the site name, shire horses live here – meeting them and visiting the farm for free is included in your pitch price. The farm is also part of a small visitor attraction, where you can take your pick from horse-drawn carriage rides, tractor rides, bird of prey displays in summer, and stacks to do for small sorts including a roomy play area adjacent to the site, and a spacious and well-equipped indoor soft play area open daily in the summer holidays. A one-kilometre and dog-friendly nature trail runs through woodland and meadow.

Dyfed Shire is on a working farm in a secluded and safe paddock in west Wales, six miles from the coastal path and beaches of Newport and Poppit Sands. It has a farm café (next to the outdoor play area) serving hot and cold food, a well-stocked shop and ice pack freezing. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed.

Toilets and showers are a short walk from the camping field, and include a parent and baby washroom.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 20 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Friendly, easy going, great activities (nature walks, shire horses, owls), location, views, sociability, flexible pitching, enthusiastic and pleasant owner Mark visited twice a day to check all was OK and it was! Dogs really, really welcome, even if they do occasionally bark at a fox in the night (and really, really not my dogs Mr.Mrs Bell Tent!)

    Disliked:

Really, nothing, everything we want from a camping weekend and just a bit more... yes the weather was just perfect!

From the manager...

Thank you for your great campsite review Tony!

It was a pleasure to welcome you both and the dogs to our family farm during your stay with us.

It's great that you enjoyed our relaxed atmosphere on the campsite and enjoyed the activities on the timetable that are all inclusive in with the camping cost.

We hope you all come and stay with us again in the near future!

Nice little camp site ideal for families 29/08/2017

It was quite calm and peaceful. Ponies and horses around 😊. There is some nice space for kids to play and families to chill. It's not a big space so it's nice like that

    Disliked:

Where I pitched my tent was quite flat with not a lot of grass.

From the manager...

Your campsite review bemuses us slightly.

Whilst we're pleased that you enjoyed the quiet and peaceful surroundings that are synonymous with the Preseli Hills here in north Pembrokeshire, we can not understand why having a flat pitch was a problem. Would you prefer a pitch on the slope?!

Also, whilst appreciating the space for families and children and the animals that we have around on the farm, you wouldn't recommended us to your friends and yet would visit us again yourself?!

Certainly one of the quirkier responses that we have received!

Excellent range of free activities for children including multiple play areas and activities with animals. All safe and enclosed. Lots of other young children too.
Pitches are well spaced and position choice was wide.
Family run farm, lovely and helpful people.

    Disliked:

Toilet and wash facilities are very basic and not particularly hygienic. No mirrors and constantly messy floors due to muddy boots. A few floor mats, mirrors and a freshen up would not go amis.

From the manager...

Thank you for your campsite review Becki, we're pleased that you appreciated the wide-range of activities and space offered to children on our farm.

We plan to install mirrors into our toilets and your comment on floor mats is well made. However, whilst we clean the toilets twice daily, their regular use in the peak season means that at times they are constantly in use and at times, the floors can in between cleaning, become rather wet.

We're pleased that you appreciated the flexibility that we offer when it comes to pitch choice and also the space that we seek to offer between pitches so that everyone can enjoy the personal space on the campsite that they require.

We have had a fabulous week. Unspoilt views from our tent.
We all loved the farm, particularly our daughters who become very involved with farm life. Tears when we left the shires! The play facilities were excellent to. Our daughters are 13 and 11 they found so much to occupy them all day.

The knowledge and history of this family farm was so interesting. Mark passed by our tent every morning to see we were all ok. Very approachable staff to who were always friendly and happy to answer any questions.

Farm is situated within easy access to nearby beaches, but the majority of time we were in and around the farm and campsite.

Dogs were welcome on the farm and there was a large designated area for dogs to run off the leads.
A relaxing and enjoyable place we will be going again.

    Disliked:

Would have liked showers and toilets in the camp field, but that isn't really a dislike more of a preference. There are portaloos on the campsite which we generally only used overnight.

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely campsite review Jean!

Your family clearly made the most of the opportunity to involve yourselves on our farm which was inclusive with the cost of the camping.

It's great that you appreciate the passion that we have for the history and tradition that goes with an old family story on the farm that dates back to 1849 and that our location offers superb opportunities to explore our beautiful locality!

We would unfortunately require planning permission to build a toilet block on the campsite but believe that the facilities that we do provide, within a stone's throw of the campsite as they are, are acceptable.

We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future!

Lovely welcome from the owner and checked everything was ok everyday, which I found very nice. He was friendly and helpful. Nice parks for the kids to play and plenty of room to run around. Nice little soft play and ride on toys. The animals were a added bonus to our stay, the kids were very happy. Would definitely visit again.

    Disliked:

Only dislike was the wait for toilet in the morning, when people were using the showers.

From the manager...

Thank you for your positive campsite review Kim, we're really pleased that you will visit us again.

There were some pinch points during the summer when there were queues for the showers although less in total than there were in 2016.

Nevertheless, we have plans to expand our amenities ready for 2018 to hopefully reduce the pressure in our peak season.

Local attractions

This is a stunning part of west Wales, with beaches and coastal walks, castles, ancient forts and family attractions all easy to get to.

Less than a mile from the farm in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the Iron Age archaeological site of Castell Henllys with its Celtic roundhouses and regular events. Even the most iron-willed history resister should be stoked with a day here, where kids can hear ancient tales of the Pembrokeshire people, train as warriors, take the history trail or take part in some of the 80+ activities arranged here each year.

Beach days are a must around here too: if you feel up for it, you can hike six miles from the farm to reach the coastal path at Newport, part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Path running for 186 miles from Amroth to St. Dogmaels around this part of Wales shoreline.

Family days at Folly Farm, Pembroke Castle, Tenby and Caldey Island are all within 30 miles of the farm.
