Scenic setting

General

  • Well maintained and scenic setting with spacious pitches
  • On the Offa's Dyke Path on the border of England and Wales
  • Trout fishing in three well-stocked ponds within a minute's walk

Wales? England? Mosey along to this Monmouthshire site for both. Hendre Farmhouse Orchard Campsite is on the border of England and Wales, within easy reach of days out of all sorts in both countries.

It's no more than half an hour's drive to famed attractions in both lands: the Brecon Beacons, Chepstow, the Wye valley and Raglan Castle on the Welsh side, and the Forest of Dean, Tintern Abbey and Hereford on the English. Even closer to home, the farm is on Offa's Dyke Path for those who fancy part – or all – of its 177-mile route along the Welsh/English border; canoeing on the River Wye is within a couple of miles, and the championship course of the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club borders the site.

Hendre Farmhouse Orchard is a peaceful spot overlooking meadows, rivers and hills, and with the River Trothy flowing through the farm meadows. Three well-stocked trout fishing ponds, owned by the site, are within a minute's stroll.

Monmouth is 15 minutes' drive away.

Was happy to find such a picturesque campsite. Simple but functional site. It was cheap too. I read some criticisms from other users but I can only speak positively about my stay. Would recommend to anyone.

Nice quiet site. The owner (I think) is fab drives around a few times a day seeing if you are ok 👍. Clean and tidy with a little park on site also has amazing views.

    Disliked:

Some pitches are on a slope, not enough toilets and showers but apparently they are putting more in soon so that'll be better.

Lovely rural campsite. None of the pitches are too far from the facilities which include 2 toilets, a shower, a family shower room, washing up area, a fridge, a kettle and a toaster.
We stayed over a bank holiday which was exceptionally busy and meant the facilities probably weren’t kept as clean as usual but this wasn’t a major issue.
There are goal posts on the main site which the children loved.
BBQ’s and firepits are available too.
    We enjoyed our stay :)

    Disliked:

Due to the high amount of people on site the electric was very intermittent over night when people started to use it more and more for lights etc.
No phone signal, even to make calls (not sure this was a bad thing though!)

Beautiful views dark sky so we could see lots of stars

    Disliked:

Toilets and showers are in the same block as the washing up area and there was only two shower's and three toilets and they were not very clean. We had to que for a shower or toilet to come available. The electricity kept tripping that wasn't nice when using the toilet at night in the dark. The owners dog was roaming around all the time that wasn't nice when we were trying to eat our meals.the owner was outside the toilet and shower block all the time and made me feel uncomfortable a couple of times I didn't bother having a shower or I waited for him to go away. They ran out of fire wood.

Nice site in a tranquil area with electric hookup overlooking ponds. 27/08/2018

Nice site, with electric hookup. Facilities were clean. Owners were very friendly on arrival and welcoming. Shared kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge provided by owners. Nice area good for walks or cycling.

    Disliked:

Big family or friends pitched up in separate tents next to each other with a dozen kids, drinking all day, not watching the kids, drinking and talking all night to 1 am then back and forth to the toilet all night, shame they ruined what would have been an otherwise nice site and stay. It was a bit weird with the toilets positioned right next to the washing up area and people brushing teeth next to you.

Local attractions

Get your walking boots ready, because Hendre's setting next to the Sugar Loaf and Black Mountain ranges is among the most scenic hiking country in Wales.

Recommended walks include the Three Castles, a 19-mile route linking the castles of Skenfrith, Grosmont and White, following hills and woods and among views of the Black Mountains, the Welsh Marches and the Forest of Dean. Also to be tackled of course is Offa's Dyke Path, on its southern Wales section around the Wye valley and the eastern side of the Brecon Beacons National Park: just follow the acorns...

You could also try the Celtic Trail, on a route across Wales rather than up and down it like Offa's Dyke, and running west from Chepstow to the county of Pembrokeshire, or the 100 miles of the Beacons Way for a challenging day or two of hikes. In the Wye valley and the Vale of Usk, take the Wye Valley Walk on part of its 136-mile run from Chepstow to Rhayder via Tintern Abbey and Monmouth and eventually Rhayder.

For a shorter local stroll, try the Caerleon Heritage Trail, the Lower Wye Ramble or the Priory Grove Circular Trail.

Must see

  • Caldicot Castle & Country Park (3.0 miles)

  • Goodrich Castle (8.3 miles)
