  • Family-run touring park set in open Anglesey countryside
  • Just off the A55; Caernarfon and Beaumaris 20 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-friendly site with views of Snowdonia National Park
Stuck deciding between the mountains, the coast and the countryside? All three are easily accessed from Ael y Garnedd, a family-run touring park in Star, Anglesey. How so? Well, this site has a splendid selection of well-maintained, level pitches in pleasant grounds just off the A55, easily accessible from the Britannia Bridge and close to the Anglesey coastline. The pitches have the added bonus of spectacular views over the mountains of Snowdonia National Park (which is from 20 minutes’ drive away, by the way). Whether it's mountaineering in Snowdonia, rib rides and exploring the castle in Beaumaris (20 minutes), or lunch in Caernarfon (20 minutes), the site's central location is bound to come very much in handy. That’s what makes this place such a great base for family and dog-friendly holidays spent both on the island and mainland. Sandy beaches are close by too, and you'll be less than 30 minutes from the offerings at Benllech, Aberffraw, Rhosneigr and Ynys Llanddwyn, a haven for ramblers, rockpoolers and cyclists. With amenities like grey-waste disposal, toilets and showers all provided, as well as a laundry room, life on site is comfortable, and if you do need to venture out it won't take you long to find what you're looking for. The nearest pub is five minutes' drive, while Menai Bridge (10 minutes) has a large supermarket and an array of shops and restaurants.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Unfortunately there isn’t much I liked about the place I would say the kids area is spacious with a little football nets and small Play area which was lovely but they was watched like a hawk and complained about if they was enjoying them selfs too much

Disliked Where do I start .
The tent pitches that we was given are on a slope which made it difficult to pitch up and everything in the tent was leaning to one side , the noise from the motor way is unbearable at times not what you want for a nice peaceful trip, I would completely avoid this camp at all cost especially if your a family with small children. We felt like we was on pins the whole time, the owner is a very very rude he made you feel very uncomfortable to the point we cut our trip short , the way he thinks it’s necessary to speak to people the way he does is completely unacceptable, he watches every move you make so he can complain at any given chance he gets, following my son in the bathroom and making a big deal of moping behind him unfortunately it was heavy rain he can’t help having muddy feet when walking on grass to the toilets, following us to the bins and stood staring while we are recycling, we are not 5 years old and are fully aware on how to recycle, my children were playing on the play area for him to come over complaining to keep the noise down it is around 5pm in the evening and they are kids being kids get a grip. The next day he also came over asking my autistic child how old she was and she shouldn’t be playing in the area she is tall 11 year old and has just as much right as any other child to be there and it made us very sad trying to explain the situation to her , but like I said we was on pins the whole time we are a very quite respectful chilled family and it was just the worse experience we’ve had and has put us off, we camp a lot and been to some amazing camps but wanted to try somewhere new , but definitely will not be putting my kids through that experience again , bit of advise if your reading this loose your attitude and have some respect for people, treat people how you want to be treated

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. At Ael Y Garnedd we do our best to ensure that all of our patrons enjoy their stay, and we endeavour to help all of our customers so that they have the best experience possible. Clearly, we are disappointed to read your review and that you were not satisfied on this occasion.

However, we would like to address some of the points you have raised in your review, which we believe are inaccurate and misleading:
- 'The tent pitches that we was given are on a slope which made it difficult to pitch up and everything in the tent was leaning to one side' - some of the grass pitches are on a SLIGHT gradient, but all are suitable for a standard family tent and would not have caused anything to "lean" or make pitching up "difficult". Pictures of the pitches were available on the internet for you to view, make an informed decision on suitability, and follow up with an enquiry prior to your stay.

- 'the noise from the motor way is unbearable' - The dual carriageway is approximately 300 yards from the site and sunken about 60 feet below the level of the campsite. Trees and bushes have been planted to reduce the noise levels via environmental means. Although noise from the road is inevitible at busy periods (which is quite rare), it is general road noise and not extreme - this is supported by our customer reviews, but we appreciate that these opinions are subjective and may vary from person to person due to their sensitivity to noise. Some traffic noise is only to be expected due to the camp's convenient location a short distance from the A55 and A5 roads.

The comments about the owner are also misleading and potentially defamatory:
- 'following my son in the bathroom and making a big deal of moping behind him' - your son was not 'followed;' to the bathroom at all. He entered the bathroom whilst the building was being cleaned (which is a regular occurence to maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness for ALL our guests). Your son was asked to use the mop by the door as a courtesy to other users after leaving muddy footprints all over the floor. Your son ignored this request.

