General

  • Family-run camping and caravan site with lots of nearby walks
  • Dog friendly
  • Newly-built amenities cabin with hot showers

Woodland Rise Camping and Caravanning is a place for west Wales walkies. It's a family-run farm in the Carmarthenshire countryside, with plenty of space for dogs to stretch their legs and with local woodland trails where they can investigate All The Smells. And it's close to bluebell woods, and less than half an hour from magnif coastal walks along the headlands of Carmarthenshire and Cardigan...

Woodland Rise is in a meadow location on the farm of Fferm Fach in the quiet village of Blaen-y-coed, a peacefully rural location with west Wales views by day and starry skies by night. It has a newly-built and cosy amenities cabin with well-maintained toilets, two additional separate toilets, hot showers and washing-up facilities; a chemical disposal point and gas sales. Wifi is available for an extra fee, but please note that the rural location imposes limits on the wifi speed.

The nearest place for supplies is Carmarthen about six miles away; nearby restaurants include the Blue Bell Inn Chinese restaurant (two miles) and the Nag's Head (ten miles). Barbecues are allowed on site.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Amazingly helpful and friendly - we got stuck on the M4 for hours and turned up at midnight - owner waited for us and helped us pitch in the dark and rain. Great showers, lovely and clean.

    Secluded area.
    Quiet.
    Cheap.
Extra facilities (fridge, freezer, toaster, microwave).

    Disliked:

    Lack of views.
Ground was very hard/stone-filled in places (or was where we pitched) - bring a few spares with you!
All tent pitches are on a bit of a slope.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review, we're glad you liked the location and facilities. We really enjoy the views from the site so we're sorry to hear that they didn't live up to your expectations! The slight slope on the grass pitches helps to prevent them from becoming waterlogged in the sometimes wet Welsh weather, but hopefully the pictures we have on our site listing help to illustrate the gradient and views that can be expected.

Nice quiet site plenty of room for kids to run about and play football. Nicely kept and showers, toilets and the washing up room all clean. Washing up room also has fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster for those without an electric connection.

    Disliked:

Nothing as we were first in showers/ toilets every morning- separate toilets are nearly ready ( plumbing was bwijg finished off as we left site) as I guess you could have been waiting a while for the toilet if you didn't time it right!

From the manager...

Thank-you for your kind review, having the freedom to roam around is great! We hope the new toilets will help with the wait first thing in the morning.

Lovely small site, very helpful owner, Trevor showed us to our pitch helping us pick a perfect spot to minimise the wind, and helped us put up our tent. The toilet/shower rooms were clean and warm and the little room with microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge and freezer is a fantastic idea. New toilets are being built ready for the summer campers. We had a lovely weekend away. Thank you.

    Disliked:

    Nothing to dislike.

From the manager...

Glad you enjoyed your stay. The extra facilities are nearly complete and will be finished by June 1st
We will attempt to arrange a little less wind for your next visit.

Local attractions

Feel free to wander around the Woodland Rise meadow grounds if you fancy a stroll very close to home; a short walk away from site is a bluebell wood recommended by the farm team for morning meanders.

The 600 acres of countryside, formal gardens and a nature reserve of the National Botanic Gardens of Wales are 15 miles or about half an hour's drive away and are a ripping option for a day out (although be aware that you won't be allowed in if you do have your dog on holiday with you).

The Dylan Thomas Boathouse, where the writer spent the last four years of his life, is about 15 miles away at Laugharne and has lyrically good views of the Taf Estuary and a tearoom noted as one of the top ten places in the UK for afternoon tea (soup, snacks, light lunches, homemade Welsh cakes and bara beith are also available).

The 11h-century castle of Kidwelly 17 miles away is a must-see for history buffs in the region, still surviving after Owain Glyndwr’s attempts to destroy it (naughty);. If you fancy more of the same, Kidwelly is one of 12 castles in Carmarthenshire.

A bit further afield at 24 miles but well worth the drive is the Colby Woodland Garden in Pembrokeshire, managed by the National Trust: come here to build dens, use the rope swings, amble along on a wildlife walk or join in the regular activities like campfire building.

About six miles from Woodland Rise Camping and Caravanning, the Gwili Steam Railway company runs a preserved service from Bronwydd along a section of the old Carmarthen-Aberstwyth line.

Must see

  • National Wool Museum (7.3 miles)
  • National Botanic Garden of Wales (12.1 miles)
  • Aberglasney Gardens (14.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Aberdeunant (17.4 miles)
  • Dolaucothi Gold Mines (21.0 miles)
