General

  • Small and family-run site on a traditional working farm
  • At the foot of the Preseli Mountains six miles from Newport
  • Café, nature trail and indoor and outdoor play areas

All ages – and the dog – will be kept delightedly busy on fab little Dyfed Shire Horse Farm at the foot of the Preseli Mountains on a site run by the Lewis family since 1849.

As you might have gathered from the site name, shire horses live here – meeting them and visiting the farm for free is included in your pitch price. The farm is also part of a small visitor attraction, where you can take your pick from horse-drawn carriage rides, tractor rides, bird of prey displays in summer, and stacks to do for small sorts including a roomy play area adjacent to the site, and a spacious and well-equipped indoor soft play area open daily in the summer holidays. A one-kilometre and dog-friendly nature trail runs through woodland and meadow.

Dyfed Shire is on a working farm in a secluded and safe paddock in west Wales, six miles from the coastal path and beaches of Newport and Poppit Sands. It has a farm café (next to the outdoor play area) serving hot and cold food, a well-stocked shop and ice pack freezing. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed.

Toilets and showers are a short walk from the camping field, and include a parent and baby washroom.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Group bookings of 20 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Mark and Huw made our stay very positive. Our girls learnt about animal life on the farm, groomed ponies and stroked Shire horses. I enjoyed their mums cooking and their in-house cake bakers Victoria sponge! From this part of Wales, the night sky is alight with stars.

Lovely place with a great atmosphere. Lots to do here with the different play areas both inside and out. Tour of the farm was great and the horses were beautiful. All of the family were really nice and made this a place we will definitely visit again. We were able to pitch up together as a family in the corner of the field. Shower facilities were good and we were informed they would be getting an upgrade shortly.

Thank you for your lovely review Gemma!

Your family made the most of the space and freedom on the farm and we're delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us!

We have indeed upgraded our facilities since your visit ready for the summer season with plans to extend that provision over the winter ready for 2018!

We look forward to seeing you all again when you next visit!

The friendly family atmosphere really made our stay a treat and admission to the farm attractions being included in the pitch price was great. We could easily have spent a couple of days without leaving the site.

    Disliked:

The facilities could do with a makeover, though the shower was powerful and always hot.

From the manager...

It was lovely to meet you all on your way home to Ireland and we're really pleased that you had an enjoyable stay with us!

We believe we offer great value by giving free entry to our farm attraction to those who stay on our campsite and it's great that you agree!

Yes indeed, the water is indeed hot and since your visit, we have given our facilities a much needed makeover ready for the summer season!

We hope you visit again when you next cross back over to beautiful west Wales!

Can't fault it at all .

Thank you for your lovely review - you can most certainly come again!!

You clearly made the most of the opportunity to meet the various animals on our farm and yes, the donkeys are a particular favourite!!

Your positive comments about the cleanliness of our toilets and showers are appreciated and that view, the Preseli Hills?! It's the best!!!!

We look forward to meeting you again!

Your positive comments for our shower block is also appreciated as we appreciate that it is relatively basic but improvements have been made since your visit ready for the summer season!

We were delighted when you booked to stay for an extra night and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future!

    (1) We liked the site, which is situated at the side of the farm and most pitches are reasonable (take a couple of block levels to be safe) although you probably won't need them on most of the pitches!
    (2) The shire horses who weren't working on the day of our arrival (Wednesday) which we knew about beforehand were really lovely.
    (3) There is a petrol station more or less at the entrance to the farm which we found very handy for any last minute food or clothing items you may have forgotten etc, on the day we were there it closed at (7pm).
    (4) (Joint Shower and M/F toilet) clean but there were only 5 people on the site at this time.
    (5) lastly Hugh the person who I think owns the farm was very nice, helpful and lovely host.

    Disliked:

    (1) I'll mention the showers here too as they do need to be updated and the site needs more of them, especially when it gets really busy, which I'm sure it will, as they do tours of the farm and people staying on site too!!

    (2) They had a cafe on site, but I think due to our late arrival on the day we arrived (Wednesday) they were closed and we left before 10am the next morning we can't comment on how good or bad it is, but it did look clean from what we saw though!

    (3) The site could do with good/better signage as we struggled to find the toilets/showers initially, and as Hugh who was supposed to meet us on our arrival 6pm wasn't there so we waited and eventually 20 minutes later we decided to go and find a pitch and set up before it got too late!!, Hugh later called around and explained he was busy bringing in the hay, which I was totally understandable but it just leaves you wandering around the farm not knowing where anything is, just a minor issue!!) nothing that would put my wife and I off staying there again.

From the manager...

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review and constructive criticism.

We're pleased that you enjoyed our campsite and location and you rightly mentioned the very convenient petrol station which is a mere 5 minute walk away from the campsite and which caters for most urgent requests!

Our amenities have now indeed been updated since your visit ready for the summer season and we have plans to extend that provision with more showers over the winter ready for the 2018 season.

Our cafe generally opens between 10am-6pm on 'open' days. As it happens, your late arrival and early departure meant that you weren't able to experience what is a popular addition to what we have to offer on the farm.

We do our very best to welcome all campers personally on arrival to show them around the farm and the amenities. Indeed, as a rule, we contact all campers in advance of arrival to ensure that we able to do so but on this occasion, you caught us on the hop!! Huw was indeed on the hay when you arrived but I'm glad that he welcomed you not too long after your arrival!

We're pleased that nothing noted would stop you and your wife from visiting again! We hope to see you again soon so that you can experience the cafe at first hand and to witness the improvements made to our amenities!

Mark who runs the farm-very friendly and helpful. He was always very optimistic about the weather!!!
Free entry to farm all the time we were there, including crazy golf.
    Electric hook up worked fine.
Space! Able to park next to tent.
Quiet field, next to field with play ground in- able to see the kids from our tent.
    The price!

    Disliked:

Shower facilities weren't the Hilton but absolutely fine for camping.

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely review Georgina, you clearly made the most of the space and freedom that we offer on our campsite!

The location of the campsite alongside our play areas has been positively commented upon by many families for the very reason that you mention - you can keep an eye on the children from the comfort of your own tent!

We accept that our toilet facilities are a little bit of the basic side so we have upgraded them ready for the summer season with plans to extend that provision during the winter ready for the 2018 season!

Local attractions

This is a stunning part of west Wales, with beaches and coastal walks, castles, ancient forts and family attractions all easy to get to.

Less than a mile from the farm in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the Iron Age archaeological site of Castell Henllys with its Celtic roundhouses and regular events. Even the most iron-willed history resister should be stoked with a day here, where kids can hear ancient tales of the Pembrokeshire people, train as warriors, take the history trail or take part in some of the 80+ activities arranged here each year.

Beach days are a must around here too: if you feel up for it, you can hike six miles from the farm to reach the coastal path at Newport, part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Path running for 186 miles from Amroth to St. Dogmaels around this part of Wales shoreline.

Family days at Folly Farm, Pembroke Castle, Tenby and Caldey Island are all within 30 miles of the farm.