- 'following us to the bins and stood staring while we are recycling' - Again, you were not 'followed' to the bins. However, we accept that you were asked NOT to leave your broken tent behind with the recycling. Despite being advised not to erect your canopy due to the inclement weather, you did so anyway and the tent was damaged. As a small family run business we ask customers not to dispose of broken tents and other large items in the refuse area because we get penalised by the local Council. There are signs by the refuse/recycling area to this effect, but you chose to ignore these signs and tried to dispose of your tent illicitly. Any 'rudeness' that you may have experienced was in response to these general rules not being respected by members of your party.

- 'him to come over complaining to keep the noise down it is around 5pm in the evening and they are kids being kids get a grip' - this was in response to a complaint by another customer that your children were making excessive noise and using foul language.

- 'The next day he also came over asking my autistic child how old she was and she shouldn’t be playing in the area she is tall 11 year old and has just as much right as any other child to be there' - The play area is there for all to use in a safe manner. So that young children can play safely, we advise that the swings and slide should be used appropriately by children no older than 11. Older children are welcome to use the play area if they do so safely, respect other users, and treat the equipment respectfully. Your child had climbed on top of a plastic chute (the top of the slide) which is 8 feet off the ground and not designed to be sat on. It also means that your child would have accessed the slide by climbing over the fence that is there for safety purposes on the 'tower' part of the apparatus. When your child was spoken to about this, they stated that they were 15 years old, not 11 as you state in your review (our booking shows that you did not have an 11 year old in your party). Had your child fallen from the chute, we would not have been liable for any injury caused due to her behaviour. Retrospectively explaining that your child is autistic does not change the safety recommendations and our expectations of how the play area should be used.

We strive to 'treat people how we want to be treated', which is why we have high standards at our site. We want guests to be relaxed, have fun, be safe, feel valued, and create memories exploring Anglesey and North Wales. As noted earlier, we are sorry to hear that your experience at Ael Y Garnedd was not a positive one in this instance. Thankfully, your experience seems to be an anomaly in the broader spectrum of our customers' experience. Your feedback has been noted.

Prior communication A+++; although no staff seen, excellent overall.

Liked Communication before arrival was excellent, easy access to site, efficient showers in block, good night’s sleep, short drive to amenities and attractions, clean facilities the morning after we arrived, all aspects maintained and working, easy departure.

Disliked - Shower block was not so clean at night.
- Queueing for the shower in the morning inside the block not pleasant experience.
- Mixer taps on sinks would be more convenient over sinks (and save water).

Electric grass pitch

Liked Stayed here in our motor home with the wife and 2 kids. A quiet, clean, well respected site. Pitches were trimmed and mostly level. Park for the kids, football posts up on a flat field. All enclosed. Facilities clean and stocked. The views if you pitch right are incredible! We would definitely come here again.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The views from the campsite were amazing, showers and toilets were really clean and there was plenty of room to get changed. Sink area also clean. Facilities were great and the owner was really friendly when we chatted one morning. Location is also superb as it was easy to get to anywhere on Anglesey from the campsite, right next to A5 and A55.

Nearby was:

Pili Palas
Plas Newydd (National Trust)
Sŵ Môr Môn (Anglesey Sea Zoo)
Newborough nature reserve & beach
LlanfairPG (massive Co-op here that had everything you might need!)

Short drive to Red Wharf Bay, Point Lynas, Traeth Lligwy and Benllech to the East, or Rhosneigr and Trearddur Bay to the West.

Disliked Only very minor downsides were:

a) the road noise and trains sounding horns in the night - you can easily remedy this with earplugs though. I was used to it by the second night and slept like a log!
b) lots of stones in the ground so it took a lot of effort to put the tent pegs in - you can get around this by using the more robust hardstanding pegs though.

We couldn’t get on the wi-fi but I don’t class that as a negative as I like to unplug when we go camping!

Local attractions

When you want to stay pretty local, make Menai Suspension Bridge (five minutes' drive) your first stop. The huge suspension bridge between Anglesey and mainland Wales is a sight to behold. Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens (10 minutes) is rather interesting too, as a historic estate with peaceful gardens and tea rooms. Beaumaris (20 minutes) next? This stop is by the seaside, hence the gorgeous promenade, and the castle is also worth a visit. Caernarfon Castle (20 minutes) has a big ‘wow’ factor too – the huge palace-style fortress sits along the river Seiont and looks very grand. In Conwy (30 minutes), there’s another castle, as well as the harbour where boat tours take off across the coast. For those of you interested in getting to know legends and history around St David, visit the island of Ynys Llanddwyn (30 minutes). The scenery is just as great at Great Orme (45 minutes), a chunk of limestone land that juts out into the sea and has been named the ‘sea monster’ by the Vikings. Time for some adrenaline instead? Zip World Fforest (40 minutes) has a forest rollercoaster and zipwires or swings over the treetops.
