  • Relaxed campsite opposite mountain bike trails in Afan Forest Park
  • Beach 25 minutes' drive away; 45 minutes to Gower Peninsula
  • Undercover barbecue area in the field, plus a wooden playground
Bryn Bettws Lodge is a family-run site deep inside the Afan Valley. With stunning views, this gorgeous spot is set at the top of a mountain inside the Afan Forest Park, surrounded by mature trees and green scenery. The ground isn't too steep, but if you're looking for flat pitches, they're limited and can't be guaranteed. Accessible by lumpy and bumpy forestry roads, the site has a field with real toilets (and toilet roll) and a washing-up cabin with cold water only (boil some to get it hot) and washing-up liquid and sponges. Want a shower? The shower block is 300 metres from the field and costs just a small amount per adult. Fires and barbecues are permitted as long as they're raised from the ground or there's an undercover barbecue area with hanging barbecues and tables in the field. Families can make their way to the hand-built wooden kids' park, or for something more adventurous, head out onto the surrounding mountain biking trails and tremendous walks. This is a fab spot for mountain bikers, hikers or anyone who wants to wake up to great views. Bryn Bettws Lodge often has a few catering options too (a café and bar, a burger van and an outdoor pizza and pizza shack), all managed by outside companies and with varied opening hours on weekends. They're not always open, but there are plenty of pubs and restaurants within 10 minutes' drive of the site to visit. If you expect to be in bed for 10pm in silence, then note that Bryn Bettws Lodge does not enforce a no-fun policy… expect people to be having campfires, barbecues and making the most of the experience with families and friends. There's a minimum noise policy after 10pm, but this applies to music only. Here, all rubbish is to be taken home with you. There's also no internet (and hit-and-miss mobile phone signal) on site.

What customers say

This campsite boasts spectacular views and direct access to mountain biking trails. Visitors praise the friendly staff, cleanliness of facilities, and spacious pitches. While the site is described as relaxed and family-friendly, some note issues with pitch levels, limited amenities like hot water for washing up, and occasional noise from other campers. Improvements to the children's play area and ongoing development are noted.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked I thin it was a beautiful place to be. Sites were stunning.
Love the Idea of the burger bar and cafe makes cooking and food easier when camping to have that choice there!
Showers are fabulous shower rooms fit for me and my two children all to go in one shower room and definetly could fit more not even the room but in the shower it’s self, with your own toilet. Be mindful they are run off water from a natural spring. Facilities are clean. The place is well run and the owners are a credit to them self and helpful will certainty be going back for the friendly family vibe that’s very welcomed but also a quite a chilled environment at the same time for chilled couples or singles honestly the best of both worlds here can’t big it up enough !

Disliked Nothing possibly to add the odd essential in the cafe like milk or tooth brush? But that’s really digging for something as everything was perfect !

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked We stayed for one night on a grass pitch in our campervan. The site did not disappoint. Exactly what we wanted. A site not overrun with noise, activities and entertainment. The view is exceptional. Toilets etc are basic but clean. Lovely communal kitchen area where you can charge your phone's etc. outdoor BBQ area. Looks like a burger shack opens on the weekend which we missed. A lovely children play area which my son enjoyed. Awesome bike trails and skills park - another big reason for us staying. The skills park occupied my son which meant I was able to relax and soak up the view. The dogs approved too. We will be back. And thank you to the wonderful owners!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Amazing views, had a very relaxing peaceful stay and also had a great park for the kids and plenty of space for them to play, they loved the homemade milkshake too when we popped into the lodge before we packed up! We’ll definitely be back.

Disliked Nothing, it was exactly what we expected.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Great for mountain bikers. only stayed one night as a stop off. Toilets and wash facilities were great and very clean

Disliked No WiFi or phone signal
Location was up a very long path I decided to walk back to camp

From the manager: Thank you for the review, and we’re sorry that you were unable to get Wi-Fi or a strong phone signal during your stay. Unfortunately, being located right on top of a mountain means mobile signal can sometimes be limited, which is completely outside of our control.

We are slightly confused by the comment regarding having to walk up a very long path, as guests are able to park directly next to their tent or pitch, and the toilets and washing facilities are located on the camping field itself. The showers are also only around a 2-minute walk away.

We’re really pleased to hear that you found the toilets and washing facilities clean and that you enjoyed the location for mountain biking. Thank you for staying with us.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Very relaxed campsite. Good facilities, loos, shower block (needs a code to enter for £2) washing up. Lots of walks and bike paths that lead directly from the site. Excellent playground for the kids. The facilities were cleaned regularly

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Views, easy access to the forest.

Disliked Lack of clear communication when we arrived, no soap in the one sink for washing hands, which meant that people were washing their hands and brushing their teeth in the kitchen area, only 3 toilets, nowhere to get rid of dog poo, so it stank out our van taking it away, no hose on th chemical toilet point, which makes me wonder if people were using the drinking water tap to top up their toilet tanks.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We would just like to clarify a few points

We are a self check-in site, and all arrival and facility information is provided within the booking information as well as on signs throughout the campsite. Had this information been read on arrival, the locations of the additional facilities would have been clear.

The showers are located by the entrance to the main site, where there are also an additional 6 toilets, showers and hand-washing sinks available. Dog waste can be disposed of in the bins located at the main lodge.

Regarding water, we have never advertised facilities for filling motorhome water tanks or providing a hose at the chemical disposal point. Our site operates from a natural spring, and after several weeks with very little rainfall, protecting our water supply is currently a priority, unfortunately your toilet tank isn’t

We appreciate all feedback, but we would advise you to read the information provided with your booking and the signage around the site, as this explains where all of our facilities are located.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The view from the site is amazing and it's a very relaxed affair. Facilities were good - there is a cafe onsite and a burger shack. Messaging around the site re. water use was consistent and clear. Access was fine in our 6.5m long van, there were a range of setups using the site. Walking and cycling from the site was easy and very beautiful. The site is very sloping (hence the views) so if you are in a van, make sure you bring levelling blocks!

Local attractions

If you need a little bit of relaxing time to recover from all the activities at the forest park, how about a trip to the beach? It’ll take you about 25 minutes to drive to Aberavon beach or around 40 minutes to Ogmore-by-Sea, where you can also stop by at the castle. That said, there’s still scope for activity down at the coast: Ogmore has horse riding outings, while Rest Bay (half an hour’s drive) is well known for surfing and bodyboarding. Keen to keep the adventures coming? How about ziplining from a former colliery tower at Zip World Tower (35 minutes), tackling the trails of Bike Park Wales (45 minutes) or walking behind a curtain of water on the Four Waterfalls Walk (45 minutes)? After all that you might just need a little tot of whisky from the Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (35 minutes), or perhaps just a leisurely walk along one of the beaches of the Gower Peninsula (45 minutes).
