The site

  • Well-maintained and scenic setting with spacious pitches
  • On the Offa's Dyke Path on the border of England and Wales
  • A 15-min drive from Monmouth; Wye canoeing within a couple of miles
Wales? England? Mosey along to this Monmouthshire site for both. Hendre Farmhouse Orchard Campsite is on the border of England and Wales, within easy reach of days out of all sorts in both countries. It's no more than half an hour's drive to famed attractions in both lands: the Brecon Beacons, Chepstow, the Wye valley and Raglan Castle on the Welsh side, and the Forest of Dean, Tintern Abbey and Hereford on the English. Even closer to home, the farm is on Offa's Dyke Path for those who fancy part – or all – of its 177-mile route along the Welsh/English border; canoeing on the River Wye is within a couple of miles, and the championship course of the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club borders the site. Hendre Farmhouse Orchard is a peaceful spot overlooking meadows, rivers and hills, and with the River Trothy flowing through the farm meadows. Monmouth is 15 minutes' drive away.

Liked Recycling, clean, 10,000s of tiny frogs (in some places)

Disliked Rubbish left in firepits

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we're so glad you enjoyed the site and all the baby frogs! Regarding the firepit, there of course should not have been rubbish in there at any point and I'm very sorry the camper before you left it that way. They are of course not bins (and you know how many actual bins we have all around the site!), and we trust people with them and to use them respectfully so this is very disappointing to us. I hope it did not spoil things too much for you. In future if this happens again please let someone at reception know so we can deal with it at the time.

Lovely staff, facilities were cleaned daily.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked This is the first time we have camped not for a festival so I really appreciated the hot water and sinks for dishes! There was a kettle and microwave but we used brought out own things for hot drinks but a great option. We had loads of space and it was such a quiet scenic campsite! There was a little park too which was nice for my youngest. The firepit and picnic table was great too meaning we didn’t have to take ours!

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked Beautiful site with excellent facilities and walking nearby

Disliked Only one shower available and always seemed to have a clogged drain

From the manager: Thank you so much for your review, we're happy you enjoyed your stay with us. We have 3 showers on site, I'm sorry that you missed this! I have taken note of this and will make sure we do our best to make the rooms more obvious for everyone, we really appreciate the feedback.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked The views were stunning. The location was well kept and scenic.

Disliked The receptionist was unpleasant. Sticking bold red notices telling not to inplug microwave and kettle. The showers were dirty above eyelevel cobwebs and dead insects the same at least levels. The microwave was dirty and unhygienic. The facilities had a feeling of being made with secondhand materials and old skips. the 4 days we were there no cleaning was undertaken .

From the manager: Before I address this person directly I'm going to say here for anyone reading this that the reviews directly before this overlapped with this person's stay- this is the only negative review.

How 'the female' who you only spoke to once upon checking in and had a pleasant interaction with ruined your trip I don't know... this seems incredibly strange an accusation, and despite the fact that you suddenly became rude to said staff member she remained polite, smiled and said good morning regardless. Any signs put up on site are put there by the owner-perhaps the sign that simply says 'do not unplug, thank you' was put there because you unplugged the fridge that belongs to the campsite which alerted us that a reminder to not unplug it may be necessary.

Cleaning is undertaken several times a day, as you can see in the surrounding reviews the people who stayed on site along with yourself recognised this. We do get cobwebs yes, because it is an outside shelter. You were off site all day each day you were here and came back to clean toilets, surfaces, floors and emptied bins so of course cleaning was undertaken. The microwave is cleaned daily, if you or a fellow camper did not wipe it down after it was used that is not the fault of the cleaning staff.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked Great campsite, we were lucky and only had a few other campers there at the same time as us which meant we had lots of space. The fire pits and picnic benches are great as are the toaster, kettle, microwave and fridge. The toilets / shower are basic but that’s to be expected with the price of the pitch. If you want a site where you can listen to the birds and enjoy countryside views then this is perfect for you.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely welcome from the campsite manager when we arrived. We were lucky to have a choice of several pitches, had a fire pit and a picnic table as most did. The large pond in the middle of the field (fenced) gave the site a lovely feel and focal point. Very peaceful place. We walked both directions of the Offa’s Dyke path over the weekend and it was lovely to leave the van where it was and explore on foot. Would recommend!

Disliked Four toilets in total - perhaps when the site was full it might not feel enough but we never had to wait / queue. Facilities were spotless.

Overall it was a lovely stay very quiet.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The quietness and the openness of the camping area especially with a fire pit that comes with your pitch.

Disliked The personal amenities could do with an update.

Local attractions

Get your walking boots ready, because Hendre's setting next to the Sugar Loaf and Black Mountain ranges is among the most scenic hiking country in Wales. Recommended walks include the Three Castles, a 19-mile route linking Skenfrith, Grosmont and White castles, following hills and woods and among views of the Black Mountains, the Welsh Marches and the Forest of Dean. Also to be tackled of course is Offa's Dyke Path, on its southern Wales section around the Wye valley and the eastern side of the Brecon Beacons National Park: just follow the acorns… You could also try the Celtic Trail, on a route across Wales rather than up and down it like Offa's Dyke, and running west from Chepstow to the county of Pembrokeshire, or the 100 miles of the Beacons Way for a challenging day or two of hikes. In the Wye valley and the Vale of Usk, take the Wye Valley Walk on part of its 136-mile run from Chepstow to Rhayader via Tintern Abbey and Monmouth. For a shorter local stroll, try the Caerleon Heritage Trail, the Lower Wye Ramble or the Priory Grove Circular Trail.
