Overlooking Porthsele beach

General

  • Family-run site situated on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Direct access to Porthsele beach; a mile from Whitesands
  • On-site coffee hut open daily and pizza served in school holidays

Fancy a stay on a family-run farm… with direct access to a beach below? Make your way to Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site, a 96-acre working farm overlooking Porthsele beach on the Pembrokeshire coast. The site is on the most western tip of Pembrokeshire, with views of St Georges Channel connecting the Irish and Celtic seas.

You'll be in good company with a stay here: generations of the same family have been running the site since the mid-1950s, a holiday spot for guests who return year after year – some with their kids and grandkids now in tow. This place is just the ticket for outdoor adventures too, as it's set directly above Porthsele beach (with private vehicle access so you can cart all your kit along with you).

The sea and bay are safe for swimming and kayaking, and there are plenty of rockpools to explore at low tide. If you haven’t got your fill of sea breeze, surfing beach Whitesands is a one-mile walk along the coastal path or, if you’re feeling adventurous, a half-mile swim or kayak from Porthsele.

Sorting supplies is easy at the farm too: a site shop is on hand with camping and food supplies, wetsuits and logs for beach fires, and a coffee hut opens every day. This is also the spot for dinner with a view – pizzas are served above the beach on certain days during school holidays.

    Great location

    Disliked:

We weren’t informed ahead that the electricity points were traditional three pin (UK outdoor garden 10-13A) instead of camping 16A sockets. So we ended up with no electricity though we had paid for it. But we have learnt from our experience and will take adaptors always with us from now on:
We never saw or met anyone from the management on the site during our entire time there.
We arrived at 8.30 pm after a 5hr drive but we’re made to feel that we had done something wrong, though the information provided says that arrivals until 10.00pm are accepted. We were told over the phone to just make our own way in the dark to a field and park anywhere. No details were given regarding hook ups. We searched for them in the dark but we couldn’t use them in the end anyway as we didn’t have adaptors.
The toilets and bathrooms weren’t cleaned during our stay. They were ok. It was out of season, I suppose. The water in the men’s showers was tepid, leaving me shivering.
We liked the site. It is a great place but it might just be that it was out of season, we could done with someone coming out to meet us and helping us with finding our hook ups.
The small details make a huge difference.

Easygoing. Left us to it. Nice and helpful. Beautiful location and access to beach. People running it really friendly and helpful. Towed us out when we got stuck in the mud after heavy downpour. Must be fab in summer when you can make the most of the coastal path and close access to beaches. It’s a working farm so not manicured like some sites. But that’s what camping is all about : )

    Disliked:

No real hard standing and you need it if grounds wet as we got stuck.... bathrooms cold so you need to be hardy. We were out of season though. Would be fine in summer.

Local attractions

This is heaven for beach buffs: Porthsele and Whitesands beaches are both within walking distance of Pencarnan. At Porthsele, take your pick from kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding from its sandy shore; if fishing's more your bag you can fish for mackerel, pollock and seabass from the beach and from certain points on the cliff around Pencarnan's land.

There are also a few marked climbing spots around the cliffs on the land and some good entry points for coasteering or a coastal swim back to Porthsele beach… followed back at base with a sunset beach fire or barbecue to end the day. The famed surfing centre of Whitesands, a mile away on the coast path from Pencarnan, has a café, deckchairs and wetsuit hire, plus lifeguards in the summer months.

Heading south, St Justinian’s (under a mile away along the coast path) is home to RNLI St Davids Lifeboat Station and a departure point for boat trips around, onto and beyond Ramsey Island to spy seals, seabirds, porpoises, whales, dolphins and sharks. Make time too for a trip to the tiny city of St Davids, to browse its shops and galleries and take a look at sixth-century St Davids Cathedral.
