  • Relaxed campsite opposite mountain bike trails in Afan Forest Park
  • Beach 25 minutes' drive away; 45 minutes to Gower Peninsula
  • Café/bar and food vans often open on weekends; barbecues permitted
Bryn Bettws Lodge is a family-run site deep inside the Afan Valley. With stunning views, this gorgeous spot is set at the top of a mountain inside the Afan Forest Park, surrounded by mature trees and green scenery. The ground isn't too step, but if you're looking for flat pitches, they're limited and can't be guaranteed. Accessible by lumpy and bumpy forestry roads, the site has a field with real toilets (and toilet roll) and a washing-up cabin with cold water only (boil some to get it hot) and fairy liquid and sponges. Want a shower? The shower block is 300 metres from the field and costs £2 per adult. Fires and barbecues are permitted as long as they're raised from the ground, or there's an under-cover barbecue area with hanging barbecues and tables in the field. Bryn Bettws Lodge does have a few catering options too. The main café and bar is open on weekends for breakfast (8.30am to 9.30am) and evening meals (3pm to 7.30pm); it sometimes opens during the week when there are enough guests, although during bad weather, it may be closed. There's a burger van open on weekends between 10am and 3pm, as well as an outdoor bar and pizza shack in the field open on weekends between 6pm and 9pm (again, this is weather dependent). Make your way to the hand-built wooden kids' park. The site is handily surrounded by mountain biking trails and tremendous walks. This is a fab spot for mountain bikers, hikers or anyone who wants to wake up to great views. There's a minimum noise policy after 10pm, but this applies to music only. If you expect to be in bed for 10pm in silence, then note that Bryn Bettws Lodge does not enforce a no-fun policy… expect people to be having campfires, barbecues and making the most of the experience with families and friends.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Nothing needs alot of updating very run down site,

Disliked All pitches on a slant, the site looks nothing like advertised on website. Very run down seem to care more about the bikers than campers. There's stuff just dumped everywhere. The place could be made abs beautiful with time and a little money spent on it. All facilities to far away from campers.

From the manager: Dear Rachel,
Cheers for the glowing review—sorry our pitches didn’t deliver the pancake-flat fantasy you were craving! We’re tucked into the rugged embrace of Afan Forest, practically sharing a pint with the bike park (name didn’t tip you off?), so a bit of a slope is just our charming little quirk. We don’t advertise flat pitches—pro tip: give those site descriptions a quick skim next time! We’re dishing out “woodland whimsy” rather than posh polish, and while our bikers get a cheeky nod, campers are still our darlings .The scattered bits? Call them our edgy take on forest feng shui, as you could see we are moving buildings to the camping field to keep our lovely campers happy 😁Toilets and wash areas are handily on the field, but the showers and restaurant? Grab your hiking boots for that scenic trek (all 200 metres ) down to these facilities —it’s a feature, not a flaw! We’ll keep dreaming of a magic money tree for a spruce-up while you hunt for a less tilty turf.

Excellent site with clean facilities.Very friendly staff.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked I highly recommend camping in Bryn Bettws Lodge. A beautiful place to relax and explore. Wonderful views, clean toilets and showers - probably cleaned regularly - for which we are very grateful to the person in question and thank you very much. Beautifully maintained playground for children - my son was delighted. You can see that the owner takes care of this place. Very nice lady from the restaurant-bar. I came with my sister and 11-year-old son for the first time to this place - unfortunately only for one night, but we will probably go back there.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Peace and quiet, lovely scenery. We had no electric hook up,for our Motorhome but so what? We managed ok without it for 1 night. The toilet facilities were unique, I loved the idea of weighting the toilets and wash room doors to close by using a weighted bottle, stopping the unlocked door flying over when windy. There was also a place for washing pots and for charging phones.

Local attractions

If you need a little bit of relaxing time to recover from all the activities at the forest park, how about a trip to the beach? It’ll take you about 25 minutes to drive to Aberavon beach or around 40 minutes to Ogmore-by-Sea, where you can also stop by at the castle. That said, there’s still scope for activity down at the coast: Ogmore has horse riding outings, while Rest Bay (half an hour’s drive) is well known for surfing and bodyboarding. Keen to keep the adventures coming? How about ziplining from a former colliery tower at Zip World Tower (35 minutes), tackling the trails of Bike Park Wales (45 minutes) or walking behind a curtain of water on the Four Waterfalls Walk (45 minutes)? After all that you might just need a little tot of whisky from the Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (35 minutes), or perhaps just a leisurely walk along one of the beaches of the Gower Peninsula (45 minutes).
