  • Pop-up pitches on a farm with gorgeous Monmouthshire hill views
  • A 20-minute drive to the Forest of Dean, and 25 minutes to Symonds Yat
  • Wild camping with kids’ games and woodland walks
If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see at least one of the amazing sunsets at Red Sky at Night Campsite near Monmouth – but if you don’t, there’s mighty compensation in the shape of the spectacular views from just about everywhere on the site. And of course, on clear nights, the night skies are diamond-bright with stars. This family-run camping field on a livestock farm is managed on very laidback lines. Pitch up wherever you like and feel free to park by your tent. Raised campfires are allowed and you can hire firepits and grills (the owners sell their own eggs, sausages and pork chops) and buy kindling. You can bring your dogs too (take them for walks in the adjoining woods) but just be sure to keep them under control around the animals. Kids are certainly carefully looked after here. Get a fact sheet on arrival and join mini-campers in wildlife hunts through the trees, looking out all the while for buzzards and red kites. Round and about the site, your offspring can entertain themselves on rope swings, making dens and following a mini-tractor course across the camping field. Wild camping this may be (there’s no electricity on site, please note) but there are two nicely designed compost loos and a fresh water tap. So bring your guitar, light that fire, break out the barbecue and enjoy the chilled vibe.

Liked: Lovely, quiet little campsite with fantastic views. Chloe was very helpful, especially when it came to hiring a firepit, something the kids insisted on! We will definitely be back here again.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This is a great location and within easy reach of Monmouth. Facilities on the site are limited and basic to the extense of rough camping. Owners are present through out the day taking care of the toilet Facilities and make a presents at least 3 times a day. Space is great allowing children to explore and roam ....but not wonder out of sight! Great siite with panoramic views across the open countryside.

Disliked: A small investment of wooden buildings and water points would be an advantage......alongside rubbish points. With clever thinking and design the site could still achieve its environmental ethos

Liked: Had a very large pitching area with plenty of flat ground, toilet and little kitchen area was perfect. Chloe and family were very helpful and provided a perfect service even going out of their way to let us borrow some playing cards! Would definitely recommend and would 100% go back to the lovely site and views and red sky at night campsite!

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Lovely wild setting with fantastic view and beautiful wood next door. Feels relaxed and easy going. Fire pits and tripods available for hire and logs for sale.

Disliked: Could do with a decent stand pipe for water as sink tap difficult to use for hose pipe or containers. Quite pricey for field with one compost toilet.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: We loved the amazing views, the pitch sizes are very generous. There is a great play area for children and a find the animal hunt in the woods which our little boy loved. All in all we enjoyed our stay thoroughly.

Local attractions

Hikers can try the Three Castles Walk – it starts right outside the farm gate. It leads to White Castle (10 minutes’ drive), where you can do tours and tastings at the vineyard; Grosmont Castle (15 minutes, stop off at the village pub); and National Trust - Skenfrith Castle (five minutes), where you can cool off with a bit of wild swimming. There’s golf, fishing and horse riding within a 15-minute drive, while the Forest of Dean has lots of woodland walks for the whole family, including the magical Sculpture Trail with glittering stained-glass artworks tucked among the trees. And of course in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (both 20 minutes), you can get out on the river in kayaks, canoes and coracles at Symonds Yat (25 minutes). Any rainy days are taken care of with visits to the indoor Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (20 minutes), a family swim at Monmouth Leisure Centre (15 minutes) or an outing to the cinema in Abergavenny (20 minutes).
