Garthyfog: The site

General

  • Dog-friendly South Snowdonia site two miles from the Mawddach estuary
  • Walks from the site; 20 minutes’ drive to Coed y Brenin Forest Park
  • Free-range eggs available; walking distance to Fairbourne for shops

Got a thing for mountains, waterfalls and mountain biking trails? Or perhaps a cycle-easy trail along an estuary, followed by paddleboarding around Barmouth harbour? Such is the story at Garthyfog, a dog-friendly site in South Snowdonia, two miles from the Mawddach estuary.

With Barmouth’s beach, harbour and promenade an hour’s walk or 20 minutes’ cycle away, you’ll have all the pleasures of coastal camping to mix and match with the mountain biking mecca at Coed y Brenin Forest Park (20 minutes’ drive) or hilly hikes up Penygader (25 minutes).

Pitches here are sheltered and tucked away on a hill, so they’re not all level. With this hillside position, views are rather handsome and make for a pretty backdrop to any barbecue – you might find that the site’s free-range eggs steal the show, though, if you get your hands on those.

Whether it’s walking, climbing or mountain biking you’ve got in mind, you’ll always have the site to prop your feet up at afterwards. Having operated for many years (with guests often returning), you’ll have a well-kept toilet block, two showers, two toilets and a dishwashing area at your disposal.

As for the seaside… well, when you’re not ambling down to Barmouth over the Mawddach estuary via the grand Barmouth Bridge, the seaside village of Fairbourne is just 45 minutes’ stroll – that's a yes to the beach, as well as restaurants, pubs, shops and fish and chip shops.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

A charge of £1.00 applies for the use of the shower.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Really beautiful site. We were the only ones staying in the main field so had our pick of where to pitch up. For the most part the weather held up so after dinner we had a beer, watched the bats fly round and heard the owls wake up. Loo block is nice and clean and there are little touches that a lot of sites forget - like somewhere to put your wash bag that isn't the floor! Prefer not to pay for showers but I understand that some sites have to, either way the water was hot and pressure was great. Had a call with the owner when we arrived who recommended some nice walks, though we didn't have time to explore much. Definitely would visit again.

Lovely quiet and friendly site with good choice of pitches available. Great location with plenty of walks from the site. Beth the owner was very helpful in explaining many walking ideas and sights to see. Highly recommend the waterfall walk and walk to Barmouth via ferry as the bridge was closed. Took the short drive up to the lakes with a wide range of walks from there. The scenery was stunning there.
Toilet and shower facilities were good with plenty of hot water. We loved our stay here.

    Lovely quiet campsite.
Ground was spotless. Toilets and wan areas very clean.
    Host was lovely.

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike, bus was on a bit of a slope..so being able to have bottles etc stand up, you'd need a little table, or use the camp's picnic tables.

The site is beautiful, quiet and peaceful. Toilets and shower area always clean, and the hot showers perfect after adventure. It's in an amazing spot for beaches, mountains, lakes and general adventure. Also Beth was absolutely lovely and told me some places to walk which were fantastic. I had a surprise visit from Betty the dog too which was fun. Thank you so much for making my first solo female camping trip so good.

Local attractions

Whether you’re a newbie to the whole walking thing or a seasoned trail veteran, there are walks for all levels locally… and some straight from the site. Perhaps you’ll want to set your sights on Arthog Waterfalls (half an hour’s walk) or go straight for the big gun, Penygader’s mountain trails (under three hours’ walk or 25 minutes’ drive).

Those of you who prefer to pedal your way about may want to make headway for the The Mawddach Trail (around half an hour’s walk). This nine-mile traffic-free highway runs down a disused railway line from beachy Barmouth to Dolgellau, where you might want to extend your route along the Precipice Walk (15 minutes’ drive) through meadows, woodlands and a conifer plantation.

Your blood may already be pumping from all the activities, but those of you who are after adrenaline practically on tap will want to head on up to Zip World Slate Caverns (50 minutes), where zipwires and trampolines will take things to new heights – not literally, though, as they’re part of an underground cave system.

Must see

  • Rheilffordd Talyllyn Railway (9.0 miles)
  • MOMA Wales - Y Tabernacl (10.5 miles)
  • CADW - Harlech Castle (11.2 miles)

  • Ty^ Mawr Wybrnant (25.1 miles)
