  • Pop-up pitches on a farm with gorgeous Monmouthshire hill views
  • A 20-minute drive to the Forest of Dean, and 25 minutes to Symonds Yat
  • Wild camping with kids’ games and woodland walks
If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see at least one of the amazing sunsets at Red Sky at Night Campsite near Monmouth – but if you don’t, there’s mighty compensation in the shape of the spectacular views from just about everywhere on the site. And of course, on clear nights, the night skies are diamond-bright with stars. This family-run camping field on a livestock farm is managed on very laidback lines. Pitch up wherever you like and feel free to park by your tent. Raised campfires are allowed and you can hire firepits and grills (the owners sell sausages from the farm) and buy kindling. You can bring your dogs too (take them for walks in the adjoining woods) but just be sure to keep them under control around the animals. Kids are certainly carefully looked after here. Read the note left on a tree for mini-campers and join a teddy bear hunt through the woods. Round and about the site, your offspring can entertain themselves on rope swings and a climbing frame or by making dens and following a mini-tractor course across the camping field. There is also a little play area for smaller kids. Wild camping this may be (there’s no electricity on site, please note) but there are two nicely designed compost loos and a fresh water tap. So bring your guitar, light that fire, break out the barbecue and enjoy the chilled vibe.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked The peace and quiet. Even though the site was full there is enough space between the pitches which means it was not loud.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A fantastic night at red sky, such a beautiful location and we had lovely weather which helped. Best compost loos I've experienced cleaner than lots of campsites normal loos. Fantastic that you can hire a firepit and being able to buy fresh eggs from the honest box was great. Would highly recommend to anyone and will be back if we are in the area. Chloe was friendly and easy to contact.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great location for exploring south Wales and Brecon Beacons park. The site has amazing views over green rolling hills and a lot of privacy as the pitches are nicely spaced out.

Our kids loved the swings and the Teddy Bears trail, this easily made it into their favorite campsite.

Chloe checked in on us to ensure we were enjoying the campsite and kindly brought us a fire pit.

We had a great experience even though it rained in one of the days.

If you are in the area, we also recommend a trip on the steam train with Brecon Mountain Railway which all of us enjoyed very much.

Disliked We would recommend the site for the warmer months as the facilities are minimal with no hot water.

It leads to White Castle (10 minutes’ drive), where you can do tours and tastings at the vineyard; Grosmont Castle (15 minutes, stop off at the village pub); and National Trust - Skenfrith Castle (five minutes), where you can cool off with a bit of wild swimming. There’s golf, fishing and horse riding within a 15-minute drive, while the Forest of Dean has lots of woodland walks for the whole family, including the magical Sculpture Trail with glittering stained-glass artworks tucked among the trees. And of course in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (both 20 minutes), you can get out on the river in kayaks, canoes and coracles at Symonds Yat (25 minutes). Any rainy days are taken care of with visits to the indoor Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (20 minutes), a family swim at Monmouth Leisure Centre (15 minutes) or an outing to the cinema in Abergavenny (20 minutes).
