General

  • Small and family-run site on a traditional working farm
  • At the foot of the Preseli Mountains six miles from Newport
  • Café, nature trail and indoor and outdoor play areas

All ages – and the dog – will be kept delightedly busy on fab little Dyfed Shire Horse Farm at the foot of the Preseli Mountains on a site run by the Lewis family since 1849.

As you might have gathered from the site name, shire horses live here – meeting them and visiting the farm for free is included in your pitch price. The farm is also part of a small visitor attraction, where you can take your pick from horse-drawn carriage rides, tractor rides, bird of prey displays in summer, and stacks to do for small sorts including a roomy play area adjacent to the site, and a spacious and well-equipped indoor soft play area open daily in the summer holidays. A one-kilometre and dog-friendly nature trail runs through woodland and meadow.

Dyfed Shire is on a working farm in a secluded and safe paddock in west Wales, six miles from the coastal path and beaches of Newport and Poppit Sands. It has a farm café (next to the outdoor play area) serving hot and cold food, a well-stocked shop and ice pack freezing. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed.

Toilets and showers are a short walk from the camping field, and include a parent and baby washroom.

Really lovely place, everyone is so friendly and they all know the area and the farm really well. I have four children who are 15,13 and 6 year old twins and they were all amused my older two where helping out on the farm and the 13 year old practically lived with the horses. Great relaxing site for me and my husband and the perfect holiday to end the season.

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike but the bathrooms need updating and a few extra showers for the campers however this is not a criticism and I would go back. They were functional and cleaned everyday so not too much of an issue at all, the water was always hot and only had to wait once and not for very long at all.

From the manager...

Thank you for your campsite review Michelle, we're really pleased that you all enjoyed your stay with us.

You make a wholly valid point with regards our washing facilities. They are functional and they are cleaned everyday as you state but with an ever increasing number of campers visiting our campsite, we do have plans to expand on the these facilities ready for the 2019 season.

Thank you for taking the time to write a lovely review of your time with us on our campsite Becky!

It was lovely to meet you both during your stay with us earlier this month and it's great that you found us helpful and approachable! It's also lovely to read of your enjoyment at hearing us speak our native language - that was really heart-warming!

We hope you enjoyed the next stop on your camping holiday which if memory serves, was Snowdonia.

I read reviews before booking and was a bit sceptical as they were all so positive. I'm pleased to say they were all right. I cannot praise this place enough, there's so much for the kids to do it almost seems cruel taking them off site to go on day trips. Mark and the staff have a real passion for what they do and this shines through in the talks and activities they put on throughout the day. Once the farm is closed to visitors there's 2 parks, a sand barn, trampolines and crazy golf available, all included in the price and we could just open the tent and let the kids go off and play, safe in the knowledge they were safe. They loved it, we loved it and I would highly recommend it.

Thank you for your fantastic review Luke!

We're really pleased that we managed to turn your healthy scepticism on its head during your family stay with us!

It's clear from your review and photos that the children thoroughly enjoyed their stay and made the most of everything that we offer on the farm!

We hope that you all visit us again in the near future!

A fantastic little campsite. Loved the access to the farm through the day and playground area in the evening. Very safe. Plenty of space around the field. Family run and a very family friendly atmosphere. Friendly owners and the cafe is very reasonably priced. Excellent homemade cakes!

    Disliked:

The shower and toilet facilities are very basic.

From the manager...

Thank you for your campsite review Jamie, it was lovely to see you both again this year after your visit in 2017!

We're pleased that you made the most of all that we have to offer and that you enjoyed our Caffi Celt's homemade delicacies as well!

We accept that our shower and toilet facilities are on the basic side but we do ensure that they are serviced and kept clean on a daily basis. We do have plans in the pipeline to make an upgrade which would improve the campsite experience so we hope that we may be in a position for you to see this for yourself when you return again in 2019!

Local attractions

This is a stunning part of west Wales, with beaches and coastal walks, castles, ancient forts and family attractions all easy to get to.

Less than a mile from the farm in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the Iron Age archaeological site of Castell Henllys with its Celtic roundhouses and regular events. Even the most iron-willed history resister should be stoked with a day here, where kids can hear ancient tales of the Pembrokeshire people, train as warriors, take the history trail or take part in some of the 80+ activities arranged here each year.

Beach days are a must around here too: if you feel up for it, you can hike six miles from the farm to reach the coastal path at Newport, part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Path running for 186 miles from Amroth to St. Dogmaels around this part of Wales shoreline.

Family days at Folly Farm, Pembroke Castle, Tenby and Caldey Island are all within 30 miles of the farm.
