Great site

General

  • Small family-run site on a working farm, six miles from Newport
  • Free admission to Dyfed Shire Horse Farm
  • Café, nature trail and indoor and outdoor play areas

All ages – and the dog – will be kept delightedly busy on fab little Dyfed Shire Horse Farm at the foot of the Preseli Mountains on a site run by the Lewis family since 1849.

As you might have gathered from the site name, shire horses live here – meeting them and visiting the farm for free is included in your pitch price. The farm is also part of a small visitor attraction, where you can take your pick from horse-drawn carriage rides, tractor rides, bird of prey displays in summer, and stacks to do for small sorts including a roomy play area adjacent to the site, and a spacious and well-equipped indoor soft play area open daily in the summer holidays. A one-kilometre and dog-friendly nature trail runs through woodland and meadow.

Dyfed Shire is on a working farm in a secluded and safe paddock in west Wales, six miles from the coastal path and beaches of Newport and Poppit Sands. It has a farm café (next to the outdoor play area) serving hot and cold food, a well-stocked shop and ice pack freezing. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed.

Toilets and showers are a short walk from the camping field, and include a parent and baby washroom.

Please note

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, customers can amend their dates with the campsite/holiday park free of charge for all stays up to, and including, Monday 31 August 2020.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 20 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Onsite entertainment will not be offered due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Minimum spacing of 4 metres between pitches.

This is a wonderful campsite for children. It's a safe place where they can play in the park, explore, get up close to the nature and the beautiful animals at the farm.
The campsite owner was very friendly and welcoming.

    Disliked:

The only downside for me was the toilet/shower facilities. There is only one shower/toilet and then 2 portaloos in the actual field. It would be the icing on the cake if this campsite had a decent little shower/block.

From the manager...

Thank you for your positive campsite review Sali - we're pleased that you felt the farm to be a safe environment for your children to explore and to be at one with nature.

Planning permission was sought and granted by Pembrokeshire County Council for an extension to our facilities back in March but those plans are currently on hold whilst we wait for the economic outlook to improve in the face of the global pandemic of 2020.

In the meantime, we have upgraded our facilities with new 'hands-free' stainless steel sinks and have refurbished our toilet block. We have also added a new washing-up sink for campers which is a great improvement on what we had previously. We currently have 3 additional portaloos on the campsite for additional coverage.

We hope you visit us again in more 'normal' times!

Wonderful visitor centre, interesting talks, carriage rides etc.

    Disliked:

Shower and toilet facilities need addressing. Too few showers, one situated in a tired old outbuilding.
Porta loos x3. Not checked, restocked t-rolls, sanitizer etc regularly enough. Need checking more frequently do to heavy use and Covid.

From the manager...

Thank you for your positive review Tracey and for the lovely photos! It's great that you all enjoyed your stay and had a warm Welsh welcome to our farm!

In 2020, we have upgraded our facilities with new 'hands-free' stainless steel sinks and have refurbished our toilet block. We have also added a new washing-up sink for campers which is a great improvement on what we had previously.

We now also offer greater handwash and hand sanitizer opportunities than ever before in light of Covid and we request all guests on arrival to adhere to our policies and to avail themselves of the hygienic opportunities offered. We check and re-stock all of our toilets regularly throughout each day.

Planning permission was sought and granted for an extension to our facilities back in March but those plans are currently on hold whilst we wait for the economic outlook to improve in the face of the global pandemic of 2020.

We hope to see you again on the farm and remember to bring the sunshine with you when you do!

The owners and staff were very warm and welcoming. They were obviously very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the animals there. Great views from all the pitches. There's also a nice little nature trail around the outskirts of the farm. We didn't bring kids but there was plenty there to keep children occupied. There was also plenty of hand sanitizer available around the site.

    Disliked:

Not enough showers.. But that's not a problem if you have one in your own caravan.

From the manager...

Thank you for your positive campsite review Rebecca. We're pleased that you had a warm Welsh welcome to our farm!

We're also pleased to see that you noted the additional measures that we have taken to be Covid compliant in these challenging times with greater hand sanitizer and hand wash opportunities for all.

Planning permission was sought and granted for an extension to our facilities back in March but those plans are currently on hold whilst we wait for the economic outlook to improve in the face of the global pandemic of 2020.

Local attractions

This is a stunning part of west Wales, with beaches and coastal walks, castles, ancient forts and family attractions all easy to get to.

Less than a mile from the farm in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the Iron Age archaeological site of Castell Henllys with its Celtic roundhouses and regular events. Even the most iron-willed history resister should be stoked with a day here, where kids can hear ancient tales of the Pembrokeshire people, train as warriors, take the history trail or take part in some of the 80+ activities arranged here each year.

Beach days are a must around here too: if you feel up for it, you can hike six miles from the farm to reach the coastal path at Newport, part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Path running for 186 miles from Amroth to St. Dogmaels around this part of Wales shoreline.

Family days at Folly Farm, Pembroke Castle, Tenby and Caldey Island are all within 30 miles of the farm.
