Bryn Bettws Lodge: View of the camping field

General

  • Relaxed campsite opposite mountain bike trails in Afan Forest Park
  • Beach 25 minutes' drive away; 45 minutes to Gower Peninsula
  • Café/bar, restaurant and burger shack on site; barbecues permitted

You’ll be in prime position for all sorts of south Wales outdoor activities while staying at Bryn Bettws Lodge – this gorgeous Glamorgan spot is inside Afan Forest Park, so it’s surrounded by mature trees and green scenery.

Mountain bikers in particular will be in their element here – the site is just opposite the forest park’s mountain bike trails, which have about 100 kilometres of twisting, turning track to follow, and it’s not far to Bike Park Wales for more chances to hone your skills on two wheels. There’s plenty to keep walkers busy too, whether you ramble along the forest park’s trails or head a little further north to the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Mixing a bit of seaside time should be straightforward too – it’ll take you about 25 minutes to drive to the nearest beach at Aberavon, or 45 minutes to get to the Mumbles and the Gower Peninsula (another excellent place for a walk – this time on the Wales Coast Path).

When it comes to feeding up for these outings, you’ve got a choice of starting up a barbecue or campfire on site (pick up supplies 15 minutes’ drive away in Port Talbot) or stopping by at the site’s café/bar, which serves up breakfast and lunch, and has plenty of outdoor seating to help you continue enjoying the views. There’s also a burger shack that opens for burgers, bacon rolls and the like at weekends, and you can book in for evening meals at the restaurant.

Showers, toilets and drinking water taps are all provided at this site; it’s a relaxed place in general but you’ll be asked to stick to quiet time rules after 10pm to keep things peaceful for everyone.

Please note

A charge of £2.00 applies for the use of the shower.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.

Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The location. The view. Friendly staff. The rural element to it. The cafe/bar. Has lots and lots of potential.

    Disliked:

It wasn’t quite how we expected. Although good value for money. It did appear a little unfinished. Whilst I understand why the toilets have locks on the outside of them, it did make me nervous about being locked in. I also found the showers a little out of the way.

Lovely scenic views, very quite & spacious which we loved as our children were able to play football & frisbee (there was a local charity festival on during our stay which meant it was busier but we loved hearing the music & enjoyed the nice atmosphere). Clean toilets, seemed quite new. Amazing walks & cycle tracks. My children loved exploring & playing. Nearby to amenities. We really enjoyed our stay! Thank you very much!

    Disliked:

Not a massive issue as we’re we’re able to flannel wash in our van but we were not able to shower due to no water being available as it’s from a spring. Sadly the park is being built so kids could play on it but it will be lovely when’s it’s done, also the restaurant was not open but again we ate at the van so wasn’t a huge issue for us.

If arriving by caravan, do not follow sat nav up to Penrhys Farm. Instead, continue on Tonmawr Road and you will see the signs on the right for Bryn Bettws and Afan Bike Park. Follow the forestry road for just over a mile and Bryn Bettws is on the left hand side at the end of the forestry road.

Local attractions

If you need a little bit of relaxing time to recover from all the activities at the forest park, how about a trip to the beach? It’ll take you about 25 minutes to drive to Aberavon beach or around 40 minutes to Ogmore-by-Sea, where you can also stop by at the castle. That said, there’s still scope for activity down at the coast: Ogmore has horse riding outings, while Rest Bay (half an hour’s drive) is well known for surfing and bodyboarding.

Keen to keep the adventures coming? How about ziplining from a former colliery tower at Zip World Tower (35 minutes), tackling the trails of Bike Park Wales (45 minutes) or walking behind a curtain of water on the Four Waterfalls Walk (45 minutes)?

After all that you might just need a little tot of whisky from the Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (35 minutes), or perhaps just a leisurely walk along one of the beaches of the Gower Peninsula (45 minutes).

Must see

  • Aberdulais Falls (3.3 miles)
  • National Waterfront Museum (9.5 miles)
  • Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (11.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Aberdulais Falls (3.3 miles)
  • Aberdeunant (20.1 miles)
