Got a thing for mountains, waterfalls and mountain biking trails? Or perhaps a cycle-easy trail along an estuary, followed by paddleboarding around Barmouth harbour? Such is the story at Garthyfog, a dog-friendly site in south Snowdonia, one mile from the Mawddach estuary. With Barmouth’s beach, harbour and promenade an hour’s walk or 20 minutes’ cycle away, you’ll have all the pleasures of coastal camping to mix and match with the mountain biking mecca at Coed y Brenin Forest Park (20 minutes’ drive) or hilly hikes up Penygader (25 minutes). Pitches here are sheltered and tucked away on a hill, so they’re not all level. With this hillside position, views are rather handsome and make for a pretty backdrop to any barbecue. Whether it’s walking, climbing or mountain biking you’ve got in mind, you’ll always have the site to prop your feet up at afterwards. Having operated for many years (with guests often returning), you’ll have a well-kept toilet block, two showers, two toilets and a dishwashing area at your disposal. As for the seaside… well, when you’re not ambling down to Barmouth over the Mawddach estuary via the grand Barmouth Bridge, the seaside village of Fairbourne is just 45 minutes’ stroll – that's a yes to the beach, as well as restaurants, pubs, shops and fish and chip shops.

喜欢 Tranquility, scenery, info from site owner, good clean facilities with everything you need. We didn’t experience any midges though had been warned there might be some on arrival. Site does slope and we don’t have levelling ramps but we still easily found a great pitch for our campervan. Lovely walks from site.

喜欢 Plenty of space available in the main field, expected it to be far busier given it was the May Bank Holiday weekend.
Greeted on arrival by lovely owner, who gave us the choice and pointed out facilities. These are basic but adequate.

不喜欢 The field is on quite a steep hillside, and up a narrow pot holey lane, so chances are you could end up with an uncomfortable night in a tent. Also only 2 toilets and showers and not designated men/women. Plus midges which can make camping he'll, so midge nets highly recommended here.
I had 2 horrendous nights . I found a nice level patch at the top near the shower block, but a later arrival also chose to camp up close by and snored really loudly, both nights.

喜欢 The pitch was quiet the night we stayed with us being the only ones grass pitching. On arrival the owners were very friendly and welcoming. The shower blocks and toilets were clean and there was adequate facilities for washing up. This was our first time camping in our newly done up van and I can definitely say it won’t be the last.

喜欢 Wonderful location near the sea. Very quiet with gorgeous views. The owner was so friendly and welcoming and a joy to chat to. Toilets and showers very clean. Fire pits and picnic tables scattered across the field.

喜欢 Beautiful location with nice valley views. It was also nice and quiet. The toilets were well laid out and clean.

不喜欢 The pitch area has little protection from strong winds - there were 35 mph gusts and I moved my tent over by the trees since there was room, but the wind was mainly coming upslope and there wasn't any protection from there unless you happened to be at the one pitch at the bottom, and the trees also were dropping acorns. For the most part that's just how camping is sometimes though, can't count on conditions.
As described and mentioned by other users, it's on a slope, but I didn't think the slope was too bad at most spots. I did wish the showers were either included or allowed for card payment rather than coin (though to be fair the description does say it costs £1).

Whether you’re a newbie to the whole walking thing or a seasoned trail veteran, there are walks for all levels locally… and some straight from the site. Perhaps you’ll want to set your sights on Arthog Waterfalls (half an hour’s walk) or go straight for the big gun, Penygader’s mountain trails (under three hours’ walk or 25 minutes’ drive). Those of you who prefer to pedal your way about may want to make headway for the The Mawddach Trail (around half an hour’s walk). This nine-mile traffic-free highway runs down a disused railway line from beachy Barmouth to Dolgellau, where you might want to extend your route along the Precipice Walk (15 minutes’ drive) through meadows, woodlands and a conifer plantation. Your blood may already be pumping from all the activities, but those of you who are after adrenaline practically on tap will want to head on up to Zip World Slate Caverns (50 minutes), where zipwires and trampolines will take things to new heights – not literally, though, as they’re part of an underground cave system.
